Ha Long Bay is one night on the water between the karsts, and the kayak into a sea cave is the image everyone brings back. From May the sea is warm enough to swim off the boat.
Ha Long Bay in a nutshell
The destination is a boat, not a place. Every source organises its advice around which cruise to take rather than what to, and our own data agrees to an unusual degree: 45.8% of stays are a single night and 81.5% are one or two: the shape of a product schedule, not of a place people linger
Around 1,600 limestone islands and islets rise from the Gulf of Tonkin across roughly 1,553 km², the eroded remains of a limestone platform. The bay divides into three named parts: Hạ Long proper in the centre, Bái Tử Long to the north-east, and Lan Hạ to the south-west around Cát Bà
On 16 September 2023 UNESCO extended the property to include the Cát Bà Archipelago. The site is now inscribed as Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, after original listings in 1994 (scenic value) and 2000 (geology). The bay and the island are one World Heritage property and two travel decisions: see the note under Neighbourhoods

Download the appFirst-time visitors to Vietnam
Ha Long Bay is on 37.6% of Vietnam trips on Stippl, and it sits on the ordinary two-week holiday rather than the long one.
Anyone with a night from Hanoi
The standard cruise is one night out and back, and the typical stay is 2 nights all in.
Photographers, in season
March to May gives the best visibility; January and February are misty and the karst disappears.
Kayakers and swimmers
From May onwards the sea is warm, and the kayak session and the swim stop are what people remember from a cruise.
Independents
Cat Ba is cheaper, less rushed and puts you in Lan Ha rather than the busiest water, and plenty of people build the whole visit around it instead.
Maybe not for you: anyone who wants solitude on the standard route, since some 500 boats stop in the same places; anyone with a fixed date in typhoon season, because the port authority can suspend every vessel; and anyone economising blindly, given the cheapest-tour record.
Autumn window
October and November
The best weeks of the year: warm water, six hours of sun and the rain gone.
Spring window
April and May
Warming, the sea swimmable and the sunshine climbing: the best of the first half.
Monsoon and typhoon
June to September
The wettest months and the season in which cruises get cancelled by decree when a storm is forecast.
Cool and dull
December to March
Sailable, hazy and cold on deck, with the least sun of the year and the karst often invisible.

The overnight cruise
Board late morning, sail between the karsts, sleep on the water and return the next midday. This is the destination and everything else is a variation on it; from about €120 a night with meals, and the mid-range boats are the value.
Kayaking into a sea cave
Paddle through a rock arch into an enclosed lagoon, the single image every visitor returns with. Included on most cruises, and the guide times it for the tide.
Swimming off the boat
Jump from the deck in the afternoon stop; from May to October the sea runs warm and the swim is the part of the itinerary people describe most warmly. In winter it is a look, not a swim.
A floating fishing village
Visit the clusters of houses and fish pens moored against the rocks, still worked, the closest thing the bay has to a cultural sight. Vung Vieng is the one most boats stop at; a rowing boat takes you in.
Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba
Take a day boat from Cat Ba island into the same landscape with a fraction of the traffic, about €25 with lunch and a kayak. The independent traveller's version of the bay.
A Bai Tu Long route
Book a boat into the north-eastern third of the bay, with fewer operators and longer itineraries, for the emptier version of the same karsts. Two nights is the usual booking and the right one.
On the water
A junk between the karsts
Where the destination happens: one or two nights on a boat between the limestone towers, with kayaking, a cave stop and a swim, and every cabin grade from dorm to suite. For everybody; nothing on shore competes with it.
The bay itself, and a cabin chosen from photographs you cannot verify.
Ha Long City
Port, cable car, resort hotels
The mainland port and a modern resort city with a cable car, a Ferris wheel and international hotels, where the boats leave from. For the night before an early boat and for a hotel pool.
The pier at the door, and a resort city with no reason to stay after the boat.
Cat Ba Island
Hostel town, national park, Lan Ha
The largest island in the archipelago with a national park, climbing, beaches and a town of hostels, and day boats into Lan Ha well below cruise prices. For independent travellers with more than two days.
The bay on your own terms, and four hours from Hanoi.
Bai Tu Long Bay
The quiet permit route
The north-eastern third: the same karst with a fraction of the boats, sold as the quieter route on longer itineraries by fewer operators. For second visits and for anyone who wants the bay without the queue at the cave.
The same landscape with nobody in it, and a longer, pricier cruise.
See every Ha Long Bay neighbourhood on one map
Save the areas you like and Stippl plots your days so you're not crossing the city twice.
Sleep on the water: the cabin is the accommodation, and a smaller boat buys a different route rather than a bigger bed. Two nights is what it takes to reach the quieter water, though 45.8% of Ha Long Bay stops planned on Stippl are a single night. Ha Long City is worth exactly one night before an early departure, and Cat Ba is where the independent bed is.
On the water
Cabins on a shared boat, €90 to €150 a night with meals on the mid-range boats, and €250 and up on the small luxury ones.
Ha Long City
International-standard hotels and resort towers by the marina, €40 to €120, for the night before the boat.
Cat Ba Island
Hostels and harbour-front guesthouses in the town, €5 to €40, at a fraction of a cruise cabin.
Bai Tu Long Bay
The same cabins on longer itineraries with fewer operators, €120 to €300 a night, sold as the quiet route.
Hạ Long's signature: pounded squid cakes, fried, eaten with rice or in a bánh mì. The city's one genuine culinary claim
Dried peanut worm from the tidal flats, used to sweeten pho broth and sold at eye-watering prices
A local clam, grilled or steamed, often served with rice wine
The cruise dinner: prawns, crab, squid, fish and rice, served at a fixed hour to a fixed menu
Fish and shellfish bought from the pens the boats moor beside

The floating villages are homes
Several are partly relocated and partly maintained for visitors; photograph people with the same restraint you would use anywhere else, and buy from the rowing boats if you want to give something.
Crews work long, cheap shifts
Tipping at the end of a cruise is customary rather than expected; about €5 a guest in an envelope to the crew is the going rate on a two-day boat.
The pearl stop is optional
The visit to the pearl farm and the shop on board are a standard part of the itinerary; nothing about buying is compulsory, and the crew will not press.
The bay closes in weather
A suspension by the port authority in typhoon season is non-negotiable and refunds depend on the operator; keep the day after the cruise loose from June to October.

The name Ha Long means descending dragon. In the legend, dragons sent by the gods spat jewels that became the islands, forming a barrier against invaders from the sea.
UNESCO has listed the bay three times for three different reasons. In 1994 for scenic value, in 2000 for geology, and in 2023 the property was extended to take in the Cat Ba archipelago.
The karsts were a coral reef about 500 million years ago. The limestone is a marine platform, later drowned and eroded into roughly 1,600 pillars across 1,553 square kilometres.
The Cat Ba langur is one of the rarest primates on earth. Fewer than a hundred individuals survive, all of them on this archipelago, and none in any zoo.
A dried marine worm from these tidal flats sweetens northern pho. Sa sung is among the most expensive food ingredients in Vietnam, and a handful goes into the broth in place of sugar.
About 500 licensed tourist boats work the bay. Roughly 200 are overnight cruises and 300 are day boats, with 200 more licensed in Lan Ha, and the authorities are discussing a cap.
The transfer is in the fare
Everything arrives by road from Hanoi, two and a half hours on the expressway, and every cruise includes the bus. Nobody books it separately.
The cruise is a fixed clock
Boarding is late morning and return is midday the next day, so a one-night cruise buys twenty-four hours with only a few on the water. Two nights is the version that feels like a trip.
Book on a platform with reviews
Not through a street agent in the Old Quarter. Boats that do not match the listing and itineraries cut short are the common complaints, and the reviews are where they show.
Most people stay one night
45.8% of stops are a single night, and the bay arrives about 14 days days into a trip. The two-night boats go further into Bai Tu Long and are the better buy.
Storm suspensions are total
When a typhoon approaches the authorities stop every tourist vessel leaving port; a boat capsized in a 2025 squall with thirty-nine dead. Keep a spare day in typhoon season and pick a proven operator.
Buy the Cat Ba through ticket
Arranging the Ha Long City to Cat Ba hop on arrival attracts touts and inflated fares. The combined ticket from Hanoi, about €15, lands you at Cat Ba Town.
As one fixed night in a Hanoi-based route, booked on the boat's recent reviews rather than its photographs. Lay the northern loop out in Stippl with a loose day after the cruise; the port authority suspends all boats in bad weather. Then show the plan to people who have done it, in subreddits like r/VietnamTravel, and say what boat size you want.
One night is what almost everyone does and it stays in the busiest section of the bay: 45.8% of Ha Long stops planned on Stippl are a single night and only 4.1% run past three. Two nights reaches the quiet water at Bai Tu Long; the second night is where the bay you came for is.
Early. The cruise comes about 14 days days into a trip planned on Stippl, which is the first week of a north-to-south route, straight after Hanoi. That is also the sensible order: the cruise is the fixed booking, and the rest of the north bends around it.
Yes for the landscape and no for the standard route. Pay for a smaller boat, take a Bai Tu Long itinerary, or base on Cat Ba and go into Lan Ha, which is the same karst with a tenth of the traffic. Around five hundred boats work this bay, and the cheapest tour on the strength of the photographs is the one to avoid.
The port authority suspends all tourist vessels. Cruises are cancelled, not delayed, refund policies vary by operator, and a suspension is non-negotiable. Build slack into the day after between June and October, and do not plan a flight or a night bus for the evening you are due back in the harbour.
Most people do not: they are alternatives. Ha Long Bay sits in 37.6% of Vietnam trips planned on Stippl and Cat Ba is rarely on the same one. Ha Long from Hanoi if you have two days and want it handled; Cat Ba if you have four and would rather choose your own boat and pace, cheaper and quieter.
