Myvatn is a shallow volcanic lake ringed by an open-air geology lesson: pseudocraters, lava castles, a tuff ring, boiling mud and the live Krafla fissure zone on one paved 36-kilometre loop. Two nights if the beds allow, the Earth Lagoon after the circuit, and the midge net in July.
Myvatn in a nutshell
Our travellers have planned 72,000+ stops in Iceland on Stippl. That is where the numbers here come from.
Two nights make sense at Myvatn, and one is a jog. Skútustaðagígar's pseudocraters, Dimmuborgir's lava arches, Hverfjall's rim, Grjótagjá's hot cave for looking only, Hverir's boiling mud and Krafla's Víti crater sit on one paved loop, the Earth Lagoon is the renamed nature baths at half the Blue Lagoon's crowd, Dettifoss is Europe's most powerful waterfall forty-five minutes east, Goðafoss sits halfway to Akureyri, and Lofthellir's lava cave keeps centuries-old ice sculptures at the end of a super-jeep track. Most travellers give Myvatn 1 night on Stippl.
Myvatn is the ring completist's stop, and the scarcest bed on the northern ring. 34.8% of stops here run two nights, of everyone who plans it on Stippl, one of the highest two-night shares in the country, while 15.53% are a pass-through on the way between Akureyri and the east, and 30.2% of Myvatn plans are made half a year out, the earliest lead of any Icelandic stop, because the rooms sell out the moment the dates exist.
Book the bed the moment the dates exist, sleep on the east shore with the sights at the door, drive the circuit in one day and give Dettifoss and the whales the second, and finish in the Earth Lagoon. Skip bathing in Grjótagjá, since the cave has run above fifty degrees since the Krafla fires, and skip independent winter here, because the region empties, the roads close in hours and the December plans are a sliver.

The measured audience, with every partner destination lifted from here and the Diamond Circle taken as one decision on the way to the east.
Crowd-averse volcano lovers
The Golden Circle's drama at a fraction of its traffic, with the live Krafla zone and its green crater lake as the upgrade.
Families who walk short
Nearly every sight is under an hour on the flat: Dimmuborgir's paved loop, the crater rims and the boardwalks over the mud.
Two-night planners
34.8% of Stippl stops here run two nights, one for the lake circuit and one for Dettifoss and the whales at Húsavík.
Early bookers
30.2% of Myvatn plans on Stippl are made half a year out, the earliest lead in Iceland, because the beds are the scarcest on the northern ring.
Birdwatchers
Europe-grade duck diversity breeds on the protected wetland, with the nesting shores closed in spring and the hides on the south shore.
Maybe not for you: winter independents, because the region empties, the roads close in hours and the December plans are a sliver; and midge-phobic high-summer campers, since the name means midge lake and the July clouds are at their worst around a tent.
Summer
June to August
The whole circuit open, the ducks on the water, the midges at their worst in July and the beds gone months ahead, with August the second busiest month on Stippl.
September
The shoulder
The busiest month on Stippl and the best one: midge-free, the aurora back over the craters, the Dettifoss roads still open and the baths at their quietest.
Winter
November to March
Snowmobiles and super-jeep tours across the lava, the Earth Lagoon steaming in the snow, and the Route 1 stretch across Mývatnsöræfi closing routinely in storms.
Nesting season
May and early June
The lake's shores closed to walkers while the ducks breed, so the circuit keeps to the marked paths and the hides.

The volcanic circuit
Skútustaðagígar's pseudocraters, Dimmuborgir's arches, Hverfjall's rim, Grjótagjá's hot cave for looking only, Hverir's boiling mud and Krafla's Víti crater, one day on one paved loop.
The Earth Lagoon
The renamed nature baths above the east shore, milky blue at half the Blue Lagoon's crowd, with the new building opening through 2026.
Dettifoss and Selfoss
Europe's most powerful waterfall forty-five minutes east with its horseshoe neighbour upstream, from the paved west road in season.
Goðafoss on the way
The conversion legend's falls halfway to Akureyri, right off Route 1, where the year-1000 lawspeaker threw his idols.
Lofthellir
The lava cave with centuries-old ice sculptures inside it, reached by super-jeep tour only across the lava field.
The Diamond Circle
The 260-kilometre northern answer to the Golden Circle: the lake, Dettifoss, the whales at Húsavík and the Ásbyrgi canyon.
The east shore
The base
Vogafjós farm, Dimmuborgir and the Earth Lagoon on the slope above, the shore the guides pick because the sights are at the door. For sleepers.
The sights at the door and the baths above, but the scarcest beds on the northern ring.
Reykjahlíð, the north shore
The service village
The only services on the lake: the fuel, the small shop, the church that the lava stopped at and the information centre. For practical stops.
The only fuel and shop on the lake, though the village is a crossroads rather than a place.
Skútustaðir, the south shore
The crater fields
The pseudocrater loop, the quiet farms and the bird hides, with fewer buses and the walk around the craters at any hour. For walkers.
The crater loop and fewer coaches, and a drive to the baths.
The Námaskarð and Krafla side
The boiling east
Hverir's mud pools, Víti's green crater lake and Leirhnjúkur's steaming lava, the geothermal drama that nobody sleeps in. For everyone by day.
The geothermal drama, and no bed anywhere near it.

The beds here are the scarcest on the northern ring and sell out months ahead in season, so the room is booked the moment the dates exist, on the east shore if the sights at the door matter and in the village if the price does. Most travellers give Myvatn 1 night on Stippl, and the second is what the circuit and the falls need.

Guesthouses and the year-round campsite, €15 to €200 a night.
Skútustaðir, the south shore

The ropes are the rulebook
Geothermal crust is thin, moss does not heal and nesting shores close in spring, and the region's patience with wanderers is spent.
No bathing in Grjótagjá
The cave has run above fifty degrees since the Krafla fires and the ban is absolute; the baths exist for exactly this urge.
The midge net is respect
Locals wear them, so July visitors should too, and the head net is costume rather than comedy.
The shower rule applies
The naked pre-soak shower with soap is enforced at the Earth Lagoon as at every pool in the country.
The wetland is working
Farms sit in the lava, the ducks breed on the shores, and the whole lake is protected, so the paths mean what they say.
Bread comes out of the ground
Hverabrauð is rye baked a day in geothermal soil, sold at the farm cafe, and the sulphur in the air is the oven.

The midges of Myvatn are the food chain's foundation. They feed the trout and the duck colonies that make the wetland famous, which is why the nuisance is protected.
Hverabrauð at Myvatn is baked in the ground. Rye tins buried for a day in geothermal soil, sold at the farm cafe with smoked trout.
Krafla's Víti crater near Myvatn means hell. A 1724 explosion crater whose lake is now placidly green, and the fires in the fissure zone ran again from 1975 to 1984.
Apollo astronauts trained in the volcanic terrain at Myvatn. The lava fields and the craters stood in for the moon before the landings.
Dimmuborgir's arches at Myvatn are a drained lava lake's plumbing. They stand where the melt ran out, and the Yule Lads are said to live in them.
30.2% of Myvatn plans on Stippl are made half a year out. The earliest lead of any Icelandic stop, because the beds are the scarcest on the northern ring.
One paved loop
Everything is a short walk off it, Hverfjall's rim is the only real climb, and even that is thirty minutes up.
Name the west car park
The map app sends Dettifoss to the gravel east side, so the paved west parking is typed in explicitly.
Boiling ground is the hazard
Hverir and Leirhnjúkur's crusts are thin and scalding, so stay behind the ropes and keep children's hands held.
Grjótagjá scalds
The cave water has run above fifty degrees since the Krafla fires, and the bathing ban is safety rather than bureaucracy.
Winter shuts the region fast
Storms shut the Route 1 stretch across Mývatnsöræfi routinely, so road.is each morning and slack in the plan.
Two nights, booked early
34.8% of Stippl stops here run two nights and 30.2% of plans are made half a year out, because the beds go first on the northern ring.
Close to it: most travellers give Myvatn 1 night on Stippl but 34.8% of stops run two, one of the highest two-night shares in the country, which is one day for the lake circuit and one for Dettifoss and the whales at Húsavík. One night covers the highlights at a jog.
Different products: the renamed nature baths are half the price and a fraction of the crowd, mid-rebuild into their new form, with the same milky blue above the lake. If the ring brings you here anyway it replaces the icon for most people, and only 8.8% of Myvatn plans on Stippl are made inside a fortnight, so the slot is booked with the bed.
No, only maddening. They do not bite, the biting kind is rare here, and the net wins; the locals wear them and so should July visitors. September is midge-free, the aurora is back, and it is the busiest month here on Stippl for exactly that reason.
No. Grjótagjá has been too hot since the eruptions of the 1970s and bathing is banned absolutely, so the visit is to look, photograph the light on the water and then go to the Earth Lagoon, which exists for exactly this urge.
With a package or a jeep tour it is spectacular and empty; independently the roads and the daylight fight you, the region closes in hours and only a sliver of Myvatn plans on Stippl start in December. Put the winter version into Stippl as a guided day from Akureyri, then ask people in subreddits like r/VisitingIceland whether the snowmobile or the cave was worth it.
Both. The lake district is Myvatn and Reykjahlíð is its service village on the north shore, so beds list under either name, and 30.2% of Myvatn plans on Stippl are made half a year out because the rooms under both names go first on the northern ring.
