Gqeberha is the Garden Route's eastern end, a port city on Algoa Bay with a holiday coast attached, an airport ten minutes from the beachfront and Addo Elephant Park forty-five minutes north. One night or none, the promenade and Route 67 on the way, and the flight home.
Gqeberha in a nutshell
54,000+ stops in South Africa are planned on Stippl, and this is the shape they make for Gqeberha.
Gqeberha is one night or none, and Addo is why people stop. The elephant park sits forty-five minutes north, malaria-free with more than six hundred animals and a waterhole hide, Route 67 runs sixty-seven public artworks through the old town to the Donkin pyramid and the lighthouse, the beachfront promenade runs eight kilometres paved from Hobie Beach, the boats go into Algoa Bay for whales, dolphins and seabirds, and the small game parks west of the city fill a half day. Most travellers give Gqeberha 1 night on Stippl.
Gqeberha is the airport, the car hire and the last supermarket, and the numbers say exactly that. 27.1% of stops here are no night at all, of everyone who plans it on Stippl, 86.1% of Gqeberha trips carry Cape Town, which is the Garden Route arriving at its end, and only 8.3% of plans are made inside a fortnight, because the city is the flight out rather than a decision of its own.
Sleep in Summerstrand by the beachfront or in Walmer by the airport, hire the car, walk Route 67 with a guide and the promenade without one, and give Addo the two nights rather than the city. Skip walking the centre freely, since the city has a serious crime picture, and skip the trip built around the St Croix penguins, because the colony has largely gone.

Gqeberha is the airport, the car hire and the last supermarket before the park, forty-five minutes north.
Families avoiding malaria
Addo is malaria-free, and it is the whole argument for the Eastern Cape over Kruger for a first safari with children.
East-coast beach travellers
The water is warmer than the Cape's and the promenade is genuinely good, eight kilometres paved from Hobie Beach.
Garden Route finishers
The natural end of the road and the flight home, on 86.1% of Stippl trips that began in Cape Town.
Guided art and history walkers
Route 67 is a serious piece of public art and the Donkin Reserve is a heritage site, walked guided rather than alone.
One-night flyers
27.1% of Stippl stops here are no night at all, the drop-off and the departure gate on the same day.
Maybe not for you: anyone expecting to walk a city centre freely, because the centre is visited by day with a guide; anyone without a car, since nothing here is walkable from anything else; and anyone coming for the St Croix penguins, which have largely gone.
Summer
December to March
Warm, the sea at its best on the east side and the domestic holiday on the beachfront, with 29.3% of starts on Stippl.
Autumn
April and May
The pick of the year: warm sea, calm days, the crowds gone and the Addo game viewing improving as the bush thins.
Winter
June to August
Mild, windier and the quietest months, with June the trough on Stippl, and the Addo viewing at its best as the water draws the animals.
Spring
September to November
Warming again, the whales in the bay and October the peak month on Stippl, which follows the Garden Route's own calendar.

Addo Elephant National Park
Forty-five minutes north: malaria-free, more than six hundred elephants and a waterhole hide singled out by everyone, self-driven or guided.
Route 67 and the Donkin Reserve
Sixty-seven public artworks by Eastern Cape artists through the old town, ending at the 1820 pyramid and the 1861 lighthouse, free and best walked with a guide.
The beachfront promenade
Eight kilometres paved from Hobie Beach south, for walking, running and cycling, the one stretch of the city built for it.
A boat into Algoa Bay
For whales, dolphins and seabirds in a marine protected area, with an operator that works with the bay's conservation programme.
The small game parks west of town
Kragga Kamma and Seaview, for a half day of giraffe and cheetah rather than a safari, on the way to the wild coast.
Sardinia Bay
The nature reserve coastline south-west of the city, a long beach walk with no development and the dunes behind it.
Summerstrand
Safe and convenient
The beachfront suburb south of the centre with Hobie and Pollok beaches, the eight-kilometre promenade, most of the hotels and the airport ten minutes away. For a first visit.
The beaches, the promenade and the hotels, but the dearest rooms in the city.
Walmer
Residential and quiet
The leafy suburb around the airport with guesthouses at lower prices than the beachfront, five minutes from the terminal. For an early flight.
Cheaper guesthouses five minutes from the terminal, and a drive to the sea.
Humewood
Practical
Between Summerstrand and the centre, with Kings and Humewood beaches, the museum complex and the older seafront hotels. For the older hotels.
The beaches and the museum, though the hotels show their age.
The Donkin Reserve and the centre
Historic, by day
The old town on the hill above the port with the pyramid, the lighthouse and Route 67's artworks, guided by preference and not walked at night. For the art, with a guide.
The pyramid, the lighthouse and the artworks, and not a place to walk alone.
Richmond Hill
Small and food-led
The restored Victorian streets above the centre, the city's restaurant and bar quarter and where the nightlife actually is. For dinner.
The restaurants and the bars, but a ride there and back.
Sardinia Bay and Schoenmakerskop
Wild and empty
The nature reserve coast south-west of the city, a long beach walk with the dunes behind it and no development at all. For the beach walk.
An empty coast twenty minutes out, and nothing else there.

Summerstrand is where the hotels are, along the beachfront and around the Boardwalk complex with the promenade at the door, and Walmer by the airport is the cheaper guesthouse answer for anyone flying early. Most travellers give Gqeberha 1 night on Stippl, and Addo's chalets take the nights that matter.

Use your host's name for it
Gqeberha is official and Port Elizabeth remains in daily use on signage, in business names and by many residents, and neither is a faux pas.
The click is not expected
The pronunciation is roughly guh-BEH-ra, with an initial Xhosa click that visitors are not expected to manage.
Tipping runs to fifteen
Ten to fifteen percent in restaurants, and the car guards expect a coin or two as everywhere in the country.
Townships go with a guide
As everywhere in South Africa, the township visits are made with a local operator rather than driven through.
Route 67 is about Mandela
The sixty-seven artworks stand for his sixty-seven years of public service, and they are read in that frame rather than as decoration.
The name is the buffalo's
Gqeberha means the place of the buffalo in Xhosa, from the Baakens River that runs through the city.

Gqeberha is named after the Baakens River. The name means the place of the buffalo in Xhosa, and the city took it officially in 2021 after two centuries as Port Elizabeth.
Route 67 in Gqeberha carries sixty-seven artworks for Mandela's sixty-seven years of public service. All by Eastern Cape artists, from the pyramid to the lighthouse.
The Donkin Pyramid in Gqeberha was built in 1820. By the Cape Colony's acting governor for his late wife Elizabeth, whose name the city carried for two centuries.
Addo, north of Gqeberha, protects Africa's densest elephant population. More than six hundred animals in a compact park that began with eleven.
St Croix Island off Gqeberha was the world's largest African penguin colony. It holds roughly a tenth of what it did in 2015, and the boat trips set expectations accordingly.
27.1% of stops in Gqeberha on Stippl are no night at all. The airport and the road to Addo rather than a destination, and the Garden Route's flight home.
The airport is in the city
Ten minutes from the beachfront, which is unusual and a real reason to route a trip through here rather than back to Cape Town.
Hire a car
The city is spread out, the distances between the beachfront, the centre and Addo are all driving distances, and there is no visitor-usable public transport.
The promenade is the walk
Eight kilometres paved from Hobie Beach, the one stretch of this city built for walking and cycling.
Lock the car while driving
Nothing on the seats, and alert at junctions and petrol stations, which is where the vehicle crime happens.
The centre is guided, by day
Route 67 and the Donkin Reserve are visited with a guide and never walked at night, which is the city's own advice.
One night, or none
Most travellers give Gqeberha 1 night on Stippl and 27.1% of stops are no night at all, because Addo takes the nights and the airport takes the morning.
Officially Gqeberha since the renaming, and Port Elizabeth and PE remain in wide daily use on signage, in business names and by many residents, so both are understood and neither offends. The stops on Stippl were merged across six spellings to count them, which tells you how the name is used.
One night, and many take none: most travellers give Gqeberha 1 night on Stippl and 27.1% of stops are no night at all, because the city is the airport and the road to Addo rather than a destination, and the promenade fits between the car hire and the drive north.
In Addo if the elephants are the point, which recommends two nights there, and the city as the bed on either side of them. Put Addo into Stippl as the two nights and Gqeberha as the arrival or the flight, then ask people who have done both in subreddits like r/southafrica whether the park's chalets were worth the booking.
With the usual habits, safe in the visitor areas: Summerstrand, the promenade and Richmond Hill by day and by car. Not for walking a city centre freely and not after dark, with vehicle crime at junctions and petrol stations the specific risk, so the doors stay locked and the seats stay empty.
Boat trips run into Algoa Bay for whales, dolphins and seabirds, but the St Croix colony has fallen to about a tenth of what it was, so the penguins are a bonus rather than the reason. 86.1% of Gqeberha trips on Stippl began in Cape Town, where Boulders has the reliable colony.
There barely is one: the climate is flat with no dry season, and the arrivals follow the Garden Route's calendar, with October the peak month on Stippl and June the quietest, and 29.3% of starts in the southern summer. April and May have the warm sea without the crowds.
