Koh Lipe sits inside a marine park with a reef you swim to from Sunrise Beach, and no roads but proper restaurants and dive schools. The journey is long enough that people stay 3 nights and do very little.
Koh Lipe in a nutshell
1,756,000+ stops across Thailand have been planned on Stippl, and this is what they show.
Koh Lipe is the last Thai island before Malaysia, and almost everything about it follows from how far out it sits. There are no roads and no cars, so you walk, and the reef at the southern end of Sunrise Beach is reachable straight from the sand, which is the thing people come back talking about. Koh Adang is a short longtail across, with the Chado Cliff climb above it looking back at the island. Most travellers give it 3 nights on Stippl.
Nobody reaches Koh Lipe by accident, and the trips that include it show it. A trip carrying Koh Lipe runs 30 days on Stippl, well past the three weeks a Thailand trip usually runs to. Getting here is a speedboat from Pak Bara or a ferry across from Langkawi, so it takes a day at each end, and that is the filter on who turns up.
Three or four nights, which is longer than most Thai islands justify and about right for this one. Snorkel off Sunrise Beach before breakfast, take the longtail over to Koh Adang for emptier sand and a reef close in, and climb Chado Cliff, which is about forty-five minutes with fixed ropes near the top. Buy the boat circuit of the Rawi and Adang sites off Walking Street. Come between November and April, because the island thins out sharply from June, and bring cash, because card acceptance is patchy all year.

The island sits inside a marine park, with a reef swimmable from Sunrise Beach and boat sites around Koh Adang and Rawi among Thailand's best.
Travellers crossing to Malaysia
The Langkawi ferry makes Koh Lipe a border post with a beach, and the natural last or first stop of an Andaman run.
Quiet, but not rustic, people
No roads, but also proper restaurants, dive schools, yoga and wifi, which is a rarer combination than it sounds.
Slow travellers
The journey is long enough that 3 nights is the norm and three or four the minimum that repays it, and the island rewards doing very little.
Couples
Koh Lipe is a couples-and-sunsets island rather than a party one, and the nightlife is tame by Thai island standards.
Maybe not for you: anyone on a tight two-week loop, since the transfer eats a day at each end; party travellers, because Phi Phi and Phangan do it properly; budget travellers expecting mainland prices; and anyone travelling June to October, when boats thin out and the island half-shuts.
Dry season
November to April
Calm sea, the clearest water, every route running and every business open. Also the expensive and busy window, sharply so from December to February.
Southwest monsoon
May to October
Rain, swell and a thinning island: some resorts and restaurants close for the season, the ferry schedules shrink and cancellations rise.

Photo by Visions of Domino via WikimediaSnorkelling off Sunrise Beach
Swim out to the reef at the southern end of Sunrise Beach, reachable from the sand, with anemones, clownfish and parrotfish and no boat or tour required. The single most repeated tip on the island, and free.
The Koh Adang day trip
Take the longtail from the north end of Sunrise, about €3, to the big island opposite: emptier beaches, the ranger station and the reef close to shore. Bring water and food; there is a ranger canteen and nothing else.
The Chado Cliff viewpoint
Climb above Koh Adang looking back over Koh Lipe, about forty-five minutes to the top past three viewpoints, with fixed ropes near the top. Steep, and not a flip-flop walk.
A snorkelling circuit of the marine park
Take the boat day to the Rawi and Adang sites the island's reputation rests on, sold from every desk on Walking Street for about €15 to €25. The morning boats have the calmer water.
The Monday Trash Hero clean-up
Join the longtail to an uninhabited island in the park, two hours of collecting with fifty-odd others and lunch afterwards, every Monday and free. The one activity here that is not a transaction.
Sunset from the west
Walk to Sunset Beach and the small bays beside it at the end of the day, a nightly event on the island rather than an occasional one. Free, and the plankton glows on the dark beaches after.
Walking Street
Pedestrian spine, cheapest beds
The lane crossing the island between Pattaya and Sunrise: restaurants, dive shops, tour desks and the cheapest rooms, with no beach and the most noise. For budget travellers and divers who want the shops at the door.
Everything on foot and the lowest prices, and the noisiest address on the island.
Pattaya Beach
Arrival sand, fire shows
The south beach where the boats land and the immigration office sits, with the island's modest nightlife and fire shows in the evening. For first visits and anyone who wants the busiest sand and the convenience.
The boats and the bars at the door, and the most crowded beach.
Sunrise Beach
Long, quiet, reef to swim to
The long east-coast beach facing Koh Adang, quieter, with the best bungalows and a reef at the southern end you swim to from the sand. For couples and snorkellers who want the water more than the strip.
A reef off the beach and calm, and a ten-minute walk to the restaurants.
Sunset Beach
Small, rocky, sunset bars
The smallest and quietest of the three in the north-west, rocky at the edges, with sunset bars and little else. For a couple who wants nobody else, and for everyone else a walk rather than a base.
Sunset and solitude, and the walk to everything.
See every Koh Lipe neighbourhood on one map
Save the areas you like and Stippl plots your days so you're not crossing the city twice.
Stay on Sunrise Beach for a first visit: it has the best bungalows, calmer water and a reef you swim to from the sand, with Walking Street ten minutes away for dinner. Most people give Koh Lipe 3 nights on Stippl. Book well ahead for December to February; the marine park caps the supply, and a week out you will struggle to find anything both affordable and well reviewed.
Walking Street
Hostels and the cheapest rooms on the island, dorms €10 to €18 and fan doubles €25 to €45, with no beach.
Pattaya Beach
Bungalow resorts and beachfront hotels above the boat landing, €50 to €150, with fire shows in the evening.
Sunrise Beach
The best bungalow resorts and a few upmarket places, €60 to €200, quieter after dark.
Sunset Beach
A handful of simple bungalows and one or two resorts, €35 to €120, for a couple who wants nobody else.

Hot-and-sour chicken soup

The beach is the village
The island is that small: Han Talay Monastery sits in the middle of it with monks in daily residence, and the walk between beaches passes through it, so a shirt on.
The Urak Lawoi were here first
The sea-nomad community is the island's original population and still lives at the north end; it is a neighbourhood, not a heritage display.
The marine park is enforced
This is protected reef: the park fee is checked, the shore reef at Sunrise sits shallow enough to touch at low tide, and touching it is the offence.
The clean-up is a culture
The dive shops run the region's reef and beach cleans and expect guests to join the habit: refill bottles, no plastic straws, reef-safe sunscreen.

Koh Lipe has no pier at all. Boats work off a floating platform, and in rough weather arrivals are diverted to the opposite side of the island.
The Chado Cliff hike is on a different island from the view. You climb Koh Adang to look back at Koh Lipe, and the three beaches and the reef read like a map from the top.
Marine-park rules prohibit permanent structures on the island. Koh Lipe sits inside Tarutao National Marine Park, and the rule is why the skyline stayed low even as Walking Street filled up.
Koh Lipe is Thailand's southernmost inhabited island. It is a short hop from the Malaysian border, which is why it works as both the end of the Andaman chain and a border crossing to Langkawi.
The island was home to the Urak Lawoi sea nomads before the tourists came. They remain a resident community rather than a historical footnote, with their own village on the east side of the island.
There are no roads, no cars and no airport on Koh Lipe. Three beaches are linked by a pedestrian spine, and the journey from Bangkok is a flight, a van and a boat.
There is no pier
Boats work off a floating platform and you wade ashore or transfer by longtail, which is why landings move to Sunrise Beach when Pattaya Beach is rough. Wet-able shoes and a soft bag.
Malaysia means immigration
On the Langkawi boat the operator collects the passports and returns them at the office on Pattaya Beach; there is no fee beyond the park entry. The direct route stops in the low season.
From Bangkok: plane, van, boat
Fly to Hat Yai, then the van to Pak Bara and the speedboat, about €45 for the last two legs. There is no through-transport worth the name; buy the outbound ferry on the island.
How long to stay
Most people give Koh Lipe 3 nights on Stippl: the house reef, one marine-park boat day and Koh Adang. The island walks end to end in fifteen minutes.
The crossing is the risk
Lipe is reached only by small fast boat across open water, and from May to October the swell makes that genuinely rough. Sit at the back and take the morning boat.
A clinic, not a hospital
The island has small private clinics with 24-hour cover, IV rehydration and trauma first aid; anything serious is an evacuation to the mainland by boat in daylight. Travel insurance matters more than the beach suggests.
It takes a day at each end, by speedboat from Pak Bara or ferry from Langkawi, so it only works on a long trip. Travellers leave 86 days between planning a Koh Lipe stop on Stippl and arriving. Lay those two travel days into the route in Stippl, then ask people who made the trip, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism.
Yes, and that is a good part of the appeal. There are no roads and no cars, so the island is crossed on foot in about twenty minutes, and motorbike taxis with a bench on the back carry anything you would rather not. Walking Street links the two main beaches and is where the boat trips are sold.
Good enough to do without a boat. A reef sits at the southern end of Sunrise Beach within swimming distance of the sand, with anemones, clownfish and parrotfish on it. The boat circuits out to the Rawi and Adang sites are what the island's reputation actually rests on, and every desk on Walking Street sells them.
Very few: only 16.3% of Koh Lipe stops planned on Stippl are a single night. That follows from the journey, since a travel day at each end makes a one-night stop mostly boat. Three or four nights is what the island tends to get from the people who come.
It thins out sharply from June to October rather than shutting outright. 73.8% of the trips carrying Koh Lipe on Stippl start in the high season, which runs November to April, and the boats from Pak Bara and Langkawi are the first thing to reduce when it ends.
More than you expect. Card acceptance is patchy, there are few machines on the island, and everything from the park fee to the boat trips is easier in notes. Prices sit above the mainland as well, because every crate of everything arrives here by boat.
Every guide is written by the Stippl editors and checked against the trips our travellers actually plan. Spotted something out of date? Let us know.
