Shkodër is the gateway to the Albanian Alps and every hotel in town sells the transport to prove it. It sits on Lake Shkodër, the largest lake in the Balkans, shared with Montenegro twenty-five kilometres away. Rozafa castle stands where the Buna and the Drin meet, carrying Illyrian, Roman, Venetian and Ottoman layers. The Marubi archive holds glass negatives from a studio founded in 1856, and the Komani ferry runs three hours through a flooded gorge that gets called one of the finest journeys in Europe.
People do not skip Shkodër and they do not stay in it either. It has the highest single-night share in Albania and the lowest share of day stops, which is what a base looks like when the thing you came for is somewhere else. The mountains are that thing: Valbonë and Theth are the two strongest affinities anywhere in the country, and nothing else in Shkodër's table clears its floor at all.
One night, and spend it arranging the next three. The Theth to Valbonë through-hike is organised from here in both directions, and so is the Komani boat. The hostel scene is the densest in Albania because of the hiking traffic, and the centre is flat enough that a bicycle works, which is rare here. Do not come for a beach: the lake is for cycling and fish restaurants, and the sea is twenty-five kilometres away and barely written about.

Anyone heading into the Alps
Shkodër is the logistical base for Valbonë, Theth and the Komani ferry, and there is no way round it.

Maybe not for you: anyone wanting a beach holiday, since the lake is for cycling and fish restaurants and the sea is 25 km away; and anyone planning a long stay, because one night on the way to the mountains is the norm.

Wet season
October to April
The wettest city in Europe by some counts, with the rain coming in long days rather than showers and the Alps above it closed or unreliable. The city itself works as normal.
Opening

Drying out, warm in the day and the lake at its highest. The high passes are not dependable yet, so May is for the city, the lake and the castle rather than the mountains.
Mountain season
June to August
Warm and mostly dry, and the only months when the Komani ferry, the Valbonë road and the pass to Theth all run properly. Shkodër is the base and the bus station for all of it.
September
September
Still warm and one of the busiest months for the city, but the rain returns hard. The pass is still open; the weather on it is not guaranteed.
- July is the month most travellers plan Shkodër for on Stippl, about 64 days ahead. The city is a night before the mountains for most, so the room that matters is the one in Valbonë or Theth, and those are the ones to book first.
- The Komani ferry runs from mid April to early November. The boat needs a booking in summer, the minibus from Shkodër to the dock leaves before dawn, and the two are usually sold as one ticket.
- The Valbonë to Theth pass is walkable from mid June to early October only. Snow sits on it either side, and in a late spring the guesthouses will tell you plainly that it is not open yet.
- Shkodër's rain comes in whole days, not showers. From October to April a wet day is a wet day; the castle and the Marubi photography museum are the two things worth doing in one.

Things to do in Shkoder
Rozafa Castle
Climb to the fortress where the Buna and Drin meet, with Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman layers and the legend of the young mother walled into its foundations, about €4. An hour, and the lake is laid out below.
The Marubi photography museum
Spend an hour in the archive of the Marubi studio, founded in 1856 by an Italian who settled here, the oldest photographic record of the Balkans, about €7. On the pedestrian street, closed Mondays.
The Komani Lake ferry
Take the three-hour boat through the flooded river gorge, one of the finest journeys in Europe and the standard approach to Valbonë, about €9. The minibus to the dock leaves before dawn and the two are sold as one ticket.
The Theth to Valbonë hike
Organise the through-hike over the pass between the two Alpine valleys from here, in either direction, with the guesthouses and the bag transfer booked by the agencies on the pedestrian street. Walkable from mid June to early October.
The Site of Witness and Memory
Spend an hour in the museum in the former secret-police prison, covering the communist era through the cells and the files, about €2. Closed Sundays.
Cycling to Shiroka
Ride the flat six kilometres along the lake to the fish restaurants at Shiroka, on a bike from any guesthouse for about €5 a day. The carp is the dish, and the sunset is over the lake.

The centre
Pedestrian boulevard, pastel facades
The pedestrianised Italianate boulevard and the square: restored pastel facades, pavement cafés, independent shops and the Marubi photography museum, with hotels above the cafés. For first visits and for the xhiro on Idromeno.

Parrucë
Backpacker quarter, bar street
The backpacker quarter just east of the centre: hostels, guesthouses and the bar street that fills after dark with Alps-bound hikers comparing routes. For budget travellers and anyone organising Theth.

Zdralë
Residential, parking, family guesthouses
A calmer residential area north of the centre with easier parking and family guesthouses, and the Site of Witness and Memory on its southern edge. For drivers and families.
Parking and quiet, and a fifteen-minute walk to the boulevard.
Shiroka
Lakeside village, fish tavernas
A lakeside village five kilometres west, strung along the shore with fish restaurants and a few guesthouses, on a flat cycling path from the city. For eating fish and for a night by the lake.

Where to stay in Shkoder
Stay in Parruce, the backpacker quarter east of the centre, where the hostels double as tour desks: the Komani minibus, the Theth furgon and luggage storage are all booked through your host. 55.2% of Shkoder stops planned on Stippl are a single night, and most people book it twice, once up and once down. June to August fills; the shoulder months do not.

Shkoder customs and what not to do
The Catholic centre
Shkodër is the country's Catholic city and the cathedral, the Franciscan church and the Ebu Bekr mosque stand within streets of each other; all are in use and want covered shoulders.
The xhiro is on Idromeno
The pedestrian street is the evening walk, and the cafés on it are where the town sits; a bicycle is how the town moves, so walk on the sides.
The bicycle is the vehicle
Shkodër is the flattest city in the country and everyone cycles, at walking pace, without helmets; rent one, ride slowly, and give way to the grandmothers.
Photographs are taken seriously
The Marubi museum holds a century of the country's photographic memory; the town is proud of it, and asking before photographing people here lands well.

Fun facts about Shkoder
The Marubi archive begins in 1856. That makes it older than most national photographic collections in Europe and by some distance the oldest in the Balkans.
The Rozafa legend names the parts of the woman left free. A breast to feed her child, an eye, a hand and a foot, when she was walled into the castle's foundations; the detail keeps the story alive.
Lake Shkodër is the largest lake in the Balkans. It is split between Albania and Montenegro, and the border runs across the water about 25 km from the city.
Every hotel in Shkodër sells transport to the Alps. The entire hiking infrastructure of northern Albania is organised from here, and on Stippl Valbonë and Theth are the only places planned alongside it.
A Catholic cathedral, an Orthodox cathedral and a mosque share the same streets. Shkodër is unusually mixed religiously, which is not the norm in Albania, and the three buildings stand within a short walk.
Shkodër is a cycling city by Albanian standards. Flat, lakeside, and with rental bikes that other Albanian towns lack, so the ride out to Shiroka on the lake is the standard afternoon.
Local tips for Shkoder
The ferry sets the stay
The minibus to the Komani ferry leaves around half past five and the boat at quarter to seven, which is why a Shkodër stay is one night. Book both as one ticket at the guesthouse.
Leave the big bag here
Accommodation expects to store luggage while you are in the mountains and treats it as a service, not a favour. Take a day pack over the pass; a mule carries the rest for about €30.
The direct minibus to Theth
Two and a half to three hours from the market area, about €10, and it does not need the ferry. The ferry is for the Valbonë side of the loop.
Most people stay one night
55.2% of stops are a single night, the highest in Albania: the night before the mountains. Stock up here; prices rise in the valleys and there is no ATM in Theth.
The pass is the risk
The Theth to Valbonë crossing is a full day at altitude with no facilities on the way, and it is closed outside mid June to early October. Shkodër itself is an easy town.
A faturë obliges the meter
Taxi overcharging is the standard tourist complaint here as everywhere in the country; ask for the receipt. The lake road to Shiroka is shared with traffic; cycle it in the morning.
Shkoder questions, answered
As the door to the Alps, at both ends of them. Shkoder carries 7.52% of everything planned in Albania on Stippl, because everyone heading for Theth or Valbona passes through it twice. Lay the mountain days out in Stippl first and let Shkoder take the nights on either side.
One night each way. Plans built on Stippl settle on 1 night for Shkoder, and almost nobody gives it two together. Rozafa castle, the Marubi photography archive and a bike ride out to the lake fill a comfortable day between the two mountain legs.
Almost always. Only 6.4% of Shkoder stops planned on Stippl are same-day, one of the lowest shares in the country, because the Komani ferry leaves early in the morning and you cannot get up here from Tirana in time. The night before is the whole point of the stop.
Book the boat online and arrange the connecting minibus through your guesthouse the night before, which is how everyone does it. The minibus collects from accommodation in Shkoder while it is still dark and drops you at the jetty. Turning up on the day works in shoulder season and not in August.
Do one each way. The Komani ferry runs up a flooded gorge to the Valbona side and is a sight in its own right; the direct minibus reaches Theth by road in about three hours. The standard loop is ferry in to Valbona, walk the pass to Theth, minibus back down to Shkoder.
Yes, for the view more than the ruins. It stands on a bluff where three rivers meet, so one turn on the walls takes in the lake, the Buna and the plain, and there is a small museum inside. It is a hot walk up, so take a taxi to the top and stroll down.
