Airlie Beach: what to expect

What follows sits on 366,000+ stops planned in Australia on Stippl.

Airlie Beach is the mainland door to the Whitsundays: you sleep here and you sail from here. Every tour leaves the marina, and the multi-day sailing trip, two nights on board with snorkel stops, is what the town exists for. Whitehaven's silica sand squeaks underfoot and Hill Inlet swirls below the lookout above it. The fringing reefs off the islands are closer and cheaper than an outer-reef day from Cairns, and Heart Reef only resolves from the air.

Airlie Beach is a bed rather than a destination, and the plans say so. It turns up on fewer Australian trips than its size predicts, and the trips it does turn up on are among the longest in the country, carrying close to fourteen Australian stops. The Whitsundays sit beside it as a separate stop on three quarters of those trips, which means people are logging the boat and the bunk as two different things.

Build 2 nights round a sailing trip and you have the town's whole point. June to September is dry, mild and outside stinger season, which is the window worth planning into. Choose the boat carefully, because it sets the tone of the whole two days. And do not expect to swim in town: there is no beach, which is why the free patrolled lagoon on the foreshore was built.

Who Airlie Beach is for

Backpackers on the east coast

Airlie is a fixture of the Cairns to Sydney route and the sailing trip is its rite of passage, with 2 nights the norm.

Sailors and would-be sailors

No experience is needed; the crew does everything, and two nights on the water is the standard trip.

Snorkellers

The fringing reefs off the islands are the draw, not the town, and the boats put you on them.

Party travellers

The boat you choose sets the tone, and the operators are open about which is which.

Maybe not for you: anyone wanting a beach town, since the town has no beach; travellers who need comfort on a boat; and visitors in the wet season, when the sea and the stingers both turn against you.

Wet season

December to April

The wettest months, stinger season and cyclone country, with the sailing trips still leaving but the water and the visibility both poor. Cyclone Debbie made landfall here in March 2017.

Shoulder

May

Drying out, the stinger season ending and the first calm weeks on the water. The prices are still low and the boats are not full.

Dry season

June to October

The season, and the reasons stack: dry, mild, calm water, the best visibility of the year, whales from June and outside stinger season. August and September are the driest months and the peak for sailing.

Build-up

November

Warm, drying towards the wet, and the stinger season opening again. Fine for a boat trip early in the month; the water needs a stinger suit by the end of it.

  • January is the month most travellers plan Australia for on Stippl, and Airlie Beach is planned about 89 days ahead. Only 11.6% of Airlie plans are made inside a fortnight, which fits a town whose whole point is a boat that sails on a schedule.
  • Stinger season runs November to May by the authorities, whatever the guides say. Four different windows circulate; the official one is the one the tour operators follow, and it means a stinger suit for every swim in those months.
  • The sailing trips book out in August and September. A two-night Whitsundays boat is the reason most people come, and the good boats sell weeks ahead in the dry season; the boat is the booking, the room in town is the afterthought.
  • Cyclone season runs the same months as the wet. A cyclone warning cancels every sailing and can close the road; a wet-season plan needs a day of slack after the boat, not a flight the same evening.

Things to do in Airlie Beach

01

A Whitsundays sailing trip

Book the two-night boat that is the reason the town exists as a destination, sleeping on board with snorkel stops and Whitehaven, from about €350. The boats differ in vibe, not route; pick on crowd and comfort.

02

Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet

Walk the silica sand so fine it squeaks and climb to the lookout over the swirling inlet, on every boat itinerary and on the day boats for about €120. The tide sets the colours; mid tide is the picture.

03

Snorkelling the fringing reefs

Snorkel off the islands, closer and cheaper than an outer-reef day from Cairns and included on the sailing trips. A stinger suit from November to May.

04

The lagoon

Swim in the free, patrolled lagoon on the foreshore, the only safe swim in town. Open from dawn, and the barbecues beside it are free too.

05

A scenic flight over Heart Reef

Fly over the reef formation that is only visible from the air, about €250 for an hour by seaplane or helicopter. Any boat trip that lists it as a stop is wrong.

06

Cedar Creek Falls

Drive forty minutes into the hinterland to the swimming hole under the falls and the lookouts on the way, free. The day off the water, and best after rain.

The neighbourhoods of Airlie Beach

NeighbourhoodWhat it's likeWhy visit

The Esplanade

The strip, hostels, the lagoon

The town strip: hostels, bars, tour desks and the free patrolled lagoon, the only safe swim in town. For first visits and backpackers who want the boats and the bars on foot.

Why:

Everything on foot and the lagoon, and a strip that runs late.

Coral Sea Marina

Where the boats leave

The main marina where the sailing trips depart, with the apartments and hotels above the berths and a walk into town along the front. For sailors and for the morning departure without a taxi.

Why:

The boat at the door, and a fifteen-minute walk to the strip.

Cannonvale

Residential, supermarkets, quieter

The quieter residential neighbour five minutes west, with the supermarkets for self-catering, family apartments and the bus into town. For families and longer stays.

Why:

Supermarkets and quiet, and a bus or a drive to the front.

Shute Harbour

The other departure point

The other departure point across the headland, for the island ferries, with a few apartments above the water and none of the town. For the ferry at dawn and for nothing else.

Why:

The ferries at the door, and a drive for any evening.

Proserpine

Airport town, inland

The mainland airport town twenty-five minutes inland: motels, the station and the cheaper flights in. For a late arrival and for nothing beyond a bed.

Why:

The cheap flight and a bed, and twenty-five minutes to the coast.

Where to stay in Airlie Beach

Stay on the Esplanade for a first visit: the hostels double as the booking agents for the boats, and the lagoon, the bars and the tour desks are on the same strip. Most people give Airlie Beach 2 nights on Stippl, which bracket a night or two on a boat. Book the boat before the bed; the popular sailings fill first and set everything else.

The Esplanade

Party and social hostels, dorms €25 to €45, and mid-range hotels behind the strip, €100 to €180.

Coral Sea Marina

Serviced apartments and hotels above the berths, €150 to €280, with the sailing trips below.

Cannonvale

Family apartments and holiday units near the supermarkets, €100 to €200, with the bus into town.

Shute Harbour

A few apartments above the water and none of the town, €120 to €220, for the dawn ferry.

Proserpine

Motels near the airport and the station, €80 to €130, for a late arrival and nothing more.

Before you go

Airlie Beach customs and what not to do

The boats have an etiquette

No glass aboard, a shared cooler, bunks below deck and lights out at a set hour on the party boats after past excesses; the crew's briefing is the rulebook.

Reef-safe sunscreen only

It is asked for on every reef trip and sold at the marina; the ordinary kind bleaches coral and the crew will notice the bottle.

Ngaro country

The Ngaro people are the traditional owners of the Whitsundays and the Ngaro Sea Trail crosses the islands with rock art at Nara Inlet; ask the operator whether the trip stops there.

The lagoon is the town's beach

The sea off town is stinger and crocodile water and nobody local swims in it; the free lagoon on the foreshore is where the town cools off, with lifeguards and lawn.

Do

  • Take the stinger suit the operator gives you, in season and inside the nets
  • Swim in the lagoon in town
  • Choose your boat on crowd and comfort, not price
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen

Don't

  • Swim at Cid Harbour, ever
  • Swim in the sea from town, or in the creeks
  • Bring glass on board
  • Touch the coral or stand on it at Whitehaven's reef edge

Trivia

Fun facts about Airlie Beach

01

Whitehaven Beach's sand is almost pure silica. It is fine enough to squeak underfoot and to clean jewellery with, and it stays cool in the sun because it does not hold heat.

02

Heart Reef can only be seen from the air. The small coral formation in the shape of a heart lies inside Hardy Reef, and landing or snorkelling on it is not permitted.

03

Airlie Beach built a lagoon because it has no swimmable beach. The free patrolled pool on the foreshore is the same civic solution Cairns arrived at, for the same reasons: stingers and mud.

04

The Whitsundays are 74 islands inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Whitsunday Island is the largest, and every tour to them leaves from Airlie Beach's marina.

05

Whitehaven runs seven kilometres along Whitsunday Island. Hill Inlet at its northern end shifts its white and turquoise pattern with every tide, which is why the lookout is on every sailing trip.

06

Airlie Beach is a bed rather than a destination on Stippl. Most stays here are built around a sailing trip, and the town's job is the marina and the night before the boat.

From people who live there

Local tips for Airlie Beach

A car for the region only

Worth it for the hinterland and the coast north; in the town itself it is dead weight. The lagoon, the marina and the strip are all on foot.

Take a daypack aboard

Leave the main bag at the hostel or the hotel and take a small one on the sailing boat; the cabins have no room for a case. Every operator stores luggage.

Most people stay two nights

32.3% of stops are a single night, which is the boat the next morning. Two nights on land plus two on the water is the usual shape.

Stingers from November to May

Box jellyfish and Irukandji on the same terms as Cairns, and the Irukandji pass through the nets. Wear the stinger suit the boat issues; the lagoon in town is the safe swim by design.

Cid Harbour is not for swimming

A cluster of shark attacks in 2018 on Whitsunday Island, including a fatality, and the government now says do not swim there. The skippers know; ask before jumping off the boat.

This is cyclone country

Cyclone Debbie made landfall here in March 2017. In the wet season a warning cancels every sailing and can close the road; keep a spare day after the boat.

Airlie Beach questions, answered

Book the boat first and build the nights around it. Trips that include Airlie Beach run 51 days on Stippl, and the sailing trips run on fixed departures, so the boat sets the dates rather than the other way round. Put a night either side of it into Stippl.

Two to four nights, built around the boat. Travellers planning Airlie Beach on Stippl give it 2 nights, which is usually one night before a two-day sailing trip and one after it. The town itself takes an evening and no more.

Not really: it is the base and the islands are the destination. 32.3% of Airlie Beach stops planned on Stippl are a single night, which is exactly what a departure point looks like. The lagoon, a dinner at the marina and an early night is what the town is for.

They all cover the same water, so choose by the crowd rather than the route: party boats, sociable mid-range boats, and quiet ones with a dozen berths. Check the headcount before booking, because that is what really decides the trip. Two nights aboard beats one for the same reason.

Not from the town, and never at Cid Harbour, where there have been fatal shark attacks. The lagoon on the foreshore is free, netted and where everybody goes. On the sailing trips you swim from the boat in the dry season, in a stinger suit, which the crew provide.

None at all. The crew sail the boat while you swim, snorkel and sit on the deck, and on most trips the only thing asked of you is pulling on a line occasionally. Bareboat charters, where you skipper it yourself, are the exception, and they do want experience.
