Liberia is Guanacaste's capital, the White City, and the only town in Costa Rica whose streets read as genuinely colonial. This is cattle country and the sabanero museum in the centre is the most distinctive thing in it. Rincón de la Vieja is twenty-five kilometres north-east, with boiling mud pots, steam vents and four kinds of forest inside a two-hour walk. Santa Rosa, the country's oldest national park, is thirty-five kilometres north, and Palo Verde holds the largest waterbird population in Costa Rica.
Almost nobody sleeps in Liberia, and a quarter of them do not sleep here at all. More than a quarter of the people who write it into an itinerary never sleep there at all, against under four in a hundred at every other Costa Rican destination, and two thirds of the rest stay exactly one night. It is also the only place in the country whose trips are less likely to carry San José than average: arriving through Guanacaste means skipping the capital.
So take the 1 night, and take it rather than a five in the morning transfer. The airport is twelve kilometres west, the town has the hospital, the banks and the supermarkets, and Rincón de la Vieja is the day out that makes the stop worth something. Nicaragua is two hours north if you are crossing. Do not come here for a beach, because the nearest sand is half an hour west and that is where everybody goes.

As the front door to Guanacaste. Travellers planning Liberia on Stippl book about 66 days out, the shortest lead in Costa Rica, which fits a stop people slot in around a flight. The airport is fifteen minutes from town, so put it into Stippl as the arrival and drive straight to the coast.
Rarely. 27.9% of Liberia stops planned on Stippl carry no night at all, which is what a gateway looks like: an airport, a bus hub and a small colonial centre. Sleep here only when your flight lands late or leaves before the coast roads are worth driving.
One night, at most. 67.0% of Liberia stops planned on Stippl are a single night. The colonial centre and its two small museums are an hour's walk end to end. Rincon de la Vieja, an hour north, is the only thing here that justifies giving it a full day.
Because it is far closer to the Guanacaste beaches and a much smaller airport to get through. Tamarindo is about ninety minutes away and the Papagayo hotels under an hour, against four and a half hours or more from the capital. The trade-off is fewer flights and often a higher fare.
Rincon de la Vieja is the answer: a volcano national park an hour north with fumaroles, mud pots, waterfalls and a good half day of trails. It closes one day a week, so check before you drive out. In town there is the colonial centre and two small museums, and honestly that is it.
Yes. Liberia is the bus hub for Guanacaste and services run out to Tamarindo, Playas del Coco, Samara and the rest of the coast through the day. They are slow and they stop often, but they cost very little, and for one or two people they beat a car with the compulsory cover.
