Gili Trawangan is three kilometres by two of coral-fringed sand off north-west Lombok, and no engine is allowed on it. You walk, cycle the seven-kilometre ring track or take a cidomo horse cart, and that absence is the first thing anyone notices. Green and hawksbill turtles feed on the seagrass a short swim from the north and east shores, sunk wrecks and underwater sculptures do the work of reefs at Shark Point and Halik, and the west-side bars look across the strait to Mount Agung at sunset.
Gili Trawangan holds the fewest one-night stops in Indonesia, because the boat decides. Thirteen in a hundred stays here are a single night, the lowest in the country, and a crossing of two to three hours from Bali is what prices the overnight out. Travellers also settle on it late, 67 days ahead, the shortest lead time we measure in Indonesia.
The island works at 3 nights, and it matters which Gili you booked. Trawangan is the loud one, with resident DJs, boat parties and a strip that runs late, while the morning ferry makes Meno and Air half-day trips rather than commitments. All three dive the same sites, so the choice of base is social. Skip Trawangan if you want somewhere unspoilt, because the centre is built up and the waste problem is visible.

- Nyepi does not apply here in the Balinese form. The Gilis are administratively Lombok and majority-Muslim, and the island works normally in March. What does apply is Ramadan and Idul Fitri

- The Gilis are Sasak and Muslim in character despite the tourist strip, and the call to prayer runs across an island whose bars are open. Both publishers who mention it treat the coexistence as the island's defining oddity

Gili Trawangan customs and what not to do
A Muslim island, a bar strip
the coexistence is the etiquette question here. Away from the beach and the main lane, in the village, at the market, near the mosque, cover up and behave as you would anywhere in Muslim Indonesia. Beachwear belongs on the beach
The cidomo horses are contested
genuinely, and this is not smoothed over. There is a public campaign to ban the carts on welfare grounds and visitor complaints about the animals' condition; there is also a local cooperative welfare standard and an ongoing education programme run by the Gili Eco Trust with the drivers themselves. If it matters to you, walk or cycle, the island is small enough that nothing requires a cart
Take your rubbish with you
where you can. Waste handling on a small island with these visitor numbers is visibly strained and our sources name it
Do not touch the turtles
nor chase or ride them. They are habituated, which is not the same as tame
Ramadan is observed
expect daytime restraint away from the tourist strip and a different rhythm to the village

Fun facts about Gili Trawangan
Motorised vehicles are banned island-wide; transport is foot, bicycle and horse cart
"Gili" simply means "small island" in Sasak, so "the Gili Islands" is literally "the island islands"
The Gili Eco Trust maintains more than 180 Biorock artificial-reef structures around the three islands
The 2018 Lombok earthquake left more than a thousand people trapped on these islands and about 2,000 tourists were taken off by boat
All three Gilis dive the same sites, so the choice of island is a social decision rather than a technical one
Local tips for Gili Trawangan
Crossings and prices
From Bali the crossing is 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the port and the boat; from Lombok's Bangsal it is about thirty minutes. Prices run 300,000 IDR one-way from Sanur to 500,000–600,000 return from Bali with hotel transfers included
Late transfers, missed boats
The transfer, not the boat, is what makes people miss the boat. One publisher was collected nearly two hours late from Seminyak, missed the fast boat and arrived two hours behind schedule on the slow one. Build slack into a Bali-side pickup
One ferry each morning
The inter-island ferry runs once each morning and stops in the afternoon. First boats off Gili T around 09:30 and the last back no later than about 16:00, check at the harbour, because the times move. Miss it and you are chartering a private speedboat
Keep your entry ticket
You are issued an entry ticket on arrival at Gili Trawangan, and it is valid again on your return, keep it if you are day-tripping to Meno or Air.
Drug law is severe
Bars on this island openly advertise magic mushrooms, and Indonesian drug law carries four to twelve years' imprisonment for possession and five to fifteen years to life, with the death penalty available for trafficking quantities. There is no medical or recreational exception anywhere in Indonesia. International press has specifically noted a rise in drug cases in Bali and Gili Trawangan. The open advertising is not evidence of tolerance; it is evidence that the risk is being transferred to the buyer. our sources mention the mushroom bars as local colour and never once names the sentence
Active fault line
The island sits on an active fault and has been evacuated in living memory. The magnitude 6.9 Lombok earthquake of 5 August 2018 killed at least 98 people on the day and several hundred in total, left more than a thousand people trapped on the Gili Islands, and required the evacuation of about 2,000 tourists by boat in conditions witnesses described as chaotic. These islands are flat, low and have no high ground, which matters for a tsunami as well as a quake. Know where your accommodation's exit is and what the island's assembly points are

Technically, and it is a bad idea: up to three hours of boat each way for a few hours ashore. Only 12.95% of Gili Trawangan stops planned on Stippl are even a single night, so almost nobody treats it as a quick visit. Give it three and stop counting.
Trawangan for nightlife, choice and the widest range of places to stay. Gili Air for the middle ground, which is what most people actually want. Gili Meno for silence and very little else. All three dive the same sites, so this is a social decision rather than a diving one.
None at all. Feet, bicycles and horse carts, and it is the first thing you notice stepping off the boat. The island takes about two hours to walk around and under one to cycle, and the absence of engines is most of why people stay longer than they meant to.
No. Possession carries a long prison sentence in Indonesia, and the fact that bars advertise them openly changes nothing about the law. Indonesian drug penalties are among the harshest in the region and foreign nationals are not treated leniently. It is not a risk worth taking at all.
