- Cat Ba is planned only 46 days ahead on Stippl, and 30.8% of its plans are made inside a fortnight, the most last-minute stop in Vietnam. It is the island people switch to from Ha Long on the day, which works in every season but Tet.
- The Lan Ha Bay boats are cancelled by decree in a typhoon warning, June to September. The climbing and the national-park walk still work on a cancelled day; the lagoons do not.
- Tet in late January or February fills the island with domestic tourists and empties parts of the service trade. It lands inside the hazy season, so the fortnight after it is the one to aim for in winter.

Things to do in Cat Ba Island
A Lan Ha Bay day boat
Take the day boat for the reason most people come: floating fishing villages, a kayak into a lagoon, a swim off a beach and lunch aboard, with far fewer boats than the famous bay next door. About €25 from the harbour.
Walking across the national park
Take the early bus to the western trailhead, climb to the Ngu Lam viewpoint and walk out to the coast for a boat back to town, about six hours. About €3 park entry, and a guide is optional on the marked route.
Climbing on the karst
Climb sport routes and deep-water solo on limestone walls that rise straight out of the sea, with the operators on the harbour; a half day runs about €40 with gear and a boat. No experience needed for the beginner walls.
Hospital Cave
Visit the underground field hospital used until 1975, still fitted out on three floors inside the rock, about €2 and thirty minutes. The guided visit is what makes it; ask for it at the entrance.
Cannon Fort at sunset
Walk up to the Japanese-built gun position on the ridge above town for the widest view of the bay and a café at the top, about €3. Twenty minutes on foot from the harbour, and go an hour before dark.
Riding the island end to end
Rent a scooter for about €6 and ride the two roads to the north coast, with almost no traffic and the karst offshore the whole way. Half a day, and the beaches at the far end are empty.

Where to stay in Cat Ba Island
Stay in Cat Ba town unless you have a specific reason not to: the boats, the buses and the seafood strip are on the one curved waterfront, and anywhere else on the island is isolated. Most people give Cat Ba 2 nights on Stippl, one ashore and one on the water. Book ahead in high season; at least one well-liked hostel takes no reservations at all.

Harbour-front guesthouses and small hotels, dorms €5 to €10 and doubles €15 to €40, with bungalows a short walk out.
Cat Co beaches
The island's few resorts, €60 to €150, and one five-star on the cove from €200, the only real swimming.

Family homestays and bungalows among the fields, €10 to €30 with dinner, reached on foot or by boat.

Cat Ba Island customs and what not to do
A fishing island first
The floating farms in Lan Ha Bay are somebody's livelihood, not an exhibit; boat operators visit them by arrangement, and you buy the seafood you photograph.
The war history is recent
Hospital Cave was in use until 1975 and is sometimes guided by veterans; it is treated as a memorial, so voices down and no posing on the beds.
Cover up off the beach
Swimwear belongs on the Cat Co sand, not on the harbour front or in the town's restaurants; a shirt for the walk between the two.
The park has an endemic primate
The Cat Ba langur is one of the rarest in the world and the reason the park exists; stay on the marked trails, take rubbish out and leave the drone at home.
Do
- Book the day boat through your guesthouse or a harbour office and compare two before paying
- Carry cash; card acceptance thins out fast away from the town front
- Take proper shoes for the park climb; the summit scramble is rock, not path
- Bargain for boats and bikes, and not in restaurants
Don't
- Route yourself via Ha Long City to save a fare; you land at the wrong end of the island
- Count on clear weather in February and March, whatever the dry-season label says
- Swim far off the town front; the harbour is a working one
- Feed or approach the langurs if a boat gets close

Fun facts about Cat Ba Island
The Cat Ba langur lives on this island and nowhere else on earth. The national park is the entire world range of the golden-headed leaf monkey, and fewer than a hundred individuals survive.
Lan Ha Bay holds over 300 islands. It has the same drowned-karst geology as Ha Long Bay next door and a small fraction of the big-boat traffic.
Hospital Cave was an underground field hospital until 1975. The three-storey cave north of the town treated the wounded through the bombing, and the Cannon Fort above it was built by the Japanese.
The 2023 UNESCO extension made this Vietnam's first World Heritage site across two provinces. Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba archipelago are now one inscribed property, and every guidebook written before it says otherwise.

Local tips for Cat Ba Island
Go via Haiphong
Boats from Haiphong land at or near Cat Ba Town; the Ha Long side lands you at the far end with a bus to add. The cable car from Cat Hai replaced the ferry.
Book a day ahead in season
The bus-and-boat tickets, the Lan Ha boat trip and the room all sell out on summer weekends and in the autumn. Book the three together through the same office.
A scooter is the tool
Two main roads, very little traffic and rental from any guesthouse for about €6. Riding without a valid licence is illegal, and enforcement varies by week.
How long to stay
Most people give Cat Ba 2 nights on Stippl: one Lan Ha boat day and one for the national park or the climbing. The town after dark is small.
Typhoon season strands people
From July to October services in the bay are suspended when a storm approaches, sometimes for days. Do not book a flight for the morning after a Cat Ba night in those months.
The summit is a scramble
The Ngu Lam viewpoint walk in the park is loose ground, sharp limestone and high humidity, not a stroll. Real shoes, two litres of water and the morning.
Cat Ba Island questions, answered
As the Hanoi-side bay stop, in place of a Ha Long cruise rather than as well as one. Lay the northern loop out in Stippl and give Cat Ba its own nights; the bus-and-boat transfer eats most of a day each way. Then show the route to people who have done it, in subreddits like r/VietnamTravel or the Facebook groups.
Two nights covers the bay and the park, and three is the comfortable number. Most people give Cat Ba 2 nights on Stippl, and only 20.9% of stops are a single night, which is the sensible verdict on a place that takes four hours to reach.
Geologically yes. Lan Ha Bay is the same drowned karst under a different provincial name, and both now sit inside one World Heritage property. What differs is the boats: a Lan Ha day boat from Cat Ba town carries a dozen people and a Ha Long cruise carries a hundred.
Later than most of Vietnam. Travellers leave 46 days between planning a Cat Ba stop on Stippl and arriving, and 30.8% of stops are added in the last fortnight, usually from Hanoi once the weather forecast is in. Boats and beds are rarely the constraint outside the summer weekends.
One combined bus-and-boat ticket from the Old Quarter, three and a half to four and a half hours door to door. Go via Haiphong, not Ha Long City, or you land at the wrong end of the island. The cable car has replaced the ferry queue on the Haiphong side and is now part of the standard transfer.
Not sensibly. Four hours each way leaves no day, and the bay boats leave in the morning; January is the busiest month for Cat Ba starts planned on Stippl, and even then almost nobody plans it as a same-day return. A Ha Long day cruise is the honest substitute for one spare day.
