The Best Places to See Fall Foliage, Month by Month

Leaf colour moves. It starts in the north and in the mountains in late September, then works its way south and downhill until it reaches the city parks of southern Europe and Japan in November. So the best place to go depends mostly on when you can travel.

MonthBest for fall foliageBest for a quieter city break
SeptemberAspen, Vermont (late in the month), Quebec City (last week)Bavaria for Oktoberfest, Barcelona for La Mercè, the Cotswolds
OctoberVermont, Montreal, Seoul, Lake Bled, Ljubljana, Glen Coe, Edinburgh, PragueParis, Amsterdam, Westonbirt in the Cotswolds, Tuscany for the grape harvest
NovemberKyoto, Peneda-Gerês, Budapest, BrugesTuscany for the truffle market, Paris, Barcelona

If you are asking for the best cities to see fall foliage, the ones where the colour is right in town are Kyoto, Seoul, Montreal, Ljubljana and Prague: temples, palaces, a mountain park or a riverbank you can walk to from your hotel.

The 20 Best Fall Destinations, One by One

1. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto in autumn is famous for a reason. Maples and ginkgos turn the temple gardens red, orange and gold, and the colour peaks in the second half of November, often lingering into early December. That fortnight is as busy as cherry blossom season, and rooms across the city book out months ahead, so reserve as soon as your dates are fixed.

Start at Kiyomizu-dera for the view over the city through the leaves, then cross to Tofuku-ji, whose wooden bridge over a valley of maples is the single most photographed autumn view in town. Arashiyama pairs its bamboo grove with a riverside full of colour. For a bed, The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto is the splurge, Hotel Kanra Kyoto the mid-range pick and K's House Kyoto the budget one. Ganko Sanjo Honten, a big old kaiseki and sushi house by the Kamo River, is a reliable dinner. Our Kyoto guide has the neighbourhoods and the rest of the year.

2. Vermont, USA

Vermont is the classic New England autumn: scenic byways, small towns with white churches, and hillsides of red and orange maple. Peak colour runs from late September in the north and the mountains to mid October further south.

Drive the Route 100 Scenic Byway, 146 miles of it, base yourself in Stowe, and stop at farms along the way for apple picking and pumpkin patches. The Stowe Foliage Arts Festival is one weekend of local crafts and food, 9 to 11 October in 2026. Twin Farms is the luxury stay, The Green Mountain Inn in Stowe the mid-range one and the Stowe Motel and Snowdrift the budget choice. For dinner, Hen of the Wood in Waterbury cooks with whatever the local farms are harvesting that week.

3. Bavaria, Germany

Bavaria in autumn is two trips in one: Oktoberfest in Munich, and Alpine valleys turning gold. Oktoberfest runs for sixteen days from mid September into the first weekend of October, and it changes the price and availability of every bed in the city while it is on, so book early or plan around it.

In Munich, the Augustiner-Keller beer garden is one of the city's oldest and serves hearty Bavarian food with the beer. Outside the city, Neuschwanstein looks its best against autumn forest, and it joined the UNESCO World Heritage list with Ludwig II's other palaces in 2025; tickets are €21 and only sold ahead, with a €2.50 booking fee. In Berchtesgaden National Park the boat down the Königssee to St Bartholomä is €23.40 return, and the valleys around it hold the autumn cattle drives, whose dates are fixed only days ahead. Schloss Elmau is the spa splurge, Hotel Müller in Hohenschwangau puts you at the foot of the castle, and Jaeger's in Munich keeps costs down.

4. Tuscany, Italy

Autumn is harvest season in Italy's most famous countryside. The grape harvest runs through September and early October, the olive harvest follows in October and November, and the white truffle season opens in the woods around San Miniato.

Drive the golden hills of the Val d'Orcia, taste wine in Chianti, and go to San Miniato for the white truffle, whose market takes the last three weekends of November. Montalcino holds the Sagra del Tordo, with medieval parades and archery contests between its quarters, on the last weekend of October. Castello di Casole, A Belmond Hotel is the luxury stay and runs to the end of November before it closes for winter, Hotel Athena in Siena is the mid-range one, and an agriturismo is the way to do it cheaply, with dozens around Buonconvento and the Val d'Orcia. Osteria Le Logge in Siena does creative Tuscan cooking with a long wine list.

5. Paris, France

By late October Paris is quieter, and its parks turn gold. The Jardin du Luxembourg and the Jardin des Tuileries are at their best, and the trees along the Seine follow.

In early October, the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre celebrates the hill's own small vineyard with parades, tastings and music. Autumn is also a good time for the Louvre, with shorter queues than in summer. Le Meurice is the classic splurge, Hotel La Tamise near the Tuileries the mid-range pick and Generator Paris the budget one. Café de Flore in Saint-Germain is the place for a slow coffee and a croissant. More in our Paris guide.

6. Seoul, South Korea

Autumn is the season every guide to Seoul picks first. The humidity has gone, the skies are clear, and the palaces and mountains turn gold and crimson, peaking from late October into early November.

Walk the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace, climb Namsan for the view back over the city, and hike Bukhansan National Park on the city's northern edge. Chuseok, the harvest holiday, falls in September or early October; it is a lovely time to see families in hanbok, but many shops and restaurants close for it, so check the date before you book. Four Seasons Hotel Seoul is the luxury stay, Lotte City Hotel Myeongdong the mid-range one and Kimchee Sinchon Guesthouse the budget choice. Tosokchon, near the palace, is famous for its ginseng chicken soup. Our Seoul guide has the rest.

7. Quebec City, Canada

Quebec City feels European, with cobbled streets inside its old walls, and Quebec's own foliage forecast puts the colour around the city at its mid-point in the last week of September and its peak in the first week of October. It is harvest season too, so the markets fill with apples, squash and maple everything.

Walk Old Quebec, take a cruise on the St Lawrence to see the colour along the banks, which run from May into December so autumn sailings are no problem, and give an afternoon to Montmorency Falls, 83 m high and a quarter of an hour from the old town, where the cliffs either side turn red. The Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is the landmark stay, Hôtel Le Germain Québec the mid-range pick and Auberge de la Paix the budget one. Aux Anciens Canadiens serves classic French Canadian dishes like tourtière and maple desserts.

8. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam from late September to mid November is the value season: the same canals and museums, fewer people and lower room rates than in summer. The trees along the canals turn yellow and orange, and the city's parks are at their best.

Cycle through the Vondelpark, then give the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum a proper afternoon each. From late November the Amsterdam Light Festival lights up the canals with installations you can see by boat or on foot. The Waldorf Astoria is the splurge, The Hoxton the mid-range pick and ClinkNOORD across the IJ the budget one. De Kas, a restaurant inside a greenhouse, cooks with vegetables grown on site. Our Amsterdam guide covers the neighbourhoods.

9. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh in autumn is all mist over the Old Town and colour on the slopes of Arthur's Seat. October is a good month for events: the Scottish International Storytelling Festival runs through the second half of the month, and the Samhuinn Fire Festival marks Celtic new year on 31 October.

Climb Arthur's Seat for the view over the city, walk up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle, and spend a quiet hour in the Royal Botanic Garden, where the trees turn early. The Balmoral is the landmark hotel, Apex Grassmarket the mid-range pick with castle views, and Kick Ass Grassmarket, now adults only, the budget one. The Scran and Scallie in Stockbridge does modern Scottish comfort food.

10. The Cotswolds, England

The Cotswolds are English countryside at its gentlest: honey stone villages and rolling hills that turn gold and amber through October.

Visit Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe, then walk a stretch of the Cotswold Way, the 164 km waymarked trail along the escarpment from Chipping Campden to Bath. Westonbirt Arboretum is the one place to plan around: its autumn season runs 25 September to 15 November, its maples usually turn in the middle or second half of October, and it is worth booking ahead. Cheltenham's literature festival fills 9 to 18 October if the weather turns. THE PIG in the Cotswolds, the old Barnsley House with its Rosemary Verey gardens, is the luxury stay, The Swan at Bibury the mid-range one on the river, and YHA's Barrel Store in Cirencester the budget choice, private rooms rather than dorms. The Wild Rabbit in Kingham cooks with produce from the Daylesford estate.

11. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is at its prettiest from mid October into November, when the day trippers thin out and the canals reflect the turning trees. It is a small city, so autumn's shorter days are no problem: everything is a short walk apart.

Take a boat along the canals, climb the 366 steps of the Belfry for the view over the rooftops, and browse the market stalls on the Markt. Hotel Dukes' Palace is the splurge, Hotel de Orangerie on a canal the mid-range pick and Snuffel Hostel the budget one. De Stove is a small, cosy restaurant cooking Belgian dishes with local ingredients. Our Bruges guide has more.

12. Montreal, Canada

Montreal turns red, yellow and orange in early to mid October, and the best place to see it is right in the middle of the city, on Mount Royal. The contrast of the colour against the old stone of the historic quarter is the view to come for.

Walk up Mount Royal Park to the lookout over downtown, then wander Old Montreal and the Plateau for cafés and murals. The city's big festivals, jazz included, are a summer thing, so autumn is a calmer time to visit. Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth is the landmark stay, Hotel Nelligan in Old Montreal the mid-range pick and Saintlo Montreal on rue Mackay the budget one. Schwartz's Deli has been serving Montreal smoked meat sandwiches since 1928.

13. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague in autumn has crisp air, fewer tourists than in summer, and parks and riverside paths in warm colour from late September into November.

Walk up through Petřín Park for the view over the city's towers, cross the Charles Bridge at sunrise before the crowds, and visit Prague Castle with the gardens below it turning gold. Four Seasons Hotel Prague is the splurge, Hotel Pod Věží by the Charles Bridge the mid-range pick and Hostel Downtown the budget one. Lokál serves Czech comfort food like roast pork and dumplings with tank Pilsner.

14. Aspen, Colorado, USA

Aspen is one of the best fall destinations in the USA, famous for the golden aspen trees that light up whole mountainsides. The window is early: Colorado's own tourism board puts the colour in September and October, and it goes first at altitude.

Drive over Independence Pass while it is open: it shuts for winter around the end of October, though in 2025 it stayed open to 17 November. Hike around the Maroon Bells, which Colorado's tourism board calls the most photographed peaks in North America, and plan that one around the access rules: cars are kept out between 08:00 and 17:00 through the season, so it is the shuttle at €14 ($16) or a €9 ($10) parking reservation booked ahead. Aspen Filmfest runs 29 September to 4 October in 2026, its 47th edition. The Little Nell is the luxury stay, Limelight Hotel the mid-range one and St Moritz Lodge the cheapest bed in a town with no cheap beds. Matsuhisa, Nobu Matsuhisa's Aspen restaurant, is the special occasion dinner.

15. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest in autumn is mild, with golden trees along the Danube by late October. It is also the season when the city's thermal baths feel their best: warm water, cool air.

Soak at the Széchenyi Baths, walk up to Buda Castle for the view over the river, and spend an afternoon on Margaret Island, a car free park in the middle of the Danube. Four Seasons Gresham Palace is the splurge, Continental Hotel Budapest the mid-range pick and Maverick Budapest Soho the budget one. The New York Café is famous for its gilded interior; go for coffee and cake rather than a full meal.

16. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is a small, green capital, and October is its best autumn month, when Tivoli Park and the trees along the Ljubljanica River turn orange. Mornings can be foggy because the city sits in a basin ringed by mountains, so climb to the castle: it is often clear above the fog when the streets below are grey.

Walk the river, spend an afternoon in Tivoli Park, and take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle. Odprta Kuhna (Open Kitchen), the Friday street food market on Pogacar Square, runs every Friday until the end of October, so any October visit catches it. InterContinental Ljubljana is the luxury stay, Hotel Cubo the mid-range pick and Hostel Tresor the budget one.

17. Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is an hour from Ljubljana, and October is when it looks the way it does on postcards: the church on its island, the castle on its cliff, and autumn colour all around the water.

Take a pletna, the traditional wooden rowing boat, out to the island, walk up to Bled Castle for the view, and walk the path around the lake, about 6 km. Order a slice of kremšnita, Bled's cream cake, somewhere on the shore. Vila Bled is the splurge, Hotel Park on the lakefront the mid-range pick and Bled Hostel the budget one. The Bled Castle restaurant has the best dining view in town.

18. Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal

Peneda-Gerês has been Portugal's only national park since 1971, in the far north on the border with Spain, and it has one of southern Europe's latest autumns. The oak woods turn from late October into November, later than almost anywhere else on this list, and the waterfalls fill up again once the rain returns in October.

Walk the Mata da Albergaria, the park's great oak wood, which the Roman road to Braga still crosses with its milestones in place, and which is the best of the autumn colour. Add the Arado waterfalls and the stone village of Soajo, where two dozen granite granaries stand on stilts on one threshing floor, with more than sixty more beside the castle at Lindoso. Small wild Garrano horses graze the high ground and are seen often; the park's wolves almost never are. Pousada Caniçada, above the dam on the Cávado, is the comfortable stay, Hotel São Bento da Porta Aberta at Rio Caldo the spa alternative, and Parque Cerdeira at Campo do Gerês the budget one, the campsite that stays open all year while the one at Gerês village shuts on 15 October.

19. Barcelona, Spain

Autumn in Barcelona means cooler days and fewer tourists, which makes it a good time for the city's architecture and markets. Two things to know: La Mercè, the city's biggest festival, takes over the streets for several days around 24 September with human towers, fire runs and free concerts, and October is Barcelona's wettest month, so pack for the odd downpour.

See Park Güell and the Sagrada Família with shorter queues than in summer, and wander the Gothic Quarter rather than La Rambla. Hotel Arts is the splurge, H10 Montcada Boutique Hotel in El Born the mid-range pick, and Sant Jordi Hostels Gràcia the budget one. Cervecería Catalana is a popular tapas bar. Our Barcelona guide has the neighbourhoods.

20. Glen Coe, Scotland

Glen Coe is one of Scotland's most dramatic valleys, and from late September through October the bracken and birches turn gold and rust under the mountains.

Hike to the Lost Valley or around Buachaille Etive Mòr, stop at the Glencoe Visitor Centre for the valley's history, and drive the A82 through the glen, one of the great roads in the country. It is also familiar from the cinema: Skyfall took its closing drive down Glen Etive next door, and Hagrid's hut was built for Prisoner of Azkaban by Clachaig Gully, though nothing of it is left. Glencoe House is the luxury stay, the Clachaig Inn the historic mid-range pub with rooms, and the Red Squirrel Campsite the budget choice, wooded and with fire pits but no hook-ups. The Laroch in Ballachulish is the dinner booking to make, and you do have to book.

How to Time a Fall Foliage Trip

Leaf colour is a narrow window. In any one place the peak lasts two to three weeks, and it moves by a week or more from year to year depending on the weather in the weeks before. A warm, dry September can delay it; an early frost can bring it forward and then strip the trees.

Three things help:

  • Book somewhere with a spread of altitude. Valleys, lower slopes and mountain tops turn at different times, so a place like Aspen, Vermont or Bavaria gives you colour somewhere even if you miss the exact peak
  • Check a local foliage report in the fortnight before you go, and keep anything non-refundable to the last week
  • Choose cities for late trips. Urban parks turn later than the countryside, which is why Kyoto, Paris and Budapest still have colour in November

Foliage and warm weather rarely share a destination in autumn. If you would rather have sun and a swim than colour, see our guide to warm fall destinations in Europe instead.

Fall Foliage in the USA and Canada

North America has the most dependable autumn colour on this list, because the hardwood forests of the northeast turn almost all at once.

  • Late September: Aspen and the Colorado Rockies, and the northern mountains of Vermont
  • Early to mid October: the rest of Vermont, Quebec City and Montreal. This is the answer if you are looking for the best places to visit in October in the USA
  • Late October: further south in New England, as the colour works its way down

A Vermont and Quebec road trip is the classic combination: Stowe to Montreal is about three hours with the border crossing, and Montreal to Quebec City about three more, or two and three quarter hours by train. For more ideas, see our United States guide.
