Phong Nha is caves, from a dragon boat straight into one to a night camped on a beach inside the third-largest chamber on earth. The village still reads as farmland with guesthouses on it.
Phong Nha Ke Bang in a nutshell
The caves are the destination and everything else serves them. Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng holds hundreds of limestone caves under a karst landscape roughly 400 million years old, including Sơn Đoòng, the largest known cave on earth by volume: large enough to hold a forty-storey building in one chamber, with its own weather and its own jungle
The village is called Phong Nha and sits in the commune of Sơn Trạch, about 45 km from Đồng Hới. It is a single strip of guesthouses, tour offices and restaurants along the Son river, and it is where everyone stays. Our own data shows how completely: Đồng Hới, the only city and the only airport within 45 km, appears on 1.3% of Phong Nha trips
UNESCO inscribed the park in 2003 on geological criteria and extended the listing in 2015 on biodiversity criteria. It is one of the few World Heritage sites in Asia listed twice for two different reasons

The whole destination is caves, from short river caves to multi-day expeditions, and it is the one thing everybody who goes here comes back agreeing about.
People with a long trip
The typical trip carrying Phong Nha runs 65 days, the longest anywhere we cover. A two-week holiday that includes it gives up two other stops.
Scooter riders
The Bồng Lai valley loop and the west branch of the Hồ Chí Minh Road are as much of the destination as the caves.
Budget travellers
Accommodation runs €13–30 and the village has no luxury tier to speak of.
Anyone wanting a village
Tourism started here in 2011 and it still reads as farmland with guesthouses on it rather than a town built for visitors.
Maybe not for you: anyone travelling from September to November, when October alone brings 650 mm of rain and the caves close outright; and anyone hoping to book Sơn Đoòng at short notice, since the single operator sells out years ahead.
Hot and dry
April to August
The caving season proper: the year's sunshine, temperatures near forty at the peak, and every cave open.
Cool and dry
December to March
Everything open and nothing crowded, with very little sun and cool evenings in the village.
The flood
September to November
Most of the year's rain in three months, cave closures and impassable roads. Not a shoulder season but a closure.

Take the dragon boat up the Son river and straight into the cave mouth, then walk inside, about €6 for the cave and €15 for a boat shared by ten. The easiest cave and still the most dramatic entrance.
Paradise Cave
Walk the boardwalk through a chamber of enormous stalagmites, the first kilometre of thirty-one surveyed, about €10. On higher ground, so it is the cave that survives the wet season.
The Dark Cave
Zipline in, swim, wade through a mud chamber and kayak out, one ticket of about €14 and half a day. The best cheap adventure in the park.
The Bong Lai valley by scooter
Ride the karst valleys, the farm cafés, the duck stop and the Pub With Cold Beer, an easy half-day loop on a rented scooter for about €6. The reason to stay a third night.
Hang En
Trek two days with one night camping on a beach inside the world's third-largest cave chamber, about €300 with the licensed operator. The realistic version of the Son Doong experience.
The Ho Chi Minh Road west
Ride the wartime highway through the park on a scooter, the road several visitors rate above the caves. Empty, forested and a full day out to the Laos border road and back.
Phong Nha village
One strip on the river
A single strip along the Son river: guesthouses, homestays, tour offices, a handful of restaurants and bars, everything walkable and everything closed early. For everybody; every cave tour leaves from here.
Every tour at the door, and a village that is dark by ten.
Bong Lai valley
Farm stays, karst, the loop
The valley on the scooter loop: karst, farm cafés, the Pub With Cold Beer and a scatter of farm stays and eco-lodges among the fields. For independent travellers and a second night in the countryside.
The valley at dawn and a farm dinner, and a scooter for the village.
The riverbank lodges
Resorts below the karst
The resorts and bungalow lodges along the Son river outside the village, with pools, river views and the karst behind. For families and couples who want a pool after a cave.
A pool and the view, and a taxi or a bicycle to the strip.
Dong Hoi
Provincial city, airport, beach
The provincial city forty-five kilometres east: the airport, the railway station, Nhat Le beach and seafood on the river. For a night before a flight; where you land, not where you stay.
The airport and a beach, and an hour from the caves.

Stay in Phong Nha village, in a river-facing room: the strip is short enough that location barely matters otherwise, and value here is exceptional, with €13 to €30 buying more than anywhere else on the route. Most people give Phong Nha 2 nights on Stippl. There is no luxury tier, and some places close in the October and November floods.
Phong Nha village
Guesthouses, homestays and hostels along the strip, dorms €5 to €8, doubles €13 to €30, with river views at the top.
Bong Lai valley
Farm stays and eco-lodges among the fields, €15 to €50, with a scooter for everything.
The riverbank lodges
Bungalow lodges and small resorts with pools outside the village, €40 to €100.
Dong Hoi
City hotels and beach resorts near the airport and the station, €15 to €60, for a night before a flight.
Quảng Bình's own noodle soup: thick hand-cut rice noodles in a fish or pork broth, eaten for breakfast
A small crisp savoury pancake with pork and prawn, folded into herbs, the central-coast cousin of bánh xèo
Translucent tapioca dumplings with prawn and pork, steamed in banana leaf
Freshwater fish from the Son river, grilled or in hotpot
The Bồng Lai valley duck stop is a scooter-loop institution in its own right
The Pub With Cold Beer, reached by a rough track, is named as an attraction rather than a bar

The valley farms are working
The scooter-loop stops are people's homes and fields, the ones that host visitors included; a greeting at the gate and a purchase at the duck stop is the arrangement.
The cave guides are villagers
The caving operator's model is built on employing them, porters and cooks included; the ticket supports the village's economy, which is why the village is the base.
Unexploded ordnance is live
The Ho Chi Minh Trail ran through this province and clearance continues; stay on paths and tracks in the countryside, and do not pick up metal.
The calendar is inverted
September to November are closures, not showers: the caves flood and the tours stop. Plan on the central coast's seasons, not the north's.

Son Doong is the largest known cave on earth by volume. A chamber inside could hold a forty-storey building, it has its own weather system, and a jungle grows under a collapsed ceiling.
The world's largest cave went unmeasured for eighteen years. A local farmer found Son Doong in 1991, and it was not surveyed until a British caving team reached it in 2009.
Access to Son Doong is capped at 1,000 people a year. One operator is licensed, the expedition takes six days and costs about €2,600, and it sells out more than a year ahead.
Phong Nha Cave held a North Vietnamese field hospital. Villagers sheltered from the bombing in the cave system, and the Ho Chi Minh Trail ran through the park.
The karst is around 400 million years old. It is among the oldest in Asia, and UNESCO listed the park twice, in 2003 for geology and in 2015 for biodiversity.
Tourism here only began around 2011. The village is a strip of new guesthouses rather than an old town, and the Pub With Cold Beer grew from a shack serving loggers.
Dong Hoi has the connections
The village has neither airport nor railway; every arrival is a forty-five-minute transfer from Dong Hoi, arranged by the guesthouse for about €8. Almost nobody records the city they came through.
The natural break before Hue
On the long overnight from the north it is the stop that splits it: Ninh Binh is eleven hours away and Hue four. Sleep here, not on the bus.
A scooter is the transport
Most guesthouses rent them for about €6, and the valley loop, the show caves and the Ho Chi Minh Road west are all reachable on one. The valley tracks turn rough after rain.
How long to stay
Most people give Phong Nha 2 nights on Stippl, and it comes about 37 days days into a trip. Two caves and the valley loop need the three.
The caves close in the floods
Between September and November the rain shuts the caves by order and the valley roads go under. Cave tours cancel at short notice in the shoulder months, and the reputable operators refund.
Ordnance is still in the fields
The province sat on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and was among the most heavily bombed places on earth. Stay on the tracks and the paths, and never pick anything metal up.
Between Hue and the north, as a two-night stop reached by train or bus to Dong Hoi and a transfer to the village. Lay the centre out in Stippl and check the season first; September to November closes caves. Show the route to people who have done it, in subreddits like r/VietnamTravel, and say which caves you want.
Two is what almost everyone books: one show cave and one valley day. Most people give Phong Nha 2 nights on Stippl and only 5.8% of stops run to four or more. Three adds the scooter loop through the farms and the Dark Cave, which is the day people rate highest.
A long one. Phong Nha comes about 37 days days into a trip planned on Stippl, and 21.5% of Vietnam trips include it, so it is the stop that marks a month-long route rather than a fortnight. Dong Hoi is where you land, not where you stay.
Only if you booked more than a year ago. A thousand permits a year, one licensed operator, six days and a price in the thousands, sold out well into the following year. Hang En is the two-day version at roughly a tenth of the price and books months ahead; the show caves need no booking at all.
Phong Nha Cave for the boat entrance, Paradise Cave for the scale, the Dark Cave for the adventure; the Dark Cave ticket includes the zipline, the mud bath and the kayak, and it is the one families and groups come back talking about. Paradise is the one to see in the rain.
February to April is the best window. May to August is dry and very hot, and September to November floods and closes the caves: that is a closure, not a shoulder season, and the calendar here is inverted from the north's. Travellers plan Phong Nha 65 days ahead on Stippl; check which caves are open before booking in the shoulder months.
