Berat is called the city of a thousand windows and the name is literal. Rows of identical windows stack up the Mangalem hillside, and they only read as one composition from Gorica across the river, which is why the seven-arched Ottoman bridge of 1780 is the most photographed thing here. The castle above is still inhabited, with houses, shops and Byzantine churches inside the walls rather than ruins. The Onufri museum sits in the sixteenth-century cathedral, holding the icons and the red pigment they are known for.
Berat is where an Albanian trip stops being a beach week. Trips carrying it hold nearly three times the Albanian stops of trips that skip it, and its one real partner is Gjirokastër, the country's other Ottoman UNESCO town, which turns up far more often than trip length alone would predict. Tirana is on nine in ten Berat trips and means nothing, because at that rate the capital is plumbing rather than a pairing.
One night is what almost everyone takes, and nine in ten stop at two. That is the tightest distribution we measure anywhere, and the town is small enough to earn it. The evening happens on the modern pedestrian boulevard rather than in the old quarters. Osum Canyon, the country's largest gorge, is ninety minutes away and worth a guide over a hire car. Skip a longer stay, because Berat is a stop and it will be honest with you about being one.

The onward road is south, and the data agrees. Gjirokastër appears on Berat trips at 1.41× the mechanical floor. Gjirokastër's own pass confirmed it from the other side at 2.50× against Berat's 2.52×, though it is no longer the country's strongest pairing, since Shkodër carries Valbonë at 3.18× and Theth at 2.85×

Between Tirana and the south, as a night rather than a detour. Berat carries 7.79% of everything planned in Albania on Stippl, third after Tirana and Sarande, because it sits on the road almost everyone drives. Slot it into Stippl on the day you move from the capital towards the coast.
One night. 1 night is the normal stay in the Berat stops planned on Stippl, and it covers the castle quarter, the Mangalem windows and a dinner down by the river. A second night only earns its keep if you are heading out to the Osum canyon.
An overnight, and only just. 53.0% of Berat stops planned on Stippl are a single night and hardly anyone gives it a third. Stay anyway: the town is at its best in the hour before dark, once the day buses have gone and the windows start lighting up.
Mangalem for the photographs and the cafes, Gorica for the view back across the river and a cheaper bed. They face each other across the Osum and the old bridge between them takes five minutes to walk, so the choice is about where you want to wake up rather than what you will see.
Yes. Several guesthouses operate inside the walls, which are still an inhabited quarter rather than a monument, so the cobbled lanes are yours once the day visitors have gone back down. The trade-off is the climb, and with luggage in summer heat it is a real one.
The Osum canyon, about an hour and a half away, with rafting through the gorge in spring and early summer while the water is high. Later in the season it turns into a walk between the walls instead. It is the reason to give Berat a second night rather than one.
