Labuan Bajo is a harbour town on the western tip of Flores, and it exists in its present form because of Komodo National Park. Day boats run Padar's three-bay viewpoint, the dragons on Rinca, Pink Beach and Manta Point. Liveaboards go further out to Crystal Rock and Batu Bolong, which the day boats cannot reach. The currents that make the water cold make it rich, so mantas, whale sharks and pygmy seahorses turn up close together.
Labuan Bajo sits on the longest itineraries in Indonesia. Trips that reach it carry more Indonesian stops than trips to anywhere else in the country, close to double the national picture, and more than four in ten of the stops here are a single night. Almost nobody starts a trip in Labuan Bajo, and its strongest partners are Bajawa and Ruteng, the Flores overland towns nobody reaches any other way.
So treat the town as the door and put the nights on the boat. 2 nights ashore is what most travellers give it, and a two-to-five-day liveaboard is what gets you the sites worth the flight. Sunset is from Bukit Cinta above town. Avoid December to March, when the seas are rough and the boats stop, and expect port prices, because they rose with the park.

When to go to Labuan Bajo
- April to November is our own data's window and it is about the sea rather than the land. Calmer water, reliable sun, and boats that run
- July and August are named for the clearest underwater visibility and are also the busiest and dearest. September is the shoulder that gets both
- 40.8% of our Labuan Bajo trips start in July–September against 7.4% in November and December
- Flores is Catholic-majority, unlike Muslim Lombok or Hindu Bali, and Christmas and Easter are the significant dates. Nyepi does not apply and neither does the Bali levy
- The national calendar: Ramadan, Idul Fitri, Independence Day, applies as elsewhere in Indonesia, with less local force than in Java
- Peak booking pressure is July–August rather than a festival, and our own data says to book liveaboards in advance for it

Labuan Bajo customs and what not to do
Flores is Catholic
not Bali, not Lombok. No canang sari, no temple sarongs, no Nyepi, no Bali levy. Churches rather than temples, and Sunday matters
The rangers are not advisory
in the national park, their instructions bind. Komodo dragons are large predatory animals; stay with your guide, keep the stated distance, and do not separate from the group
Do not touch or feed anything
on land or underwater. The park is a conservation area first
The town is a working port
and the harbour front is a workplace

Book the boat first, because the town is only the gateway. Travellers planning Labuan Bajo on Stippl book about 80 days out, and the liveaboards go before the day trips do. Put a night either side of the boat into Stippl and the flight from Bali around them.
Two nights around a day trip, three with a liveaboard. 2 nights is the normal stay in the Labuan Bajo stops planned on Stippl. The town itself is a harbour, a hill of restaurants and a sunset, and it takes one evening to see properly.
It is the gateway rather than the destination, and the numbers say so: 43.53% of Labuan Bajo stops planned on Stippl are a single night, one of the highest shares in Indonesia. You come for Komodo. The town is where the boats leave from, and that is its job.
Day trips cover the headline stops: Padar, Pink Beach, a dragon walk and Manta Point. Liveaboards reach Crystal Rock and Batu Bolong, which the day boats cannot, and they put you on the water at dawn. If diving is the reason you came, take the liveaboard and do not think twice.
Rinca is the usual recommendation and it is closer than Komodo Island, so it fits a day trip better. Both are walked with a ranger, which is not optional. Sightings are near certain around the ranger stations and less so on the longer trails, and morning beats the middle of the day.
Yes, from eastern Flores, and it is a real route rather than a theoretical one: Bajawa and Ruteng are the two stops most often planned alongside it. The road is slow, mountainous and spectacular, and it takes two or three days from Maumere. Most people fly, and the drivers do not regret it.
