The caves are the destination and everything else serves them. Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng holds hundreds of limestone caves under a karst landscape roughly 400 million years old, including Sơn Đoòng, the largest known cave on earth by volume: large enough to hold a forty-storey building in one chamber, with its own weather and its own jungle
The village is called Phong Nha and sits in the commune of Sơn Trạch, about 45 km from Đồng Hới. It is a single strip of guesthouses, tour offices and restaurants along the Son river, and it is where everyone stays. Our own data shows how completely: Đồng Hới, the only city and the only airport within 45 km, appears on 1.3% of Phong Nha trips
UNESCO inscribed the park in 2003 on geological criteria and extended the listing in 2015 on biodiversity criteria. It is one of the few World Heritage sites in Asia listed twice for two different reasons

a real issue in this province. Stay on paths and tracks in the countryside; the Hồ Chí Minh Trail ran through here and clearance work continues

- Stay in the village, not in Đồng Hới.

- Don't expect a luxury tier; there mostly isn't one.

February to April is the best window. May to August is dry and very hot. September to November floods and closes caves: that is a closure, not a shoulder season.
