Lombok is a different culture from Bali with a 3,726-metre volcano in the middle, and the trek to Rinjani's crater rim is why people come. A real surf coast in the south, and no crowds at the waterfalls.

Lombok: what to expect

What follows sits on 688,000+ stops planned in Indonesia on Stippl.

Lombok is the island east of Bali, Sasak and Muslim rather than Hindu, and it is a different culture rather than a quieter version of the same one. Mount Rinjani stands at 3,726 metres and is trekked over two to four days from Senaru or Sembalun, past a crater lake and hot springs. Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep fall a short walk apart in the north, Selong Belanak is where people learn to surf, and Tetebatu's paddy paths run between hamlets on Rinjani's southern slopes.

Lombok holds people longer than anywhere else in Indonesia. More than a quarter of the stops planned here run five nights or more, against four in a hundred on Nusa Penida, and no other Indonesian destination we measure comes close. Lombok also opens very few of the trips it appears on and closes roughly one in five, so it is the eastern end of a Bali trip rather than the start of its own.

Plan on 3 nights minimum, and a week if you have one. The island is eighty kilometres across with slow roads and four bases that are not interchangeable: Senggigi on the west coast, Kuta on the south, Tetebatu inland, Senaru and Sembalun for the mountain. Avoid January to March, when Rinjani closes completely and the island is at its wettest, and skip Lombok altogether if you want Bali's infrastructure.

Who Lombok is for

Trekkers

Rinjani is the reason a large share of visitors come, and there is nothing comparable on Bali.

Surfers

The south coast from Selong Belanak to Gerupuk is a genuine surf region with breaks for every level.

Anyone Bali wore out

Lombok's stops run longer than any other Indonesian destination's on Stippl, at 3 nights typical, which says something about the pace.

Digital nomads

Kuta Lombok has a small but real remote-work scene, enough for a fortnight without feeling cut off.

Waterfall and village walkers

Senaru's falls and Tetebatu's rice villages, both with guides and neither with crowds.

Maybe not for you: anyone who wants Bali's infrastructure, since English is thinner and the roads slower; anyone travelling January to March, when the mountain is shut; anyone expecting Hindu Bali, because this is Muslim Sasak Lombok; and anyone on three days, since the bases are hours apart.

Dry season

May to September

Far drier than Bali's and the most under-reported fact about the island: August is almost rainless. The surf coast and the waterfalls both work, and Rinjani is open.

The turn

April, and October

Abrupt: the rain drops by two-thirds from April to May, a much sharper transition than Bali's, and returns through October.

Wet season

November to March

Sharp and real, and the months Rinjani is shut; the south-coast surf still runs, and the trails are mud.

  • Mount Rinjani is closed to all hiking from 1 January to 31 March, every year, and the summit trail stays shut on both sides of it. The trek most people come for is an April to December booking, and the huts at the rim go in July and August.
  • MotoGP at Mandalika fills the south coast in October. The circuit weekend prices every room from Kuta Lombok to Selong Belanak; check the year's dates before booking the surf beaches then.
  • Lombok is planned about 84 days ahead on Stippl, and September is its month. Stops here run longer than anywhere else in Indonesia, so the plan is made early and around the trek.
  • Ramadan and Idul Fitri are the calendar here, not Nyepi. Lombok is Muslim-majority and observes both fully; at Idul Fitri the island fills with returning families and the ferries book out.

Things to do in Lombok

01

Trekking Mount Rinjani

Climb two, three or four days from Senaru or Sembalun to the crater rim, the lake, the hot springs and, on the longer routes, the 3,726-metre summit, about €200 with a licensed operator. Permits through the e-Rinjani app; the season is April to December.

02

Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep

Walk to the two waterfalls a short distance apart near Senaru, the second reached by wading a river, about €2. An hour and a half, and the second fall is the one worth the wet feet.

03

Learning to surf at Selong Belanak

Take a lesson on the beginner beach thirty minutes west of Kuta Lombok, a long sand-bottom bay with warm water, about €12 an hour with the board from the schools on the sand.

04

Tanjung Aan's double bay

Swim on the one peninsula with calm water on one side and surf on the other, twenty minutes from Kuta. Free, and the hill at the end has the view; resort construction is changing the beach.

05

The rice villages at Tetebatu

Walk the paddy paths between hamlets on Rinjani's southern slopes with a local guide, about €15 for the morning, and see the monkey forest and the waterfalls beyond. The quiet Lombok most visitors miss.

06

Sasak village life

Visit a traditional village with its thatched lumbung rice barns and the weaving and pottery still made there, at Sade or Ende near Kuta, free with a small donation to the guide.

Area by area

The neighbourhoods of Lombok

NeighbourhoodWhat it's likeWhy visit

Kuta Lombok

Beach town, surf, white bays

A proper beach town on a string of white bays: surf, a growing nomad scene and the island's best beaches, with hostels to villas. For first visits and surfers; not Bali's Kuta.

Why:

The best beaches and the only traveller town, and a scooter for the bays.

Senggigi

Original resort strip, sunsets

The original resort strip facing Bali across the strait, quiet since the earthquake, with sunsets over Agung and the Gili boats and the airport road close. For convenience and for a resort at a low price.

Why:

Closest to the Gili boats and the sunset, and a strip past its peak.

Senaru

Rinjani trailhead, waterfalls

A village on Rinjani's northern flank: the trailhead and the two best waterfalls on the island fifteen minutes away, with homestays and trek lodges. For trekkers and for the night before the climb.

Why:

The trailhead and the falls, and nothing to do but rest.

Sembalun

High valley, the other trailhead

The high valley on Rinjani's eastern side: cool, agricultural, the easier ascent and a valley nobody visits otherwise, with homestays among the fields. For the Rinjani climb and for cool nights.

Why:

The easier route up, and a long road from everywhere.

Mandalika

Tourism zone, MotoGP circuit

The government's flagship tourism zone around the circuit, next to Kuta Lombok, with new resorts and a fast-changing coastline. For events and for a new resort with a pool.

Why:

New resorts and the circuit, and a coast still under construction.

Mataram

Provincial capital, transport hub

The provincial capital: the island's transport hub, the markets and the food, with city hotels. For a practical night and for eating; nobody comes here for the town.

Why:

The food and every bus, and a city with no beach.

Sleep well

Where to stay in Lombok

Stay in Kuta Lombok for a first visit: it has the deepest range on the island, from hostels to a real villa layer, and the best beaches within a short ride. Most people give Lombok 3 nights on Stippl per stop, and a week is best split with three more in Senaru for the mountain. Book the south coast well clear of the MotoGP weekend in October.

Kuta Lombok

Hostels with dorms €6 to €12, guesthouses with pools €25 to €60, and villas around the bays from €90.

Senggigi

The older resort hotels and beachfront villas, €30 to €120, quiet since the earthquake and priced for it.

Senaru

Homestays and trek lodges built for the night before and after Rinjani, €10 to €35 with meals.

Sembalun

Family homestays and plain guesthouses among the fields, €8 to €30, cool at night.

Mandalika

New resort hotels around the circuit, €60 to €200, with a fast-changing coastline outside.

Mataram

City hotels and business chains near the transport hub, €20 to €60, for a practical night.

Before you go

Lombok customs and what not to do

Sasak Lombok, not Hindu Bali

None of Bali's etiquette applies: no offerings, no temple sarongs, no Nyepi. What applies is modest dress away from the tourist beaches, Ramadan observance and the courtesies of Muslim Indonesia.

Cover up outside the beaches

Kuta Lombok and Senggigi are relaxed; the villages, the markets and the north are not, and the gap is wider than on Bali. Shoulders and knees, and no swimwear on a scooter.

Take a guide in the villages

At Tetebatu a guide is access rather than navigation: they get you into the weaving houses and the conversations you would otherwise walk past, for about €15 a half-day.

The 2018 quake is remembered

Much of the north was rebuilt after it and most families lost something; it is not a curiosity to raise casually, and the rebuilt mosques are the community's pride.

Do

  • Fly into Lombok airport if you are heading for the south; it is thirty minutes from Kuta Lombok
  • Book the Rinjani permit through e-Rinjani, and check the route quota
  • Budget four hours to cross the island, not two
  • Take a guide for the Tetebatu village walks

Don't

  • Plan Rinjani between January and March; it is closed
  • Confuse this with Bali's Kuta; they share a name and nothing else
  • Assume Balinese etiquette; this is a Muslim island
  • Try to see the island from one base in under a week

Trivia

Fun facts about Lombok

01

Mount Rinjani is Indonesia's second-highest volcano at 3,726 metres. The crater lake Segara Anak sits inside it with a smaller cone growing in the water, and treks run two to four days from Senaru or Sembalun.

02

Rinjani closes to all hiking for a quarter of every year. The mountain shuts from 1 January to 31 March for extreme weather and trail recovery, and reopened in 2026 with new safety rules.

03

Lombok's August averages about 7 mm of rain across two days. It is the driest month recorded anywhere in Indonesia, on an island that is measurably drier than Bali next door.

04

Lombok's airport is thirty minutes from the south-coast beaches. That is closer to its main tourist region than almost any airport in Indonesia, and it makes Kuta Lombok an easy first night.

05

Lombok hosts a MotoGP world-championship round. The Mandalika circuit on the south coast opened in 2021, and the race weekend in October fills every bed on the coast.

06

Lombok is Sasak and Muslim, not a quieter Bali. The culture is genuinely different, with its own language, weaving villages and mosques, and the island is about 80 km across.

Local tips for Lombok

The airport is in the south

Lombok International is thirty minutes from Kuta Lombok and an hour and a half from the Gili harbour at Bangsal, which is unusual and useful. A Grab to Kuta is about €10.

Three ways in from Bali

Fly, take the fast boat to Bangsal in the north-west, or the slow vehicle ferry to Lembar. The fast boats stop at the Gilis on the way and are the answer for a Gili-first plan.

You cannot base in one place

Kuta to Senaru is four hours; the south coast and the Rinjani trailheads are opposite ends of the island. Two bases, and a scooter or a driver between them; there is no public transport.

How long to stay

Most people give Lombok 3 nights on Stippl in any one base, and the island wants two: the south for the beaches, Senaru or Tetebatu for the mountain.

Rinjani is a serious mountain

People have died on it, and it reopened in 2026 with new safety protocols. A licensed operator, the e-Rinjani permit and the dry season are the conditions; it is also an active volcano.

The south coast has rips

Selong Belanak's gentleness is the exception on that coast, not the rule. Medical care outside Mataram is basic; anything serious means Mataram or a flight to Bali.

Everything else

Lombok questions, answered

Two bases at least, because the island is big and the roads are slow. Kuta Lombok for the south coast and the surf, Senaru or Sembalun for Rinjani, Tetebatu for the interior. Only 8.81% of trips including Lombok start here on Stippl, so plan the arrival from Bali into Stippl.

A week for two bases, ten days if Rinjani is on the list. Most people give Lombok 3 nights in the plans they build on Stippl, and travellers stay longer here than anywhere else in Indonesia. It is quieter, cheaper and harder work than Bali, in that order.

It is quieter, cheaper, far less developed and it has a volcano you can climb. It is also harder work: fewer drivers, worse roads and less that runs to time. Only 19.83% of Lombok stops planned on Stippl are a single night, which says the people who come commit to it.

From April to December, with a permit booked through the national park system and a licensed operator. The mountain closes between January and March for the rains and the closure is enforced. It is two or three days, it is genuinely hard, and the crater lake is why people do it.

No, and they are not remotely alike. Bali's Kuta is a dense commercial strip beside the airport; Kuta Lombok is a small surf town on an empty south coast with a string of bays around it. Booking sites confuse the two, so check the island before you confirm anything.

Fly into the airport in the south, take a fast boat from Bali to Bangsal in the north-west, or the slow car ferry to Lembar. Fly if you are heading for Kuta Lombok, because the airport is close to it. Take the fast boat if you are going to the Gilis or up to Senaru.
