New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, which quietly makes it one of the easiest to travel for in years: New Year's Day is a Friday, so the long weekend runs through to Sunday 3 January 2027. Below you'll find what midnight actually looks like in each of the ten places, what the weather does, and how far ahead you need to book.

The 10 New Year's Eve destinations, one by one

1. New York City, USA

The Times Square ball drop is the New Year's Eve most people picture. The catch is how you watch it: the viewing pens fill from the early afternoon, and once you are in there is no leaving for food or a toilet until after midnight.

Most visitors are happier on a rooftop or at a party within sight of the square, or along the East River for the view of the skyline. December is the city's most expensive month, with Christmas and New Year both pushing up room rates, while January to March is the cheapest the city gets. Our New York City guide has the neighbourhoods and the rest of the winter.

2. Sydney, Australia

Sydney is one of the first big cities to see the new year, and it does it twice. There's a family fireworks show at about 9 pm and the main one at midnight, both over the harbour with the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge in the frame. Around a million people come to watch.

Here's how to do it: book a room or a ticketed vantage point two to three months out, or join the free viewing spots, where the queues start at dawn on 31 December. A harbour cruise gets you the best view of all. It's also high summer, around 25°C, so the next day is a beach day. Our Australia in December guide covers what the holidays do to prices, and Sydney has the rest.

3. Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik's New Year's Eve has no organiser at all. Everyone buys fireworks and sets them off at once, so at midnight the whole city goes up together. Neighbourhood bonfires earlier in the evening start the night, and the hill around Hallgrímskirkja is where half the city ends up at midnight.

Expect around 3°C and about four hours of daylight, which leaves plenty of dark for the Northern Lights on a clear night (your odds are better outside the city lights). Spend the afternoon in a geothermal pool. More on the city in our Reykjavik guide.

4. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Réveillon on Copacabana Beach is one of the biggest New Year's parties on the planet. Millions of people dress in white, the stages play music all night, and the fireworks go off right over the sand. Stay for the local tradition: jump seven waves after midnight for luck.

It's summer, hot and humid, and it's also Rio's busiest stretch: about four in ten Stippl trips to Rio start between December and March. Prices peak with it, so book early and stay somewhere you can walk to the beach from, because the roads around Copacabana close on the night. Plan the rest with our Rio de Janeiro guide.

5. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo's New Year is a quiet, family one, and that is exactly what makes it special. At midnight temples across the city ring their bells 108 times in the Joya no Kane ceremony, and the first shrine visit of the year follows. Meiji Jingu draws the biggest crowds in the country over the first days of January, and Senso-ji in Asakusa is the other classic.

Two things to know. Many attractions and restaurants close for roughly a week from 29 December, and transport books out. And Shibuya's street countdown has been scaled back or cancelled in recent years, so check the latest before you build your night around it. Our Tokyo guide has the rest.

6. Paris, France

Paris does New Year's Eve on the Champs-Élysées, where the countdown, the light show and the fireworks centre on the Arc de Triomphe. For something calmer, a Seine dinner cruise passes the Eiffel Tower, which sparkles for five minutes on the hour after dark.

Expect around 8°C and busy streets all night; the metro is the easiest way home. December is a good month in the city in any case, with lights and markets everywhere. Find more in our Paris guide.

7. Las Vegas, USA

On New Year's Eve the Las Vegas Strip closes to traffic and fills with people, and fireworks go off from the casino rooftops at midnight. Add the concerts and headline shows, and this is the most high-energy night on the list.

It's also the most expensive night of the year in a city that is otherwise at its cheapest in December. Room rates multiply and hotels set minimum stays, so book early and read the conditions. It gets cold at night in the desert, so bring a jacket for the Strip. More in our Las Vegas guide.

8. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town rings in the year at the V&A Waterfront, with live music, food and a fireworks display that works well for families. Hike Table Mountain or Lion's Head in the morning while it's cooler, and spend the evening by the water.

The honest note: mid-December to mid-January is the South African school holiday, when the city is at its fullest and accommodation costs the most. Book months ahead. Our Cape Town guide covers the neighbourhoods.

9. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh's Hogmanay is the New Year's festival the rest of the world copies. It runs over several days around 31 December: traditionally a Torchlight Procession through the Old Town on 30 December, then the street party on Princes Street, with the midnight fireworks going up from Edinburgh Castle.

Both the procession and the street party are ticketed, and the programme and tickets usually appear in the autumn on the official Hogmanay site. Rooms in the Old Town go early too. Pack a proper rain jacket, because December here is cold and often wet. Our Edinburgh guide has the rest.

10. Madeira, Portugal

Madeira's New Year's fireworks are famous enough that the display over Funchal Bay once entered Guinness World Records as the largest in the world, for the 2006/07 show. The record has since gone elsewhere, but the setting hasn't: the hills wrap around the bay like an amphitheatre, and in 2025/26 the eight minutes at midnight fired from 58 positions at once, 26 on the hillsides, 25 along the seafront and five on boats. That's why you can watch from almost anywhere in town.

The crowds gather at Praça do Povo and on the square in front of the cathedral. For the full panorama, watch from the water: the Lobo Marinho ferry's fireworks cruise was €190 an adult in 2024/25 (2026/27 prices aren't out yet), and catamarans leave the marina around 11 pm. There were 11 cruise ships in the bay on 31 December 2025, so the harbour itself is part of the show.

December is mild, with an average high of 21°C in Funchal, though it's also the wettest month of the year there. The festive season officially runs 1 December to 10 January, and hotels were 88% full on 30 and 31 December, so book months ahead rather than weeks. Flights are about 1 hour 45 from Lisbon and 3 hours 45 to 4 hours 25 from the UK, the Netherlands and Germany; from the airport the Aerobus into Funchal is €6.70 and a taxi €25-33.

How to plan New Year's Eve travel for 2026

New Year's Eve getaways in 2026 have one timing advantage: with 31 December on a Thursday, a four-night trip from Wednesday to Sunday covers the night itself and New Year's Day without using many leave days.

A few rules hold everywhere on this list:

  • Book the room before the flight. Rooms are what run out, and many hotels set a minimum stay of two or three nights over New Year.
  • Fly in on the 30th, not the 31st. A delay on the day itself costs you the whole point of the trip.
  • Check what closes. Tokyo shuts down for a week, and plenty of restaurants everywhere close on 1 January.
  • Know your way home at 1 am. Taxis are scarce after midnight in every city here, so pick a place you can walk back from, or know the late metro.

New Year's Eve travel packages or plan it yourself?

New Year's Eve travel packages bundle flights, hotel and often a ticket to a party or a cruise. They make sense where the ticket is the hard part: a Sydney harbour cruise, a Hogmanay street party, a New York rooftop.

Everywhere else, planning it yourself gives you more choice of neighbourhood and usually costs less. Put the dates, the flights and the night itself in one plan, and share it with whoever is coming along so everyone knows where to meet at 11 pm.

Luxury New Year vacations: where the splurge is worth it

If you want to spend big on one night, spend it where money actually buys a better view:

  • Sydney: a private harbour cruise or a harbourside restaurant booked months ahead.
  • New York: a rooftop party within sight of Times Square, without the pens.
  • Madeira: a boat on Funchal Bay with the fireworks all around you.
  • Rio: a beachfront hotel on Copacabana, where the party is right below your window.

For luxury New Year vacations, the room matters more than the dinner. A view of the fireworks from your own balcony is the one thing you can't get by turning up early.

Start the New Year with an Adventure

These New Year's Eve vacation ideas offer a mix of vibrant city celebrations, cultural traditions and scenic beauty. Whether you're after a high-energy party or a peaceful escape, each of these destinations gives you a unique way to celebrate and start the year with a memory.

Frequently asked questions about 10 Incredible New Year's Eve Vacation Ideas: 2026-2027 Edition

It depends on the night you want. For a huge party, New York, Las Vegas or Edinburgh's Hogmanay. For summer weather, Sydney, Rio or Cape Town. For something calmer and different, Tokyo's temple bells or Reykjavik's fireworks.

As early as you can, and no later than October for the popular cities. Sydney needs two to three months, Cape Town and Rio fill months ahead, and Edinburgh's tickets and rooms go in the autumn.

With 31 December 2026 on a Thursday, a four-night trip from Wednesday to Sunday works well. Edinburgh, Paris and Madeira suit a short trip from Europe; Sydney, Rio and Cape Town are worth a longer one.

Where the party or cruise ticket is the hard part, often yes. Where the city itself is the celebration, planning it yourself usually gives you a better location for less.

Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town are all in summer on 31 December, around 25°C. Madeira is the mild option closer to Europe.

Save these to your trip in Stippl and they are on your map before you land.
