Almost half of Koh Phangan is planned around the moon, and the people who avoid it stay longer. 47.7% of Koh Phangan stops planned on Stippl fall inside the full-moon window. Travellers who plan outside it give the island 4 nights rather than three, so the party version of this island and the quiet one are different lengths of holiday.
Pick your dates first and your beach second, because here they are the same decision. If you are coming for the party, Haad Rin Sunrise is the beach, it runs through to sunrise and you pay at the gate on the night. If you are not, base yourself around Srithanu or Chaloklum, take the longtail to Bottle Beach, walk the sandbar to Koh Ma at low tide for the snorkelling, and dive Sail Rock, which is the best site in the Gulf. Khao Ra is a couple of hours up through jungle for the view across the whole island.

Party-first backpackers
The Full Moon Party is the best-known single event on the Southeast Asia trail, and Halfmoon, Black Moon and the Haad Yuan circuit fill the weeks around it.
Wellness and yoga travellers
Srithanu and the Haad Tien retreat corner are a separate ecosystem: drop-in classes, multi-week teacher trainings, and sober nightlife built on ecstatic dance rather than alcohol.
Beach people who move around
Dozens of beaches, low-tide sandbank walks, a national park with waterfalls and a 627 m summit, all of it needing a scooter or taxis to reach.
Divers, with a caveat
Sail Rock is credibly the best dive site in the Gulf and reachable from here, but Koh Tao, an hour north, is where the region certifies.

Thong Nai Pan has gentle water, floury sand, resorts and a waterfall park nearby; this is a recommendation about a bay, not about the island.
Digital nomads and long-stayers
Most people give it 3 nights, but a substantial resident foreign community, cheap monthly rates outside peak and a brunch culture at Srithanu keep plenty for months.
Maybe not for you: anyone who needs to fly in and out fast, since there is no airport and a missed boat means a missed flight; food-led travellers expecting Thailand's best cooking, because the standard is average; and light sleepers in Haad Rin in party week.

Driest and best for the beach
February to April
Few rain days, building heat, calm sea, every boat running. April is the hottest and the last comfortable dry month.
Southwest monsoon
May to September
Tropical downpours rather than continuous rain, prices falling and crowds thinning. The island does not shut down, and the waterfalls are at their best.
Northeast monsoon
October to December
The genuine wet season on this coast, with November the wettest month by a distance. This is where the short-afternoon-showers line stops being true.
- The Full Moon Party follows the lunar full moon and nothing else, so the date moves every month. In party week rooms climb across the whole island, scooters get scarce and the ferries fill; outside it the island is a different place.
- January is the month most travellers plan Phangan for on Stippl, about 77 days ahead. 11.5% of plans are made inside a fortnight, which works unless the fortnight holds a full moon.
- There is no cool season. The daily high sits within a few degrees all year and the nights never drop below the mid twenties; the month you pick changes the rain and the sea, not the temperature.
- The waterfalls are best exactly when the beaches are worst. Peak flow is May to October and into the wet months; a dry-season visit gets the sand and a trickle.
- Parties get cancelled for national mourning, not for weather. It has happened at short notice and word spreads unevenly; check the organisers' own site the day before, not the hostel noticeboard.

Things to do in Koh Phangan
The Full Moon Party
Join twenty to thirty thousand people on Haad Rin Sunrise Beach with buckets, UV paint, fire shows and sound systems on the sand until sunrise, about €5 at the gate. Book the room weeks ahead; the guesthouses nearby set three-night minimums.
Haad Yuan and Haad Tien
Take the longtail from Haad Rin to the alternative circuit: the cliffside Eden garden party from Saturday dusk into Sunday, the daytime session on the beach below it and Guy's Bar next door. About €5 by boat each way.
Halfmoon Festival
Go to the island's properly produced festival rather than a beach party: three stages in a purpose-built forest venue at Baan Tai, twice a lunar cycle, from half past nine to sunrise, about €30. Photo ID is checked at the gate.
Bottle Beach
Reach the hardest-to-reach beach on the island by taxi boat from Chaloklum or an hour's jungle hike, then climb forty to sixty minutes to the viewpoint above it, with a rope-assisted section. Go in the morning and carry water.
Khao Ra summit
Climb to the island's highest point at 627 metres, two to three hours round trip through jungle to an exposed rock with views across the whole island, for about €0.50 at the trailhead. Early morning or late afternoon.
Koh Ma across the sandbar
Walk to the islet joined to the north-west coast by a white sandbank that appears and disappears with the tide, one of the island's best snorkelling spots. Free, tide-dependent, and the Mae Haad beach bars have the tide table.

Party village, quiet between moons
The Full Moon Party village at the southern tip: Sunrise Beach hosts the party, hostels, bars and clubs fill the lanes, and between moons it is quiet. For party travellers and for nobody else in the week after.

The compromise base, main road
On the main road between Thong Sala and Haad Rin, fifteen minutes from the party: ATMs, supermarkets, scooter rental, a long beach and the big venues nearby. For first visits that want the parties and sleep.

Pier town, night market
The island's capital and port: every ferry, every songthaew route and the food scene start here, with the Phantip night market nightly and the Saturday walking street. For a practical base and a night before the boat.

Where to stay in Koh Phangan
Stay in Baan Tai if you will only book once: it is fifteen minutes from the party, central, cheap, with ATMs and supermarkets, and the west coast is an easy ride for the recovery days. Most people give Koh Phangan 3 nights on Stippl. Around full moon the whole island tightens, with rates up and minimum stays of three to seven nights, so book that week early.
Haad Rin
Party hostels and cheap guesthouses, dorms €8 to €15 and doubles €20 to €50, tripling in full moon week.
Baan Tai
Bungalows, guesthouses and mid-range resorts along the road, €15 to €60, with the big venues nearby.
Thong Sala
Plain hotels and guesthouses near the pier, €15 to €45, the safe address for arrival and departure nights.
Srithanu
Long-stay bungalows and yoga retreats, rooms €20 to €60, retreats €120 to €150 a night all-in.
The west coast

Koh Phangan customs and what not to do
Temples sit beside the party
More than twenty of them with an active monastic life, and the rules do not relax because the island has a reputation: cover legs and shoulders, shoes off, mornings are quietest.
Some waterfalls are sacred
Namtok Phaeng carries small altars and offering places, and Than Sadet holds King Rama V's rock inscription from 1888; swim below the shrines, not in them.
Holy days move the party
A full moon that falls on a Buddhist holy day carries a nationwide alcohol restriction, and the organisers postpone to the following night; check the date on arrival.
The party has an etiquette
It works because most people look out for one another: know your limits, do not climb things, and do not become the person your friends spend the night rescuing.
Wellness is a real subculture
Warm on the surface, cliquey underneath and heavily long-stay; newcomers should expect groups already formed and go to a drop-in class rather than wait to be asked.
Two animal-welfare flashpoints
The roadside caged-animal café by the Phaeng waterfall car park and the coconut-harvesting monkeys are the two to walk past; the island's stray-animal charity is the one to support.
Do
- Book the boat off the island as well as the one on, if your dates touch full-moon week
- Carry cash in small notes; no cards at parties, on boats or at markets, and none at all in Haad Yuan
- Wear closed shoes to parties: broken glass on the sand, wet rocks and unlit paths
- Agree a songthaew price before you get in, and walk out to the main road from the pier for a fairer one
- Check the party calendar on arrival; posters and noticeboards carry dates advertised nowhere else
Don't
- Ride a scooter after drinking, or the steep and unlit sections at night
- Bring your passport, camera or anything irreplaceable to a party
- Leave a drink unattended, accept an opened one, or drink from a bucket you did not watch being poured
- Swim at night at a beach party
- Assume a party island suspends Thai drug law; plain-clothes police work the beach

Fun facts about Koh Phangan
The Full Moon Party started as a leaving party in the late 1980s. A farewell gathering for backpackers happened to fall on a full moon, was repeated the next month, and has been held every month since.
Since March 2026 the moon loses to religion. Any Full Moon Party landing on a major Buddhist holy day is formally postponed to the next night, by a village committee amending an astronomical calendar.
Koh Ma is reachable on foot at low tide. A natural white sandbar links it to the north-west coast and disappears with the tide, so the walk back has a deadline.
King Rama V carved his monogram into the rock at Than Sadet in 1888. Thai kings used the spot for generations, which is why the national park inside a party island carries the name.
November alone brings 490 mm of rain to the island. That is more than February, March and April combined, because the Gulf coast runs on the opposite monsoon to the Andaman.
Koh Phangan has no airport and never has had one. Everything arrives by boat at Thong Sala pier, which drives the full-moon booking crunch and most of the island's character.
Khao Ra reaches 627 metres in the middle of the island. The interior is mountain and jungle rather than a rim of beach around a flat middle, which is why the connector roads are so steep.
Local tips for Koh Phangan
Thong Sala is the port
Essentially every scheduled service lands there, two piers a short walk apart. From Samui it is thirty minutes on the catamaran or two hours on the slow ferry, on the same ticket sites.
Book the party-week boats early
Around the Full Moon Party the vessel capacity is the binding constraint: the Friday sailings from Samui sell out two to three weeks ahead and leaving the day after is harder still.
Ring road fine, hills not
The southern and western runs are ordinary scooter roads; Thong Nai Pan, the Haad Rin hill and the interior are steep, unlit and where the accidents happen. Licences are checked on party dates.
How long to stay
Most people give Phangan 3 nights on Stippl, and the party is one of them at most; the north and west coasts, the waterfalls and Srithanu are the other two.
A way home before you go out
The party taxis at Baan Tai and Thong Sala are an informal network, not a service. Know how people leave, keep the fare in cash and wear closed shoes; the sand is glass by two.
Watch the drink, and the bucket
Drink spiking and methanol in cheap spirits are officially confirmed for this island, and the emergency services are overloaded on party nights. Buy sealed bottles, share nothing, and leave the passport in the room.
Koh Phangan questions, answered
Look at the lunar calendar before anything else, because the island changes character around it. Lay the Gulf stops out in Stippl and slide Koh Phangan along until it sits where you want it relative to the full moon. Then ask people who have been on both sides of that date, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism.
No, and the plans say so: only 15.1% of Koh Phangan stops planned on Stippl are a single night, so most people are not flying in for one event and leaving. The north and west of the island run yoga and wellness stays, jungle walks and the best diving in the Gulf, and they are quiet by comparison.
Its neighbours, almost always: 58.8% of the trips that include Koh Phangan on Stippl carry all three Gulf islands. Koh Samui has the airport and the beds, Koh Tao has the diving, and the ferries between the three run often enough to treat them as one long stop.
By boat only, since the island has no airport. Ferries come from Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Donsak on the mainland and Chumphon, and nearly all of them land at Thong Sala rather than at Haad Rin. Work out how far your beach sits from that pier before booking, because several beaches have no road to them at all.
Haad Rin Sunrise Beach, on the southern tip of the island, on the night of the full moon and running through to sunrise. You pay at the gate on the night and there is no advance ticket to buy. For the same thing at half the scale, the Halfmoon Festival runs twice a lunar cycle in a forest venue at Baan Tai.
A little over two months. Travellers leave 77 days between planning a Koh Phangan stop on Stippl and arriving. That is tight for a full-moon date, when the Haad Rin beds are the first thing on the island to go, and comfortable for anything else.
