Ao Nang is where most people sleep when they come to Krabi, and the boat pier is the reason why. The strip itself is restaurants, dive shops and a Muay Thai card most nights, and what you actually came for leaves from the beach: the four-island longtail run past Chicken Island, Tup and Poda, and the ten-minute crossing to Railay and Ton Sai. Phra Nang Cave beach at eight in the morning is the hour worth an alarm. Most travellers give Ao Nang 3 nights on Stippl.
Ao Nang sits in the middle of routes, and almost nobody opens or closes a trip in it. Under three in a hundred Ao Nang stops planned on Stippl open a trip, and only 14.59% are a single night. People arrive with boat days already in mind and use the town as somewhere to come back to at the end of each of them.
Three nights is the length that works, and the tide table decides two of the days. Give one to the four islands out of Nopparat Thara, where a sandbar surfaces at low tide and you walk between Tup and Chicken Island. Give another to Railay: the viewpoint scramble, the Blue Lagoon when it is high and dry, and Phra Nang Cave with its shrine of carved wooden phalluses left by fishermen. Kayak the mangroves if you want the cliffs without a boatload of other people, and keep the sunset free: the karst stacks offshore are what the strip stops for.

The best time to visit Ao Nang
Dry season
late December to March
Calm sea, reliable boats, full resorts and the highest prices; December to February is the core of it.
Hot pre-monsoon
March and April
Still dry enough to swim and boat, but hot, and April brings the first real rain.
Southwest monsoon
May to October
Sixteen to twenty-two rain days a month, rough sea, cancelled boat trips and dangerous currents. October is the wettest month.
Shoulder
November
The rains ease and the crowds have not arrived: the best value of the year if you accept some risk.
- The boats decide the trip, and from May to October they cancel. The four-islands tour, Hong Island and Phi Phi all leave from this beach, so a wet-season week here is a beach week, not an island one.
- Ao Nang is planned about 75 days ahead on Stippl, and nearly a quarter of its plans are made inside a month. It is the beach people pick from Krabi Town, which works outside the December to February peak.
- Maya Bay closes from 1 August to 30 September. The Phi Phi day trip still sails from here in those months, but it lands at Pileh Lagoon and the Bidas instead.

Things to do in Ao Nang

Take the first longtail to the beach with vertical karst on three sides and the spirit shrine full of carved wooden phalluses left by fishermen, about €3 each way. An hour of quiet before the day-trip boats arrive.
The four-island longtail tour
Take the shared boat to Chicken Island, Tup, Poda and Phra Nang with lunch on the sand, about €12, and walk the sandbar between Tup and Chicken Island at low tide. Book it at any desk on the strip the night before.
Climbing at Railay or Tonsai
Learn on the bolted limestone across the headland: the schools run half-day beginner sessions for about €30, gear included, and take you out the same day. The boat to Railay is fifteen minutes from the beach.
Kayaking the mangroves
Paddle the karst inlets and mangrove channels at Ao Thalane, quieter than the boat tours and the way to see the cliffs from the water under your own power. About €25 for a half day with the transfer.
Muay Thai on the strip
Watch a fight card at the Ao Nang stadium, which runs regular nights for a town this size, about €20 for a standard seat. Fights start around nine and the foreign bout is last.
The sunset from the beach
Stop where the whole strip stops, on the sand at the end of the day, when the karst stacks offshore turn orange. Free, and the beach bars at the western end have the clearest line.

Park beach, long and shallow
The quieter beach west of the strip inside the national park, with fewer resorts, a long shallow shore and the pier the island boats leave from. For families and couples who want the strip nearby but not around them.

Railay and Ton Sai
Across the water, boat only
The peninsula ten minutes away by longtail: Railay for the postcard beaches and climbing, Ton Sai for the cheap climbers' scene, neither reachable by road. For climbers and for people who want the cliffs at breakfast.

Where to stay in Ao Nang
Stay on the Ao Nang strip for a first visit: the island boats, the food and the tour desks are all within a five-minute walk, and nothing needs arranging. Most people give Ao Nang 3 nights on Stippl, enough for two island days and a Railay afternoon. A room in the back streets saves real money over the beachfront, and the beach is public either way.

Ao Nang customs and what not to do
Krabi is partly Muslim
Dress on the beach is resort-normal, but five minutes inland, in Krabi Town and in the villages behind the strip, a shirt and covered knees are what is expected.
Phra Nang shrine is a shrine
The wooden phalluses in the cave are offerings to the sea spirit, left by fishermen for safe passage; they are not a joke and not a photo prop.
Hat Noppharat is a park
The beach west of Ao Nang is a protected area, not a public beach: no camping, no drones without a permit, and the rangers do walk it.
Seafood is sold by weight
At the beachfront grills the fish is weighed in front of you; agree the price per kilo before it goes on the fire, not after.

Fun facts about Ao Nang
The garland over a longtail's engine is not decoration. It is an offering to the boat's spirit, and every working longtail on the Krabi coast carries one.
Railay is ten minutes from Ao Nang and has no road at all. The karst wall behind it cuts it off from the mainland, so the trivial distance is still a boat ride.
Krabi province holds over 150 dive sites. Visibility commonly exceeds 20 metres, and most of the sites are day trips from the Ao Nang pier rather than liveaboards.
Krabi's hot springs are natural bathtubs hollowed in smooth rock. They are fed at 35 to 42 degrees from thermal chambers, and so many people came that artificial pools were built alongside.
Ao Nang is the hub of Thailand's best public transport on water. The longtail network from this beach reaches Railay, Phra Nang and the four islands, which is the reason to sleep here.
Local tips for Ao Nang
Railay boats leave mid-beach
Buy at the Longtail Boat Service Club on the beach, the busiest point and so the shortest wait, about €3 each way; the boat leaves with eight aboard. Use the club, not the sellers.
Boarding means wet feet
You walk out over slippery rock at low tide wherever you book. Shoes you can get wet, a dry bag, and no rolling suitcase.
No scheduled boat after six
A late flight into Krabi and a Railay bed means chartering a private longtail for about €25. Sleep in Ao Nang and cross in the morning instead.
Nothing here needs a scooter
The strip is walkable end to end and everything else is a boat. The airport shuttle ticket is bought inside the terminal at the fixed fare, about €4.

Judge a boat day by the sea
The Andaman is warm all year and rough for half of it, and longtails have capsized here in daylight on organised trips. From May to October look at the swell, not the booking.
Ao Nang questions, answered
Ao Nang if you want restaurants, a pier and a road out; Railay if you want the cliffs and can live with arriving by boat. Lay both out in Stippl and look at which one your day trips actually leave from. Then ask people who have done each, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism or the Facebook groups.
It is the default one. 1.77% of every Thai stop planned on Stippl is in Ao Nang, and the reasons are all logistical: the longtail pier is on the beach, Krabi Town is twenty minutes away by songthaew, and Railay is a ten-minute crossing.
By longtail from the eastern end of the beach, in about ten minutes, and there is no other way. The boats leave once they have enough passengers rather than to a timetable, so allow slack on any day with a ferry or a flight later on. The last ones back run earlier than people expect.
Early morning and late afternoon. Phra Nang Cave beach has vertical karst on three sides and about an hour of quiet before the first day-trip boats land, and the islands empty again after four. 2.33% of Ao Nang stops planned on Stippl carry no night at all, so the crowd is largely arriving by boat.
Yes, and this is one of the easiest places in the world to start. Schools on Railay and Ton Sai take complete beginners out the same day on bolted limestone, with the beach walls kept for exactly that. The transfer and the boat across are usually part of the course rather than an extra.
For a lot of people, yes: 23.35% of Ao Nang stops planned on Stippl are added within a month of arriving. That fits how the town gets used, since travellers already working their way along the Andaman coast decide to give Krabi a few more days once they are there.
