Most of this list sits in Amalfi town itself: the old maritime republic and the coast's transport hub, flatter and easier to walk than Positano, and reachable by ferry or bus from anywhere on the coast. A handful of picks are a short trip away, in Ravello, Praiano and Scala, and we've split the list in two so you know exactly which restaurants are in Amalfi town and which are worth the extra drive.

Restaurants in Amalfi town

These seven are all within walking distance of Amalfi's cathedral steps and the ferry dock, so you can eat, wander the old town, and be back at your hotel without a taxi. One thing worth knowing before you plan a night around any of them: several close for the winter, roughly November to March, when much of the coast quietens down and Amalfi and Sorrento are among the few towns that stay properly open. Outside that window, call ahead rather than assume a Tuesday closing day still applies.

1. Da Gemma

  • Address: Via Fra Gerardo Sasso, 11, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM, 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM (closed Wednesdays)
  • Average price per person: €50-80
  • Specialities: Seafood risotto, paccheri pasta with ragù, lemon-infused dishes
  • Website: trattoriadagemma.com · @trattoria_dagemma

A historic gem in Amalfi, Da Gemma is known for its seafood and traditional Mediterranean flavours, in an elegant but relaxed room that suits a romantic evening as easily as a refined dining experience. Try the signature ricciola in crosta di pane, a baked amberjack fish in a crispy bread crust.

2. La Caravella (Michelin Star)

  • Address: Via Matteo Camera, 12, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM (closed Tuesdays)
  • Average price per person: €80-150
  • Specialities: Gourmet seafood, tasting menus, lemon-infused desserts
  • Website: ristorantelacaravella.com · @lacaravellaamalfi

One of the oldest fine-dining restaurants in Amalfi, La Caravella combines history and innovation as the first restaurant in Southern Italy to receive a Michelin star, and it still impresses with refined flavours and a curated wine list. Book well in advance and opt for the chef's tasting menu for the full experience: Amalfi Coast trips planned with Stippl are booked about 125 days ahead on average, longer than anywhere else we track in Italy, and a table here is one more thing worth locking in that early rather than the week before you fly.

3. Ristorante Marina Grande

  • Address: Viale della Regione, 4, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM, 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM
  • Average price per person: €40-70
  • Specialities: Grilled octopus, fresh seafood platters, local wines
  • Website: ristorantemarinagrande.com · @ristorantemarinagrandeamalfi

Right on the beach, Marina Grande pairs sea views with fresh, locally sourced seafood, the kind of spot made for a sunset dinner with the waves as your soundtrack. Order the spaghetti alle vongole (clams) for an authentic taste of the Amalfi Coast.

4. L'Abside

  • Address: Piazza dei Dogi, 31, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM, 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM
  • Average price per person: €30-60
  • Specialities: Handmade pasta, grilled fish, limoncello
  • Website: ristorantelabside.it · @absideamalfi

For a cosy, family-run atmosphere, L'Abside serves traditional Campanian cuisine in generous portions with friendly service. Pair your meal with a glass of Fiano di Avellino, a crisp local white wine.

5. Eolo

  • Address: Via Pantaleone Comite, 3, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM (closed Tuesdays)
  • Average price per person: €70-120
  • Specialities: Lobster pasta, Amalfi-style seafood, local lemon cake
  • Website: @eolo_amalfi

Eolo has one of the best terraces in Amalfi and is an excellent choice for a romantic dinner over the coastline. Book a seaside table in advance, especially in high season, when the terrace fills fastest.

6. Taverna Buonvicino

  • Address: Largo Santa Maria Maggiore, 1, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM, 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM (closed Mondays)
  • Average price per person: €35-65
  • Specialities: Ravioli al limone, grilled meats, fresh seafood
  • Website: tavernabuonvicino.it · @ristorante_taverna_buonvicino

Hidden in a quiet square, Taverna Buonvicino has an intimate feel and authentic local flavours. The ravioli stuffed with ricotta and Amalfi lemon is a refreshing twist on a classic dish and worth ordering on its own.

7. Lo Smeraldino

  • Address: Piazzale dei Protontini, 1, 84011 Amalfi SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM
  • Average price per person: €40-70
  • Specialities: Grilled fish, seafood risotto, tiramisu
  • Website: @ristorantelosmeraldino

A favourite among locals, Lo Smeraldino is a waterfront restaurant with a strong selection of fresh seafood. The grilled branzino (sea bass) is a must-try, simply done and reliably good.

Worth the drive: restaurants in Ravello, Praiano and Scala

These three sit outside Amalfi town, so budget the time to get there on top of your dinner reservation. Ravello is 350 metres above the coast rather than on it, reachable by a 25-minute SITA bus from Amalfi, and noticeably quieter than anywhere at sea level once you're up there. Praiano is a short run along the coast road towards Positano, and Scala is a short drive further up from Ravello, tucked into the hills above the water. None of the three are places you stumble into by accident, which is exactly why they're on this list: each one earns the extra travel time with something Amalfi town itself doesn't have.

8. Il Flauto di Pan (Ravello)

  • Address: Via Santa Chiara, 26, 84010 Ravello SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM (closed Wednesdays)
  • Average price per person: €90-150
  • Specialities: Tasting menus, gourmet seafood, refined Mediterranean dishes
  • Website: hotelvillacimbrone.com · @villacimbrone

Set inside the grounds of Villa Cimbrone, this Michelin-starred restaurant pairs fine dining with one of the coast's best views, 350 metres above the water. Arrive early enough for a pre-dinner cocktail in the gardens before your table.

9. Trattoria Da Lorenzo (Scala)

  • Address: Via Fra Gerardo Sasso, 10, 84010 Scala SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM and 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM (closed Mondays)
  • Average price per person: €25-50
  • Specialities: Wild boar ragu, homemade pasta, local cheeses
  • Website: trattoriadalorenzo.com · @trattoriadalorenzo

A short drive from Amalfi, Trattoria Da Lorenzo is a hidden gem for hearty, rustic dishes in a relaxed setting, the kind of authentic mountain cuisine you won't find down at sea level.

10. Ristorante Il Pirata (Praiano)

  • Address: Via Terramare, 84010 Praiano SA, Italy
  • Opening hours: 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM
  • Average price per person: €50-90
  • Specialities: Seafood platters, gnocchi alla Sorrentina, local wines
  • Website: ilpiratamalficoast.com · @pirata.praiano

Set in a seaside cave, Il Pirata offers panoramic views and outstanding food for an unforgettable dining experience. Go for sunset drinks before dinner to make the most of the view before the sun drops behind Capri.

Savouring the flavours of Amalfi: tips for the ultimate foodie experience

The best restaurants in Amalfi offer more than a good meal; they're a way into the region's culinary traditions, whether you're eating by the sea or in a hilltop village. A few things to know before you sit down anywhere on this coast:

Embrace the local ingredients. The sfusato amalfitano lemon carries a PGI and is grown on stone terraces under pergolas, not just used as a garnish. It goes into limoncello, delizia al limone (the region's lemon-cream dessert) and plenty of savoury dishes too.

Pair your meal with local wines. The Amalfi Coast produces good wines like Fiano, Falanghina and Aglianico. Ask your waiter for a recommendation rather than defaulting to the house white.

Book a seaside table. Many of the restaurants above look straight over the coastline, and the water-facing tables go first. Reserve a few days ahead if the view matters to you.

Consider a lemon-terrace lunch. Some of the farms that grow the sfusato amalfitano lemon serve lunch under their own pergolas, which is arguably the best way to eat on this coast away from the water entirely.

If you're extending your Italian trip further south, Puglia is the natural next stop, with a coastline that runs from the Gargano cliffs to the Salento heel. Heading the other way, up into the north, Milan's hidden gem restaurants are the same kind of list for a completely different Italian kitchen: butter and rice instead of lemons and the sea.

Frequently asked questions about Italy

Da Gemma, La Caravella (Michelin-starred) and Ristorante Marina Grande are the three most booked in Amalfi town itself, covering fine dining, a historic seafood room and a beachfront table in that order.

Yes. La Caravella was the first restaurant in Southern Italy to earn a Michelin star and still runs a tasting menu. Il Flauto di Pan, inside Villa Cimbrone in Ravello, is the other Michelin-starred option on this list, a short trip out of Amalfi town.

Amalfi town covers most styles and budgets on foot. Drive out only for something specific: Ravello for the view and Il Flauto di Pan's tasting menu, Praiano for Il Pirata's cave setting and sunset, Scala for genuinely rustic mountain cooking you won't find at sea level.

For the fine-dining names (La Caravella, Eolo, Il Flauto di Pan) yes, and well ahead in high season. Amalfi Coast trips planned with Stippl are booked about 125 days out on average, longer than any other Italian destination we track, so build the reservation into your planning early rather than after you land.

Scialatielli ai frutti di mare (a short, thick pasta with seafood), the sfusato amalfitano lemon in everything from limoncello to delizia al limone, and colatura di alici, a fermented anchovy sauce from nearby Cetara that a few menus on this coast use by the drop.
