Cairns is where two World Heritage areas meet, and neither of them is in the town. The Great Barrier Reef is ninety minutes to two hours offshore and the outer reef is where the living coral is. The Daintree, two hours north, is the oldest tropical rainforest on earth, with Mossman Gorge on Kuku Yalanji country at its southern end. Kuranda goes up by Scenic Railway and back by Skyrail, and the Atherton Tablelands string Millaa Millaa, Zillie and Ellinjaa along one short loop.
Reaching Cairns is a commitment, and the plans treat it as one. Trips that include Cairns carry roughly twice as many Australian stops as the national picture and run about seven weeks end to end. Barely three stops in a hundred here carry no night, against thirteen in Brisbane, and three quarters of Cairns stays run two nights or more.
Allow 3 nights at least, and five if the reef is why you came. May to October is the dry season, the calm sea and the clear water, and it falls outside stinger season. Pick a small operator over a pontoon. And do not plan on swimming in town: the city fronts an estuary of mudflats, which is exactly why the Esplanade Lagoon was built.

When to go to Cairns
- Cairns runs 26–32° all year while February takes 438 mm and August 27 mm. This is a wet/dry tropics, and the calendar question is rain and stingers, not heat
- the two reasons to avoid the same window are separate reasons
- May–October is the consensus window, our own data and the climate record; September is the most-named single month
- In the wet, parts of the Daintree including Cape Tribulation become inaccessible through flash-flood road closures; waterfalls, conversely, are at their best

Cairns customs and what not to do
Name the traditional owners
they are named across the region and should be named in any writing: Kuku Yalanji (Daintree and Mossman Gorge), Djabugay (Kuranda, which they call Ngunbay, "place of the platypus"), Yidinji (Babinda Boulders), Guru-Gulu Gungandji (Green Island)
Indigenous-guided is better
those experiences exist and are the better version of the same sight: the Dreamtime Walk at Mossman Gorge, Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel with Indigenous sea rangers, Pamagirri at Kuranda
Babinda Boulders is sacred
a place of significance to the Yidinji; visitors are asked to respect it, which is also the safety instruction

Not a "season"
Experts discourage the phrase "stinger season" entirely, because it implies stings do not happen outside it. They do
Irukandji syndrome
symptoms typically begin about 30 minutes after a sting that may barely be felt, severe pain, whole-body cramping, nausea, vomiting, sweating, headache, dangerous rises in blood pressure, and in serious cases cardiac complications. Symptoms can persist 4–30 hours. First aid is vinegar poured on the sting for 30 seconds, then 000
Nets don't stop them
Irukandji are small enough to pass through stinger nets. That is precisely why operators issue full-body stinger suits inside netted enclosures: a fact no sources article explains, leaving the suits looking like an optional extra
Cairns questions, answered
Around the reef day and the weather. Trips that include Cairns run 48 days on Stippl, so this is usually deep into a long east coast run. Put three nights into Stippl with the outer reef boat on the first full day, so a blown-out morning has somewhere to move to.
Three at a minimum, five ideally. Cairns gets 3 nights in the trips people plan on Stippl. One day for the outer reef, one for the Daintree or the Tablelands, and one spare for the weather, which you will probably end up using.
No. 20.8% of Cairns stops planned on Stippl are a single night, and a single night cannot hold a reef trip, which is a full day on a boat leaving early. If the reef is why you came to Queensland, this is not the stop to trim to save a day.
No. The city has no swimming beach, the sea carries crocodiles all year and stingers from November to May. Everyone swims in the Lagoon on the esplanade, which is free, or at a netted and patrolled beach north of the city in the dry season. Take the warning signs literally.
Outer. That is where the living coral is, and the day boats reach it in an hour and a half to two hours. Inner-reef trips are cheaper and shorter and show you a great deal less. If you get seasick, take something before you board rather than once you feel it.
Yes, and go with clear eyes. The reef came through a widespread bleaching event and monitoring shows uneven recovery since, so what you see depends heavily on the site. Outer-reef moorings and an operator who moves between them matter more than they used to. Ask where they are taking you.
