Cat Ba is the largest island in the Ha Long Bay archipelago, and the only one with a town on it. Almost everything a traveller does here starts from Cat Ba Town on the south coast: boats, climbing, park buses, hostels and the seafood strip are all inside a few hundred metres of the harbour
The reason people come is that the scenery is Ha Long Bay's and the prices are not. The island sits in Lan Ha Bay, an administratively separate bay with the same drowned-karst geology; day boats out of Cat Ba Town run a fraction of what the mainland cruise ports charge for the same landscape
More than half the island is Cat Ba National Park, a protected block of limestone jungle with marked trails, a summit viewpoint and a show cave

Stay in Cat Ba Town unless you have a specific reason not to. Every source says the same thing and gives the same reason: the boats, the buses and the food are all there, and anywhere else on the island is isolated

- Don't count on clear weather in February and March, whatever the "dry season" label says
- Don't swim far off the town front; the harbour is a working one

Go via Haiphong
not via Ha Long City. Boats from Haiphong land at or near Cat Ba Town; boats from the Ha Long side land at the far end of the island and leave you a long road transfer
The cable car is the crossing
and it postdates our sources: a nine-to-ten-minute span from Cat Hai to Phu Long, against a ferry that took twenty minutes plus a queue
Book a day ahead in season
and book the boat trip and the room too
A scooter is the tool here
Two main roads, very little traffic, and rental from town
Typhoon season is the hazard
and it is procedural as much as physical: services in this bay are suspended when a storm approaches, and travellers get stranded a day
The summit is a scramble
not a walk. Loose ground, sharp limestone and high humidity; accounts describe people struggling in the wrong footwear
Frequently asked questions about Cat Ba Island
Geologically yes. Lan Ha Bay is the same drowned karst under a different provincial name, and since September 2023 both sit inside one World Heritage property.
Two nights covers the bay and the park; three is the comfortable number and the one our sources and our own data both give. Our own travellers typically plan two.
One combined bus-and-boat ticket from the Old Quarter, 3.5 to 4.5 hours door to door. Go via Haiphong, not Ha Long City.
It replaces the ferry crossing with a nine-minute span for a small fee and removes the ferry queue. It is now part of the standard transfer.
October–November first, April–May second. Avoid June–September if a cancelled boat day would break your trip.
Not sensibly. Four hours each way leaves no day. Our data agrees: Cat Ba is almost never a trip's only stop.
