Koh Lipe: what to expect

1,756,000+ stops across Thailand have been planned on Stippl, and this is what they show.

Koh Lipe is the last Thai island before Malaysia, and almost everything about it follows from how far out it sits. There are no roads and no cars, so you walk, and the reef at the southern end of Sunrise Beach is reachable straight from the sand, which is the thing people come back talking about. Koh Adang is a short longtail across, with the Chado Cliff climb above it looking back at the island. Most travellers give it 3 nights on Stippl.

Nobody reaches Koh Lipe by accident, and the trips that include it show it. A trip carrying Koh Lipe runs 30 days on Stippl, well past the three weeks a Thailand trip usually runs to. Getting here is a speedboat from Pak Bara or a ferry across from Langkawi, so it takes a day at each end, and that is the filter on who turns up.

Three or four nights, which is longer than most Thai islands justify and about right for this one. Snorkel off Sunrise Beach before breakfast, take the longtail over to Koh Adang for emptier sand and a reef close in, and climb Chado Cliff, which is about forty-five minutes with fixed ropes near the top. Buy the boat circuit of the Rawi and Adang sites off Walking Street. Come between November and April, because the island thins out sharply from June, and bring cash, because card acceptance is patchy all year.

Per chi è Koh Lipe

Snorkellers and divers

the island sits inside a marine park, with a reef swimmable from the south end of Sunrise Beach and boat sites around Koh Adang and Rawi that our sources rate among Thailand's best

Crossing to or from Malaysia

the Langkawi ferry makes Koh Lipe a border post with a beach, and it is the natural last or first stop of an Andaman run

Quiet, but not rustic

no roads, but also proper restaurants, dive schools, yoga and wifi

Slow travellers

the journey is long enough that three or four nights is the minimum that repays it, and the island rewards doing very little

Couples

repeatedly framed as a couples-and-sunsets island rather than a party one, with the nightlife described as tame by Thai island standards

Maybe not for you: anyone on a tight two-week loop (the transfer eats a day at each end), party travellers (Phi Phi and Phangan do it properly), budget travellers expecting mainland prices, and anyone travelling June–October, when boats thin out and part of the island shuts

Dry / northeast monsoon

Nov–Apr

calm sea, clearest water, every route running, every business open. Also the expensive and busy window, sharply so from December to February

Southwest monsoon

May–Oct

rain, swell and a thinning island: some resorts and restaurants close for the season, ferry schedules shrink and cancellations rise

  • The Koh Lipe planning rule: the season decides your route, not just your weather. Elsewhere a wet month costs you an afternoon; here it can cost you the direct crossing and add a mainland transfer and a night
  • Snorkelling stays worthwhile deeper into the wet season than boat access does, because the reef off Sunrise Beach is swimmable from shore
  • Low-season temperatures average around 25 °C, cooler than the dry-season figures
  • Every Monday, 10:00, the Trash Hero beach clean-up. Volunteers meet at the Walking Street entrance on Pattaya Beach and take longtails to a nearby island; free, no sign-up, boats leave just after ten and do not wait. Roughly two hours of collecting, lunch included

01

Snorkelling straight off Sunrise Beach

a reef at the southern end reachable from the sand, with anemones, clownfish and parrotfish, and no boat or tour required. The single most repeated recommendation in our sources

02

The Koh Adang day trip

a 100-baht longtail from the north end of Sunrise to the big island opposite: emptier beaches, the ranger station, and the reef close to shore

03

The Chado Cliff viewpoint

the climb above Koh Adang looking back over Koh Lipe, about 45 minutes to the top past three viewpoints. Steep, with fixed ropes near the top, and genuinely not a flip-flop walk

04

A boat snorkelling circuit of the marine park

the Rawi and Adang sites are what the island's reputation rests on, sold from every desk on Walking Street at 550–950 THB

05

The Monday Trash Hero clean-up

a longtail to an uninhabited island in the park, two hours of collecting with fifty-odd others, lunch afterwards. The one activity here that is not a transaction

06

Sunset from the west

Sunset Beach and the small bays beside it; our sources are unanimous that this is a nightly event rather than an occasional one

NeighbourhoodWhat it's likeWhy visit

Walking Street

budget travellers

The pedestrian spine crossing the island between Pattaya and Sunrise: restaurants, dive shops, tour desks, the cheapest beds. No beach, and it is the noisiest address

Why:

Every restaurant, dive shop and tour desk on the island's one pedestrian spine.

Pattaya Beach (south)

first visits

The arrival beach: boats land here, the immigration office sits here, and the island's modest nightlife and fire shows are here. Busiest sand, most convenient

Why:

Where the boats land, plus the island's fire shows and modest nightlife.

Sunrise Beach (east)

couples

The long east-coast beach, quieter, with the island's best bungalow stock and a reef at its southern end you can swim to. Faces Koh Adang

Why:

A reef you can swim to straight from the sand, at the beach's southern end.

Sunset Beach (north-west)

sunsets, solitude

Small, rocky-edged and the quietest of the three; sunset bars and little else. A walk, not a base, for most

Why:

The quietest of the three beaches, with sunset bars and little else.

North Point, Bulow, Sanom, Secret

escaping the three main beaches

The minor beaches at the edges, reached on foot in ten to twenty minutes and usually near-empty

Why:

Near-empty minor beaches, a short walk from the three main ones.

Da sapere prima di partire

Koh Lipe customs and what not to do

The etiquette is national

temple dress, respect for the monarchy, the wai greeting, and care with feet and heads

The beach is the village

the island is that small. Han Talay Monastery sits in the middle of it, with monks in daily residence, and the walk between beaches passes it

The Urak Lawoi were here first

the sea-nomad community is the island's original population, not a heritage display; our own data records them and our sources do not

The marine park is enforced

on the water: this is protected reef, and the sources that recommend it also lead the region's clean-up culture

  • Carry your 200-baht park ticket; it is checked
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, the reef is the reason the island exists as a destination
  • Wear shoes for the Chado Cliff climb
  • Bring cash

No

  • Don't stand on or touch coral, the shore reef at Sunrise sits shallow enough to reach at low tide
  • Don't assume card payment works
  • Don't book the far beach if you are arriving in rough weather with heavy bags
  • Don't plan a June–October Langkawi crossing without checking the route first

Curiosità

Curiosità su Koh Lipe

01

The island has no pier. Boats work off a floating platform, and in rough weather arrivals are diverted to the opposite side of the island

02

The Chado Cliff hike is on a different island from the view it gives you: you climb Koh Adang to look back at Koh Lipe

03

Marine-park rules formally prohibit permanent structures on the island, which is why its skyline stayed low

04

Weekly volunteer beach clean-ups have run here long enough to be a fixture of the island's calendar rather than an event

Da chi vive lì

Consigli locali per Koh Lipe

There is no pier.

Boats work off a floating platform and passengers wade or transfer by longtail, which is why landings move to Sunrise Beach when Pattaya is rough

Malaysia means immigration

there is an immigration step: the operator collects passports and returns them at the office on Pattaya Beach. No fee beyond the park ticket

Buy the ferry on the island

worth knowing for the outbound leg if your dates are flexible

From Bangkok: plane, van, boat

the routing is a flight to Hat Yai, then a van, then a boat, and there is no through-transport worth the name

The crossing is the risk

not the island. Koh Lipe is reached only by small fast boat across open water, and from May to October swell makes that genuinely rough; life jackets are advised on small boats and cancellations rise August to October

A clinic, not a hospital

The island has small private clinics offering 24-hour cover, IV rehydration and trauma first aid, and anything serious is an evacuation by boat to Satun or Hat Yai

Everything else

Domande frequenti su Koh Lipe

It takes a day at each end, by speedboat from Pak Bara or ferry from Langkawi, so it only works on a long trip. Travellers leave 86 days between planning a Koh Lipe stop on Stippl and arriving. Lay those two travel days into the route in Stippl, then ask people who made the trip, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism.

Yes, and that is a good part of the appeal. There are no roads and no cars, so the island is crossed on foot in about twenty minutes, and motorbike taxis with a bench on the back carry anything you would rather not. Walking Street links the two main beaches and is where the boat trips are sold.

Good enough to do without a boat. A reef sits at the southern end of Sunrise Beach within swimming distance of the sand, with anemones, clownfish and parrotfish on it. The boat circuits out to the Rawi and Adang sites are what the island's reputation actually rests on, and every desk on Walking Street sells them.

Very few: only 16.3% of Koh Lipe stops planned on Stippl are a single night. That follows from the journey, since a travel day at each end makes a one-night stop mostly boat. Three or four nights is what the island tends to get from the people who come.

It thins out sharply from June to October rather than shutting outright. 73.8% of the trips carrying Koh Lipe on Stippl start in the high season, which runs November to April, and the boats from Pak Bara and Langkawi are the first thing to reduce when it ends.

More than you expect. Card acceptance is patchy, there are few machines on the island, and everything from the park fee to the boat trips is easier in notes. Prices sit above the mainland as well, because every crate of everything arrives here by boat.

Every guide is written by the Stippl editors and checked against the trips our travellers actually plan. Spotted something out of date? Let us know.
