Shkodër is the gateway to the Albanian Alps and every hotel in town sells the transport to prove it. It sits on Lake Shkodër, the largest lake in the Balkans, shared with Montenegro twenty-five kilometres away. Rozafa castle stands where the Buna and the Drin meet, carrying Illyrian, Roman, Venetian and Ottoman layers. The Marubi archive holds glass negatives from a studio founded in 1856, and the Komani ferry runs three hours through a flooded gorge that gets called one of the finest journeys in Europe.
People do not skip Shkodër and they do not stay in it either. It has the highest single-night share in Albania and the lowest share of day stops, which is what a base looks like when the thing you came for is somewhere else. The mountains are that thing: Valbonë and Theth are the two strongest affinities anywhere in the country, and nothing else in Shkodër's table clears its floor at all.
One night, and spend it arranging the next three. The Theth to Valbonë through-hike is organised from here in both directions, and so is the Komani boat. The hostel scene is the densest in Albania because of the hiking traffic, and the centre is flat enough that a bicycle works, which is rare here. Do not come for a beach: the lake is for cycling and fish restaurants, and the sea is twenty-five kilometres away and barely written about.

No destination in Albania has a sharper single relationship. Valbonë at 3.18× and Theth at 2.85× are the only two rows that clear Shkodër's mechanical floor; every other Albanian destination sits at or below it

The Komani ferry timetable is what shapes a stay here. The published schedule runs Shkodër–Koman at 06:45 and Koman–Shkodër at 15:45, both €8; the Valbonë–Fierzë boats run 10:30, 12:00 and 16:00. A bicycle is €14 and a motorbike €28
The minibus leaves at 05:30
The minibus to the ferry leaves before dawn, around 05:30, which is why a Shkodër stay is one night rather than two: you arrive, arrange transport with your host that evening, and leave in the morning
Luggage storage is standard
accommodation here expects it. Sources treat it as an expected service rather than a favour, because most guests are leaving for a multi-day hike and returning
Direct minibus to Theth
Shkodër to Theth is a direct minibus of two and a half to three hours and does not require the ferry route; the ferry is for the Valbonë side

The pass, not the city
The mountain hike is the real risk here, not the city. The Theth–Valbonë pass is a full day at altitude with no facilities on the crossing, and sources treat the weather window as the binding constraint
Shkoder questions, answered
As the door to the Alps, at both ends of them. Shkoder carries 7.52% of everything planned in Albania on Stippl, because everyone heading for Theth or Valbona passes through it twice. Lay the mountain days out in Stippl first and let Shkoder take the nights on either side.
One night each way. Plans built on Stippl settle on 1 night for Shkoder, and almost nobody gives it two together. Rozafa castle, the Marubi photography archive and a bike ride out to the lake fill a comfortable day between the two mountain legs.
Almost always. Only 6.4% of Shkoder stops planned on Stippl are same-day, one of the lowest shares in the country, because the Komani ferry leaves early in the morning and you cannot get up here from Tirana in time. The night before is the whole point of the stop.
Book the boat online and arrange the connecting minibus through your guesthouse the night before, which is how everyone does it. The minibus collects from accommodation in Shkoder while it is still dark and drops you at the jetty. Turning up on the day works in shoulder season and not in August.
Do one each way. The Komani ferry runs up a flooded gorge to the Valbona side and is a sight in its own right; the direct minibus reaches Theth by road in about three hours. The standard loop is ferry in to Valbona, walk the pass to Theth, minibus back down to Shkoder.
Yes, for the view more than the ruins. It stands on a bluff where three rivers meet, so one turn on the walls takes in the lake, the Buna and the plain, and there is a small museum inside. It is a hot walk up, so take a taxi to the top and stroll down.
