Koh Phangan runs two lives at once, and which one you meet depends on the date you pick. Haad Rin holds the Full Moon Party and the whole apparatus around it, while the north and west hold the yoga and wellness scene at Srithanu, Bottle Beach at the end of a jungle walk or a taxi boat, the sandbar out to Koh Ma at low tide and the climb up Khao Ra. Most travellers give the island 3 nights on Stippl.
Almost half of Koh Phangan is planned around the moon, and the people who avoid it stay longer. 47.7% of Koh Phangan stops planned on Stippl fall inside the full-moon window. Travellers who plan outside it give the island 4 nights rather than three, so the party version of this island and the quiet one are different lengths of holiday.
Pick your dates first and your beach second, because here they are the same decision. If you are coming for the party, Haad Rin Sunrise is the beach, it runs through to sunrise and you pay at the gate on the night. If you are not, base yourself around Srithanu or Chaloklum, take the longtail to Bottle Beach, walk the sandbar to Koh Ma at low tide for the snorkelling, and dive Sail Rock, which is the best site in the Gulf. Khao Ra is a couple of hours up through jungle for the view across the whole island.

dozens of beaches, low-tide sandbank walks, a national park with waterfalls and royal inscriptions, and a 627 m summit; all of it needs a scooter or taxis to reach
Divers, with a caveat
Sail Rock is credibly the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand and is reachable from here, along with Samran Pinnacle, Hin Yippon, Koh Ma and Ang Thong. But Koh Tao, one hour north, is the region's certification capital and no source compares prices
Families, in one specific place
Thong Nai Pan: gentle water, floury sand, resorts, a waterfall park nearby. This is a recommendation about a bay, not about the island

113–147 mm a month on 14–16 days, delivered as tropical downpours rather than continuous rain. Prices fall, crowds thin, the island does not shut down, and the waterfalls start running. A defensible high-value choice
North-east monsoon

the genuine wet season on this coast: 290 mm in October, 490 mm in November, 209 mm in December. This is the window where the "short afternoon showers" framing understates it, and where weather-dependent boats (Bottle Beach taxi boats, the Thong Nai Pan service) are least reliable
- Daily maxima sit between 29.0 and 32.6 °C every month, a spread of about 3.6 °C, and nights never drop below about 24 °C. The month you pick changes the rain, not the heat
- twice per lunar cycle, roughly a week before and a week after the full moon, at a purpose-built forest venue at Baan Tai. A ticketed festival with three stages, not a beach party; in its 23rd year as of 2026
- around each new moon, jungle clearing at Baan Tai, psytrance

- In March 2026 the Haad Rin village committee and the business operators' association resolved that any party falling on a major Buddhist holy day (Wan Phra Yai) is postponed to the night after. That is why 26 October 2026 became 27 October: the full moon coincided with Ok Phansa, the end of Buddhist Lent. Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asahna Bucha and Ok Phansa are all full-moon observances, so the collision is structural, not occasional
- 28 Aug (Fri), 26 Sep (Sat), 27 Oct (Tue, moved), 24 Nov (Tue), 24 Dec (Thu), plus the 31 Dec countdown party. Earlier in 2026 the parties fell on 3 Jan, 2 Feb, 3 Mar, 2 Apr, 1 May, 31 May, 29 Jun and 29 Jul, May 2026 carried two, which is what a lunar cycle does to a Gregorian calendar
- October 2016: King Bhumibol Adulyadej died on 13 October, a month-long ban on public entertainment followed, and the 17 October party was called off, the first cancellation in recent memory. It returned on 15 November 2016, the day after the ban lifted, opening with a memorial led by the Surat Thani governor and the burning beach sign changed to read "For Our King"; officials estimated ~30,000 people. 5 November 2025: cancelled after the death of Queen Mother Sirikit on 24 October 2025 and the mourning period that followed
- During the 2025 cancellation the organisers' own site said cancelled while word on the island still said it was going ahead. Check fullmoonpartythailand.com itself rather than word of mouth or a booked transfer
- In party week accommodation prices climb across the whole island, scooters get scarce, ferries fill and Haad Rin fills up; outside it the island is cheaper and quieter. Many repeat visitors deliberately plan around it in the avoiding sense
- and this is the planning tension nobody states outright. Peak flow is the wet months, roughly May–October and into the Oct–Dec peak; from November to April the flow drops considerably while the trails still work. A February visitor gets perfect beach weather and a disappointing waterfall
- Reported sizes run ~20,000 across the older Dutch sources, "up to 30,000" and "10,000–30,000+" in the recent English ones, and 40,000 in a decade-old text; officials counted about 30,000 at the November 2016 return. 20,000–30,000 is the honest band, topping out in December–January
- One source claims it is "usually at the start of the month", which is astronomically false, the 2026 parties land on dates from the 1st to the 31st. Point at the published schedule

Photo ID is checked and the name on the ticket must match your passport; tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable, online sales close hours before doors, and the organisers advise arriving before midnight to avoid up to an hour queueing
Bottle Beach and the Bottle Beach viewpoint
the hardest-to-reach beach on the island. Taxi boat from Chaloklum or a ~1 h jungle hike; the viewpoint is 40–60 minutes uphill from the beach with a rope-assisted section on a boulder that one source calls sketchy if you are afraid of heights, or 15–20 minutes on a signposted trail from the inland car park
Khao Ra summit

Where to stay in Koh Phangan
Where you sleep decides which island you get, and it is a character choice rather than a price choice. Five workable answers: Haad Rin for the parties, Baan Tai/Baan Kai for cheap and central with the parties in reach, Thong Sala for logistics and food, the west and north coasts for calm beaches and sunsets, Thong Nai Pan and the north-east for families and resorts. Srithanu is the sixth if wellness is the trip

Koh Phangan customs and what not to do
Temples sit beside the party
twenty-plus of them and an active monastic life, and the rules do not relax because the island has a reputation: cover legs and shoulders, remove shoes, visit in the morning when it is quietest
Some waterfalls are sacred
a few are royal sites too. Namtok Phaeng carries small altars and offering places and is described as spiritually significant locally; Than Sadet holds King Rama V's rock inscription from 1888 and gives the national park its name. Treat both as more than swimming holes
Holy days move the party
a full-moon Wan Phra Yai carries a nationwide alcohol restriction, and the organisers' own answer is to postpone to the following night. The licensing rule itself is country-level
Wellness is a real subculture
and the most useful note about it is the honest one: warm on the surface, cliquey underneath, heavily long-stay, occasionally performative. Newcomers should expect groups already formed
The party has an etiquette
it is not decorative. The framing that recurs is that it works because most people look out for one another: know your limits, don't climb things, don't become the person your friends spend the night rescuing, and remember it is somebody's home town
Beach plastic is a live issue
with an organised volunteer response. Depending on wind direction it washes up in quantity; organised beach cleans run and are joinable, and refillable-bottle practice is actively pushed by local businesses
Two animal-welfare flashpoints
both specific to this island: a roadside caged-animal café near the Phaeng waterfall parking, which one source asks readers to avoid in favour of the island's stray-animal charity, and the coconut-harvesting monkeys on trucks
Do
- Book the boat off the island as well as the one on, if your dates touch full-moon week
- Carry cash in small notes; assume no cards at parties, on boats and at markets, and none at all in the Haad Yuan bay
- Wear closed shoes to parties: broken glass on the sand, wet rocks and unlit paths
- Agree a songthaew price before you get, and walk out to the main road from the pier for a fairer one
- Wear a helmet, and pay the cash deposit rather than handing over your passport
- Cover up at temples and go in the morning
- Check the party calendar on arrival: posters, noticeboards and the organisers' own dates page carry things that are advertised nowhere else
Don't
- Don't ride a scooter after drinking, and don't ride the steep or unlit sections at night
- Don't drive yourself over the Haad Yuan track; take the boat, or the 4×4 when the sea is up
- Don't bring your passport, camera or anything irreplaceable to a party
- Don't leave a drink unattended, accept an opened one, or drink from a bucket you didn't watch being poured
- Don't swim at night at a beach party
- Don't assume a party island suspends Thai drug law, plain-clothes police work the beach
- Don't publish or plan around 2027 party dates as if they were fixed

The scene started as a leaving party: two sources tell the same origin story from different sides, a birthday or farewell gathering for backpackers in the late 1980s that happened to fall on a full moon and was repeated every month since
The party has a published rule for religion beating the moon: since March 2026, any Full Moon Party landing on a major Buddhist holy day is formally postponed to the next night, a village committee and a business association amending an astronomical calendar
Koh Ma is reachable on foot at low tide across a natural white sandbar that appears and disappears with the tide
King Rama V carved his monogram into the rock at Than Sadet in 1888 and Thai kings used the spot for generations: a royal heritage site inside a party island's national park, and the reason the park carries the name
The island's granite boulders are treated as architecture rather than obstacles: one bungalow's bathroom was built around them rather than clearing them
A long-running bar on the remote south-east corner, reachable only by boat and jungle trail, has been operating since 2004
Local tips for Koh Phangan
Three Samui ferry times
the question has no single answer. 30 minutes, 45 minutes and two hours are three different pier-and-vessel combinations: a fast catamaran from Bangrak/Pralan or Nathon, Songserm's slow boat from Nathon, and the Raja vehicle ferry from Lipa Noi on the far side of Samui. No source named a pier, which is why it read as a conflict for years. Never publish a bare duration, attach the pier
Thong Sala is the port
it takes essentially every scheduled service. There are in fact two piers a short walk apart there, the main ferry port used by Raja, Seatran and Lomprayah, and a separate Songserm pier. The only other scheduled landings are Haad Rin (Haad Rin Queen) and Thong Nai Pan for one seasonal, weather-dependent boat
A high-frequency corridor
not a remote one: roughly 48 crossings a day from Samui alone, run by nine companies, with the bulk finishing 17:30–18:30 and the last scheduled departure around 20:30. Outside full-moon week, walk-up is normally fine and pier prices match online prices
Leaving after the party is hard
no source says so. Over the full-moon window vessel capacity is the binding constraint and advance booking is effectively mandatory; operators lay on special services in both directions, outbound roughly 17:00–24:00 and returns roughly 01:00–06:00, about hourly, at two to three times the daytime fare (a ~200–300 THB daytime crossing becoming a 500–800 THB party package). These services are scheduled per party date and are not in the standard timetables, so check the operator for your date rather than a published schedule
Roads are the everyday risk
scooters most of all, and the dispute over that is settled. Four independent sources describe steep hills, sharp bends, poorly lit stretches and conditions that get worse after rain, against one lone claim that the roads are fine. The party's own organisers side with the four, in stronger terms than any blogger used: the roads are "notoriously dangerous especially around the Full Moon Party", wear a helmet, and better yet don't drive yourself at all. A body with a commercial interest in you turning up telling you not to ride is strong evidence. The honest framing: the main ring road is fine; the hills and connectors are not, and both are worse at night and after rain
Frequently asked questions about Koh Phangan
Look at the lunar calendar before anything else, because the island changes character around it. Lay the Gulf stops out in Stippl and slide Koh Phangan along until it sits where you want it relative to the full moon. Then ask people who have been on both sides of that date, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism.
No, and the plans say so: only 15.1% of Koh Phangan stops planned on Stippl are a single night, so most people are not flying in for one event and leaving. The north and west of the island run yoga and wellness stays, jungle walks and the best diving in the Gulf, and they are quiet by comparison.
Its neighbours, almost always: 58.8% of the trips that include Koh Phangan on Stippl carry all three Gulf islands. Koh Samui has the airport and the beds, Koh Tao has the diving, and the ferries between the three run often enough to treat them as one long stop.
By boat only, since the island has no airport. Ferries come from Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Donsak on the mainland and Chumphon, and nearly all of them land at Thong Sala rather than at Haad Rin. Work out how far your beach sits from that pier before booking, because several beaches have no road to them at all.
Haad Rin Sunrise Beach, on the southern tip of the island, on the night of the full moon and running through to sunrise. You pay at the gate on the night and there is no advance ticket to buy. For the same thing at half the scale, the Halfmoon Festival runs twice a lunar cycle in a forest venue at Baan Tai.
A little over two months. Travellers leave 77 days between planning a Koh Phangan stop on Stippl and arriving. That is tight for a full-moon date, when the Haad Rin beds are the first thing on the island to go, and comfortable for anything else.
