Airlie Beach is the mainland door to the Whitsundays: you sleep here and you sail from here. Every tour leaves the marina, and the multi-day sailing trip, two nights on board with snorkel stops, is what the town exists for. Whitehaven's silica sand squeaks underfoot and Hill Inlet swirls below the lookout above it. The fringing reefs off the islands are closer and cheaper than an outer-reef day from Cairns, and Heart Reef only resolves from the air.
Airlie Beach is a bed rather than a destination, and the plans say so. It turns up on fewer Australian trips than its size predicts, and the trips it does turn up on are among the longest in the country, carrying close to fourteen Australian stops. The Whitsundays sit beside it as a separate stop on three quarters of those trips, which means people are logging the boat and the bunk as two different things.
Build 2 nights round a sailing trip and you have the town's whole point. June to September is dry, mild and outside stinger season, which is the window worth planning into. Choose the boat carefully, because it sets the tone of the whole two days. And do not expect to swim in town: there is no beach, which is why the free patrolled lagoon on the foreshore was built.

Cid Harbour, on Whitsunday Island, had a cluster of shark attacks in 2018 including a fatality in November. The Queensland government responded with a five-point plan; swimming at Cid Harbour was prohibited and "no swimming" signs installed. Book the boat first and build the nights around it. Trips that include Airlie Beach run 51 days on Stippl, and the sailing trips run on fixed departures, so the boat sets the dates rather than the other way round. Put a night either side of it into Stippl.

Not really: it is the base and the islands are the destination. 32.3% of Airlie Beach stops planned on Stippl are a single night, which is exactly what a departure point looks like. The lagoon, a dinner at the marina and an early night is what the town is for.
They all cover the same water, so choose by the crowd rather than the route: party boats, sociable mid-range boats, and quiet ones with a dozen berths. Check the headcount before booking, because that is what really decides the trip. Two nights aboard beats one for the same reason.
Not from the town, and never at Cid Harbour, where there have been fatal shark attacks. The lagoon on the foreshore is free, netted and where everybody goes. On the sailing trips you swim from the boat in the dry season, in a stinger suit, which the crew provide.
None at all. The crew sail the boat while you swim, snorkel and sit on the deck, and on most trips the only thing asked of you is pulling on a line occasionally. Bareboat charters, where you skipper it yourself, are the exception, and they do want experience.
