Playa del Carmen is a flat, walkable grid around one pedestrian avenue with the Cozumel ferry at the foot of it. Cozumel is forty minutes across for El Cielo's starfish sandbar and Punta Sur, bull sharks come to Shark Point between November and March at recreational depth, and the cenote highway south holds Azul, Cristalino and Jardín del Edén. Punta Esmeralda at the north end is the town's best beach, with a freshwater cenote spilling into the sea.
Two different holidays share this strip and the average describes neither. A quarter of the stays planned here are a single night and another quarter run four nights or more, the widest spread in Mexico: one is a ferry connection, the other is a fortnight's base. Playa is also the strongest avoidance of the capital either direction in the country, and its trips are the shortest Mexico trips there are.
Book the pier, not the town, and 2 nights is enough. The pier is the real product, so plan the days around Cozumel, the cenotes and the colectivos rather than around the town, which is honestly better connected than it is interesting. Skip Playa if you came looking for the real Mexico, because this is the Riviera at its most international, and skip the strip itself if you want quiet.

What our sources won't say
What our sources won't say, stated plainly: the Riviera's pattern of targeted violence around nightlife and the drug retail trade (documented for the corridor in this layer's Tulum and Cancún sources) applies to PDC's strip too, the 2022 incidents here went unmentioned by every source. The rules are the corridor's rules: no drugs, treat crowded nightlife as the residual-risk zone

As the best-connected town on the coast. Playa del Carmen opens 12.5% of the trips it appears in on Stippl, and the bus station and the Cozumel ferry sit two blocks apart in the middle of it. Put it into Stippl as a hinge rather than a destination.
Two nights. The Playa del Carmen stops planned on Stippl run to 2 nights, which is a day for Cozumel and a day for the beaches north of town. The resort version of the same place runs a week or more, and both are real.
Honestly, it divides people. 26.4% of Playa del Carmen stops planned on Stippl are a single night, which is the transit crowd, and the rest are longer beach stays. Fifth Avenue is a shopping street with a beach behind it. Walk north and it improves quickly.
Two operators run from the dock at Parque Fundadores, the crossing takes about forty minutes, and in practice the tickets are interchangeable. A ticket does not reserve a seat, so queue early in high season. Buy one-way tickets in each direction rather than a return, which ties you to one operator.
On Thirtieth Avenue and at the carts behind the big supermarket, a few blocks back from the tourist strip. Al pastor at the places with a queue at midnight, birria at the specialists who sell out by lunch. Not on Fifth Avenue, where you are mostly paying for the address.
Walk north. Punta Esmeralda, at the top of the town, is the consensus best, with fresh water seeping out of a shoreline cenote into the sea. Playacar to the south is the manicured alternative in front of the resorts. The central stretch is the one everybody complains about.
