Plettenberg Bay: what to expect

The numbers here are drawn from 54,000+ planned stops across South Africa on Stippl.

Two or three nights is the Plettenberg Bay stay, and it is the one Garden Route stop where people stay put. Robberg is a nature reserve with three marked routes and a seal colony audible before it is visible, the whale boats leave Central Beach with southern rights from June to November and dolphins all year, the beaches differ from each other with Central for swimming and Lookout for surf, the Bloukrans bungee is the highest commercial bridge jump in the world forty minutes east, the Keurbooms takes a canoe into its gorge when the sea is rough, and the Crags hold a small cool-climate wine route. Most travellers give Plettenberg Bay 2 nights on Stippl.

Plettenberg Bay is the longest stop on the Garden Route, and the beach half of the Knysna choice. 82.9% of stops here run one to three nights, of everyone who plans it on Stippl, only 5.1% are no night at all, 89.5% of Plett trips carry Cape Town, and the summer-to-winter split is the town's own holiday calendar showing in the data.

Sleep in the central streets or Piesang Valley for the price, walk Robberg early before the heat, book the restaurants in season, and swim between the flags where the lifeguards are. Skip the expectation of a dry season, since there is not one, and skip the December school holiday on a tight budget, because the South African families fill the town and the prices with them.

Who Plettenberg Bay is for

Families on the Garden Route

Safe swimming at Central Beach, a peninsula walk everyone can do part of, and enough rain-day options within twenty minutes.

Long-walk coast people

Robberg's full circuit is about nine kilometres and four hours, past a seal colony, with whales offshore in season.

Adrenaline travellers

The world's highest bridge bungee is forty minutes east, with a skywalk under the bridge for anyone who wants it without the jump.

Late whale watchers

The bay holds whales far longer, from mid-May to February, and the dolphins are resident.

Travellers who like a rich town

The restaurants and the hotels are the best on the Garden Route and priced accordingly, and 2 nights is the norm on Stippl.

Stay-put planners

82.9% of Stippl stops here run one to three nights, the longest stop on the route and the one place on it people do not move.

Maybe not for you: anyone expecting a dry-season guarantee, because there is not one; travellers on a tight budget over the December school holiday, when South African families fill the town; and anyone who wants the lagoon and the Heads, which are Knysna's half an hour west.

Summer

December to March

The town's own holiday season, warm sea and full beaches, the families from mid-December and 29.1% of starts on Stippl.

Spring

September to November

The peak month on Stippl in September, the whales in the bay, the beaches empty and the Robberg circuit at its best in the cooler air.

Autumn

April and May

The sea still warm, the crowds gone and the restaurants easy to book, before the winter swell and the rain.

Winter

June to August

Mild, wetter, the whales arriving and June the trough month on Stippl, with the rooms at their cheapest and the surf at Lookout at its best.

  • Most travellers give Plettenberg Bay 2 nights on Stippl, and 82.9% of stops run one to three. One day for Robberg, one for the whales and the beaches, and the bungee as the third.
  • September is the peak month on Stippl and June is the trough. The summer-to-winter ratio here is 2.31 to one, the town's own holiday calendar rather than the weather's.
  • Only 8.7% of Plett plans on Stippl are made inside a fortnight. The top hotels take bookings months out and the December holiday takes the whole town.
  • There is no dry season. Every month gets between forty-seven and ninety millimetres, so the rain-day options within twenty minutes are part of the plan rather than a surprise.
  • The whales stay longer here. Southern rights from June to November, humpbacks passing on migration, and the bay itself holding whales from mid-May to February, which beats Hermanus for length.
  • Mid-December to early January is the town at its fullest. The South African families arrive, the restaurants take reservations and the beaches fill, so the visit moves a fortnight either way.

Whales and dolphins by boat

The permitted operators leave from Central Beach, with southern rights from June to November, humpbacks on migration and dolphins all year.

Two hundred and sixteen metres, the highest commercial bridge jump anywhere, with a skywalk under the bridge for the non-jumpers.

05

The areas of Plettenberg Bay

NeighbourhoodWhat it's likeWhy visit

Plett central

Practical and walkable

The town on the hill above the bay with the shops, the restaurants and the shortest walk to Central Beach, where the Baz Bus stops. For a first visit.

Why:

The restaurants and the walk to the beach, but the hill on the way back.

Central Beach

Busy and convenient

The sheltered town beach and its strip, with the swimming, the boat launch and the whale trips leaving from it. For families.

Why:

The swimming and the boats at the door, but the busiest strip in season.

Lookout Beach

Surfy and social

East of the centre by the lagoon mouth, with the surf break, the Whale Tail viewpoint and the sunset drinks. For surfers and the evening.

Why:

The surf and the sunset, though the beach itself comes and goes with the river.

Robberg Beach and Lower Robberg

Wide and windy

The long open beach south of town under the peninsula with kilometres of sand and far fewer people, and the residential slope behind it. For the walk and the reserve.

Why:

Kilometres of empty sand and the reserve at the end, but a ten-minute drive from the centre.

Piesang Valley

Residential, not touristed

The valley behind the town, named for orientation rather than charm, with guesthouses at lower prices than the beachfront. For budgets.

Why:

The cheaper guesthouses, and a drive to everything.

Keurbooms and the river

The lagoon end

The river mouth at the northern end of the bay with the canoes, the river beach and the lodges up the valley. For the river.

Why:

The river and the calm water, though the town is a drive back.

Before you go

Plettenberg Bay customs and what not to do

A holiday town first

Plett is a South African holiday town first and an international stop second, the opposite of Cape Town, and in December that is very obvious.

Tipping runs to fifteen

Ten to fifteen percent in restaurants, and the car guards expect a coin or two, as everywhere in the country.

Book in season

The town's capacity is small against its December population, so the restaurants take reservations from the school holidays on.

Respect the seals' distance

The Robberg path runs above the colony for a reason, and the reserve asks walkers to stay on it.

Swim between the flags

This coast has rip currents and the beaches are long, so the swim is where the lifeguards are and nowhere else.

The animal parks differ

Free-roaming sanctuaries and hands-on elephant attractions are different things, and the town's own guidance does not treat them as the same.

Do

  • Walk Robberg early, with water and no expectation of shade
  • Book the whale boat with a permitted operator
  • Swim between the flags at Central Beach
  • Book the restaurants in season
  • Canoe the Keurbooms when the sea is rough

Don't

  • Expect a dry season
  • Come over the December school holiday without a booking
  • Step off the Robberg path above the seals
  • Swim at Robberg Beach without lifeguards
  • Confuse a sanctuary with a hands-on attraction

Local tips for Plettenberg Bay

A car; the drive is the point

Plett is a stop on the highway between Cape Town and Gqeberha, and almost nobody arrives any other way.

George is the airport

About an hour and three quarters west, the practical fly-in point for a Garden Route section.

Beaches sit kilometres apart

Robberg is a ten-minute drive from the centre, so walking between the beaches is not a plan.

Bloukrans is forty minutes east

Forty kilometres on the highway, and the same road continues into Tsitsikamma and its suspension bridge.

The safer end of the coast

The national picture applies with petty crime in crowded places, vehicle crime as the specific risk and nothing left visible in the car.

Not alone after dark

Dropped at the door rather than walking the last stretch, which is the town's own published advice, and 2 nights is the stay on Stippl that rule covers.
