Negombo is a Catholic fishing city ten kilometres from the runway, and the fish market is the reason to walk out of your hotel. The Lellama auctions start before dawn, the beached oruwa catamarans and the drying racks are as much of it as the stalls. St Mary's is neoclassical outside and painted like a Hindu temple within, the Dutch fort gate still fronts a working prison, and the lagoon and the Hamilton Canal are an hour by boat through mangroves. The town calls itself Little Rome and means it.
Negombo replaces Colombo rather than joining it. Six in ten of the trips that carry Negombo begin there and four in ten end there, and filing it cuts the odds of also filing the capital by three quarters. Travellers pick the beach town or the city for their airport nights, never both, and a Negombo bed is the cheapest we log anywhere on the loop.
So take 1 night here on the way in, when the transfer is fifteen minutes and you are too tired for Colombo traffic. The arrival night runs longer than the departure one, which is travellers buying recovery time in one direction and none in the other. Skip Negombo if you came for a beach, because this one is wide, straight and openly described as shabby, and the south coast does it far better.

- Use the ride-hailing app for the airport run and agree the destination in it, not verbally.
- Go to the fish market early, the auction is before dawn and it is over by mid-morning.
- Book a room with a pool if you are arriving off a long-haul flight.
Don't
- Don't come to Negombo for the beach, go south for that.
- Don't expect the fort to be a fort; the gate and the clock tower are what remain.
- Don't plan a second night on the way out unless you want a slow day.

The Dutch fort was demolished by the British to build a prison, and the prison is still a prison: the only part of the fort in good condition is the part you cannot enter
Hamilton Canal is Dutch and named after a Briton: cut for the spice trade, renamed for a colonial revenue agent
Negombo substitutes for Colombo; it does not accompany it. Odds ratio 0.261, and the Kandy control on the same construction returns 1.465

App, not the taxi rank
Use the ride-hailing app for the airport transfer. Two sources name it specifically and one quotes LKR 900 for the tuk-tuk; negotiating at the rank costs materially more
A base, not a place
Negombo is a base to leave, not to move around. The strip is walkable, everything else is a tuk-tuk, and the onward journeys are all by road
The train isn't the way
The train exists and is not the way most people arrive: the station serves the town, the hotels are on the coast road, and arrivals come off a plane, not a platform
Open ocean, unsupervised
The sea here is open ocean and the beach is not supervised, a long straight west-facing shore with monsoon swell from May
Negombo questions, answered
Because the airport is here, not in Colombo. Negombo carries 8.0% of everything planned in Sri Lanka on Stippl, nearly all of it a first or last night, and the drive from arrivals takes twenty minutes against an hour into the capital. Put it into Stippl as the landing pad.
One night. 64.29% of Negombo stops planned on Stippl are a single night, the highest share on the island, and half a day covers what there is to do: the fish market at dawn, a boat on the lagoon and the old Dutch and Portuguese churches.
Very few. 6.53% of Negombo stops planned on Stippl carry no night at all and most of the rest are a single one, which is what a town beside an airport gets. The beach is wide and grey and the sea is rough, so there is no strong case for a second.
Negombo, on both the editorial consensus and what travellers actually plan: trips including Negombo are far less likely to include Colombo. It is twenty minutes from the airport rather than an hour, it costs less, and after a long flight that difference is the whole argument.
About ten kilometres, fifteen to twenty minutes by tuk-tuk, and app-priced rides make it cheap and unarguable. That proximity is the entire reason the town appears on Sri Lankan itineraries, and it is why hotels here will happily lay on breakfast at four in the morning.
The fish market at dawn, which is a working auction rather than a spectacle laid on for visitors. A boat out through the canals onto the lagoon. And the Portuguese and Dutch churches, which are still full on a Sunday morning. Half a day covers all three comfortably.
