Monteverde is cloud forest, which means the cloud sits in the trees rather than above them, and about one per cent of the world's forest is like this. The town is Santa Elena and the reserve took the name. Over four hundred bird species live here and the Resplendent Quetzal is the one birdwatchers come for, the males trailing tail feathers longer than half a metre. Curi-Cancha is the least dense forest and the easiest place to actually see something, Selvatura strings eight bridges across three kilometres of canopy, and the longest zipline in the country runs 1.6 kilometres.
Half of every Costa Rican trip on Stippl includes Monteverde, and almost half of the stays are exactly two nights. That is the tightest two-night concentration anywhere we measure. Monteverde and La Fortuna share most of their trips and yet hold different rigid lengths, two nights here and three there, which is a country being planned from a template that specifies the nights.
Take a guide into the forest, and take 2 nights over it. Every account that used one says the guide was the difference between seeing wildlife and walking past it. Pack a layer and a rain jacket whatever the season, because it sits around nineteen degrees and windy at fourteen hundred metres. Skip it if you need certainty, since the mist that makes the place is also what hides the view, the birds and the bridges.

Local tips for Monteverde
Route 606 is the problem
The last stretch is potholes, some of them more like small craters, plus a section of gravel. Take an SUV
Do the drive in daylight
The approach runs through cloud, and fog on a mountain road after dark is the real risk
The jeep–boat–jeep
The crossing from La Fortuna is the pleasant option, sold as an experience rather than a transfer
Santa Teresa without the ferry
The northern route by car takes four to five hours and avoids the crossing
Trails are muddy
Closed shoes, long trousers and a waterproof, for most of the year

Monteverde questions, answered
Between La Fortuna and the Pacific coast, and the crossing from Arenal is the good part. Monteverde carries 12.8% of everything planned in Costa Rica on Stippl, third in the country. Put the jeep-boat-jeep across the lake into Stippl rather than the long drive around it.
Two nights. Most people give Monteverde 2 nights in the plans they build on Stippl, which covers one reserve with a guide and an afternoon of ziplines or a coffee farm. Three if you want a second reserve, the night walk or the canyoning as well.
Not from anywhere. Only 2.0% of Monteverde stops planned on Stippl are same-day, because the roads up are slow from every direction and the wildlife walks start not long after dawn. It is a two-night stop, or it is not worth the drive at all.
The forest. The town you will actually sleep in is Santa Elena, a few minutes down the hill, and almost everybody calls the whole area Monteverde anyway, hotels included. If a booking says Monteverde, check whether it means the reserve road or the town before you agree to it.
Curi-Cancha for wildlife, which is the one the guides quietly prefer. Monteverde Cloud Forest for the famous name and the suspension bridges. Santa Elena for quiet, and it usually takes walk-ins when the others are full. One reserve with a good guide beats two on your own.
Mid-February to June, with March and April the best of it, when the birds are nesting near the wild avocado trees the guides know by heart. They live here year-round but are far harder to find outside that window. A guide with a scope is the difference between seeing one and not.
