Ao Nang is where most people sleep when they come to Krabi, and the boat pier is the reason why. The strip itself is restaurants, dive shops and a Muay Thai card most nights, and what you actually came for leaves from the beach: the four-island longtail run past Chicken Island, Tup and Poda, and the ten-minute crossing to Railay and Ton Sai. Phra Nang Cave beach at eight in the morning is the hour worth an alarm. Most travellers give Ao Nang 3 nights on Stippl.
Ao Nang sits in the middle of routes, and almost nobody opens or closes a trip in it. Under three in a hundred Ao Nang stops planned on Stippl open a trip, and only 14.59% are a single night. People arrive with boat days already in mind and use the town as somewhere to come back to at the end of each of them.
Three nights is the length that works, and the tide table decides two of the days. Give one to the four islands out of Nopparat Thara, where a sandbar surfaces at low tide and you walk between Tup and Chicken Island. Give another to Railay: the viewpoint scramble, the Blue Lagoon when it is high and dry, and Phra Nang Cave with its shrine of carved wooden phalluses left by fishermen. Kayak the mangroves if you want the cliffs without a boatload of other people, and keep the sunset free: the karst stacks offshore are what the strip stops for.

southern Thailand has a large Muslim population. Dress on the beach is resort-normal, but in Krabi Town and the villages it is not
Phra Nang shrine is a shrine
the wooden phalluses there are offerings, not a joke. Fishermen leave them for the sea spirit the cave is dedicated

it is a protected area, not a public beach

- Agree the price of seafood by weight before it goes on the grill.
- Take the first boat of the day if you want Railay or Phra Nang without crowds.
- Walk inland five minutes before booking a room.
Don't
- Don't swim off a red flag. The monsoon sea here has dangerous currents and the flags are not decorative.
- Don't count on a boat after 18:00.
- Don't assume a beach tour will run in the monsoon; cancellations are the norm, not the exception.

Railay boats leave mid-beach
from the Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club, which is the busiest departure point and therefore the one with the shortest wait. You buy a ticket, then wait for a skipper to call "Railay"
Boarding means wet feet
you walk out over slippery rock pools at low tide, wherever you book. Shoes you can get wet, and no rolling suitcase

A late flight into Krabi and a Railay bed means chartering a private longtail

Frequently asked questions about Ao Nang
Ao Nang if you want restaurants, a pier and a road out; Railay if you want the cliffs and can live with arriving by boat. Lay both out in Stippl and look at which one your day trips actually leave from. Then ask people who have done each, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism or the Facebook groups.
It is the default one. 1.77% of every Thai stop planned on Stippl is in Ao Nang, and the reasons are all logistical: the longtail pier is on the beach, Krabi Town is twenty minutes away by songthaew, and Railay is a ten-minute crossing.
By longtail from the eastern end of the beach, in about ten minutes, and there is no other way. The boats leave once they have enough passengers rather than to a timetable, so allow slack on any day with a ferry or a flight later on. The last ones back run earlier than people expect.
Early morning and late afternoon. Phra Nang Cave beach has vertical karst on three sides and about an hour of quiet before the first day-trip boats land, and the islands empty again after four. 2.33% of Ao Nang stops planned on Stippl carry no night at all, so the crowd is largely arriving by boat.
Yes, and this is one of the easiest places in the world to start. Schools on Railay and Ton Sai take complete beginners out the same day on bolted limestone, with the beach walls kept for exactly that. The transfer and the boat across are usually part of the course rather than an extra.
For a lot of people, yes: 23.35% of Ao Nang stops planned on Stippl are added within a month of arriving. That fits how the town gets used, since travellers already working their way along the Andaman coast decide to give Krabi a few more days once they are there.
