Ha Long Bay
The name means descending dragon, from a legend in which dragons spat out jewels that became the islands. The limestone was a coral reef before the sea cut it into pillars.

The destination is a boat, not a place. Every source organises its advice around which cruise to take rather than what to, and our own data agrees to an unusual degree: 45.8% of stays are a single night and 81.5% are one or two: the shape of a product schedule, not of a place people linger
Around 1,600 limestone islands and islets rise from the Gulf of Tonkin across roughly 1,553 km², the eroded remains of a limestone platform. The bay divides into three named parts: Hạ Long proper in the centre, Bái Tử Long to the north-east, and Lan Hạ to the south-west around Cát Bà
On 16 September 2023 UNESCO extended the property to include the Cát Bà Archipelago. The site is now inscribed as Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, after original listings in 1994 (scenic value) and 2000 (geology). The overnight cruise
boarding late morning, sailing between the karsts, sleeping on the water and returning the next midday. This is the destination; everything else is a variation on it.
Kayaking into a sea cave
paddling through a rock arch into an enclosed lagoon, which is the single image every source returns from with.
Swimming off the boat
from May to October the sea runs 27–30°, and the swim stop is the part of the itinerary people describe most warmly.
A floating fishing village
clusters of houses and fish pens moored against the rocks, still worked, and the closest thing the bay has to a cultural sight.

- Book through a platform where you can read recent reviews of the specific boat.
- Give dietary requirements when you book, not when you board.
- Take a light waterproof layer even in summer, the deck is exposed and the weather turns fast.
- Check the forecast before travelling in June–October, and expect a suspension to be non-negotiable.
- Consider Cát Bà if you have more than two days.

- Don't book the cheapest tour on the strength of the photographs.
- Don't plan anything tight for the day after a cruise in typhoon season.
- Don't expect solitude on the standard route, around 500 boats work this bay.
- Don't treat the one-night cruise as seeing the whole bay; it stays in the busiest section.

No airport, no railway
Everything arrives by road from Hanoi, and the expressway has cut the journey to two and a half hours from what used to be four

Boats sail on a fixed schedule
typically boarding late morning and returning midday the next day. A one-night cruise buys roughly 24 hours of which about 18 are on the water

39 died here in July 2025
the tourist boat Wonder Sea capsized in a sudden squall on the 19th, with 49 aboard. It is the deadliest tourist-boat accident in the bay's history and it happened in clear conditions minutes before the storm hit
All 500 boats now carry AIS
the regulatory response put transponders on and tighter enforcement of departure suspensions. Whether it has changed operator behaviour is not something this sources can assess

One night is what almost everyone does and it stays in the busiest section of the bay. Two nights reaches the quiet water. 45.8% of our stays are a single night and 4.1% run past three.
Sources say yes for the landscape and no for the standard route. The consistent recommendation is to pay for a smaller boat, take a Bái Tử Long route, or base on Cát Bà and go into Lan Hạ.
From Hanoi if you have two days and want it handled. From Cát Bà if you have four and would rather choose your own pace, it is cheaper and quieter.
The port authority suspends all tourist vessels. Cruises are cancelled, not delayed, and refund policies vary by operator. Build slack into the following day between June and October.
39 people died when the Wonder Sea capsized in a July 2025 squall. AIS is now mandatory on all licensed boats and suspensions are enforced. Choose a reputable operator and take the weather seriously.
April–May and October–November. February and March average an hour and a half of sunshine a day.
Our own travellers overwhelmingly do not: 85.8% of Hạ Long trips carry no Cát Bà stop, and Cát Bà is the only destination in the companion table below the mechanical floor. They are alternatives.
