Krabi is a province rather than a town, and where you sleep matters more than what you see. The mainland gives you Ao Nang for the boats and Krabi Town for cheap beds, while Railay and Tonsai sit on a peninsula with no road, so a longtail is the only way in. What you come for is limestone: bolted climbing on Thaiwand Wall and 123 Wall, the 1,260 steps up Tiger Cave Temple, and Phra Nang Cave Beach. Most travellers give the province 3 nights on Stippl.
Nearly half of every Thailand trip runs through Krabi, which is not how the province is usually described. 48.9% of Thailand trips planned on Stippl carry a Krabi stop, so it is closer to a fixture of the standard route than the quieter alternative to Phuket it gets called. The boats are the reason: Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Phuket are each a ferry away, and Ao Nang is where those ferries leave from.
Four or five nights covers the province properly and three covers only the headline day. Give one day to the four-island longtail run out of Nopparat Thara, where a sandbar surfaces at low tide and you walk between Tup and Chicken Island, so the tide table shapes the day, not the operator. Give another to the Hong Islands lagoon, which runs all year, or to the Emerald Pool inland. Climb Tiger Cave at dawn: the staircase is fully exposed from halfway up.

- The Krabi-specific planning rule: weather here matters more than at a normal beach destination, because the trip is boat trips. A rainy afternoon is an inconvenience; a cancelled boat day is the trip
- Daytime maxima run 30.9–33.9 °C every month of the year, a spread of three degrees. Any "best time" framed as a temperature question is wrong. Rainfall swings fourteen-fold instead: 24 mm in February against 342 mm in August
- Rainfall variability is extreme, which limits how confidently anything can be promised: across the 30-year record August ranges from 92 mm to 676 mm and October from 48 mm to 552 mm. A dry-season week is close to a certainty; a wet-season week is a lottery
- Two independent official stations agree on the shape, Ko Lanta and Phuket both give driest Dec–Mar and wettest May–Oct with a September/October peak
- April–June is the value middle ground: hot, fewer crowds, lower prices, showers building
- together with Loh Samah and Lo Ko bays on Phi Phi Leh, and reopens 1 October. It was closed at this check. Two reasons, not one: ecological recovery and monsoon sea safety, the Loh Samah floating pier is not workable in southwest swell, which is exactly why the window sits on the roughest months. The park re-announces it annually
- The Maya Bay landing drops out of the itinerary and the rest of the day stays: Bamboo Island, Viking Cave, Pileh Lagoon, Phi Phi Don, Monkey Beach. Some operators suspend Phi Phi for the two months and push the Hong Islands and the 4-island tour instead, both of which run year-round. "Phi Phi is closed" is not true and never was
- for the breeding season of the endangered Gurney's pitta, a seasonal closure our sources do not carry at all
- Muslim-owned restaurants shift around suhoor and iftar, some closing by day and opening after dark; tourist-facing and Thai restaurants are unaffected. Ramadan 2027 is projected at roughly 8 February – 8 March 2027 with Eid al-Fitr around 9 March, subject to local moon sighting, which puts it inside Krabi's high season

the thing Krabi is world-famous for, and our sources never says more than "world-famous". It is limestone sport climbing on overhanging karst: 700+ bolted pitches, grades from about 5.6 to 5.14, with beginner terrain concentrated on 123 Wall, Muay Thai Wall and Hidden World, and the hard lines on Thaiwand Wall, Diamond Cave and Tonsai Tower. Schools take complete beginners on the beach, gear rents for about 500 THB a day, and courses include the transfer and boat from the mainland. Deep water soloing: ropeless climbing over the sea off Tonsai, jumping in at the top, is the local speciality at 2,400–3,600 THB for a session
The 4-island longtail day
Phra Nang Cave Beach, Chicken Island (Koh Gai), Tup and Poda, roughly 09:00 to 15:00 out of Nopparat Thara with lunch on a beach. The detail that makes it: a sandbar surfaces at low tide and you walk between Tup and Chicken Island, so the day's value depends on the tide table rather than the operator
The Hong Islands
the calmer, quieter alternative to Phi Phi, ~6 km offshore and about 20 minutes by boat: an enclosed lagoon you kayak into, white sand, karst walls, snorkelling. In Than Bok Khorani National Park at 300 THB, open 08:00–16:30, and it runs year-round, which is why operators push it during the Maya Bay closure
Phi Phi and Maya Bay, on the terms actually offered
a day trip, not a stay: five stops by shared speedboat from Ao Nang, with Pileh Lagoon rather than Maya Bay as the place you can actually swim. Maya Bay itself is a landing at Loh Samah's floating pier and a boardwalk across the island, one hour ashore, wading only to about knee depth, roughly 375–380 people at a time, and nothing at all from 1 August to 30 September
Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)
1,260 steps up a karst tower to a golden Buddha and a 360° view over the Krabi valley and out to the Andaman. The summit sign gives the numbers that matter more than the step count: 309 m of vertical over a 600 m path. Free, a working meditation centre rather than a monument, open from 05:00, and a dawn climb rather than a midday one, the staircase is fully exposed from about halfway
Khao Ngon Nak (Dragon Crest)
the region's proper hike: ~3.7 km each way from the Nong Thale trailhead, about two hours up and one down, four viewpoints and a ridge ending on an overhanging rock a few hundred metres above the sea. 200 THB, 08:00–15:00, sign in and out with the rangers

Krabi customs and what not to do
A third of Krabi is Muslim
The last provincially published census gives Buddhist 65.2% and Muslim 34.7%, essentially unchanged from the census before it. That data is 25 years old: Thailand's later censuses did not publish religion at provincial level in the same form, so use "about a third", not the decimal, for anything current-tense
And it is visibly uneven
Muslim communities concentrate in Ao Nang, Ao Nam Mao, the Paknam estuary and the Maharaj Road end of Krabi Town, and further out on Koh Lanta, which is majority Muslim. There are at least five mosques serving the Krabi Town and Ao Nang area, so you will hear the call to prayer, including at dawn, from beach accommodation: unremarkable to everyone who lives there
It changes little for you
halal food is everywhere and southern Thai-Muslim cooking is one of the region's real pleasures; pork is less ubiquitous; some restaurants serve no alcohol at all. Alcohol is freely available in the tourist areas of Ao Nang, Railay and Koh Lanta, and visitors are not expected to cover up or abstain on tourist beaches
Dress is beach versus village
not a rule about the province. Swimwear is fine on Ao Nang, Railay, Phra Nang and the tourist beaches. Cover shoulders and knees walking through villages, at the Paknam and fishing-village end of Krabi Town, near mosques, and in shops and markets off the strip. Topless sunbathing is not acceptable anywhere in Krabi, and this matters more here than on Phuket's main beaches
Phra Nang Cave is a shrine
the wooden phalluses there are offerings, not a joke. The cave is an active fertility shrine to Phra Nang, the princess-goddess the beach is named for: fishermen leave carvings for safe passage and a good catch, women leave offerings hoping to conceive, and Thai visitors come to pay respects. Photograph it with the restraint you would use in a temple, and know what you are walking into, because arriving unprepared is the actual failure mode
Tiger Cave is a working site
not a viewpoint with a temple attached, monks and nuns retreat there from across Thailand. Shoulders, chest and knees covered for men and women, enforced at the gate, with free sarongs if you turn up unprepared, and shoes off inside the shrine buildings
Wat Kaew is free, and Thai-only
many of the information boards at Wat Kaew Korawaram in Krabi Town are Thai-only, and entry is free
Bargaining is expected
at the Krabi Town markets and a smile does the work; walk the whole market before buying

- Take the first longtail of the morning to Railay and Phra Nang: four publishers independently say the same thing, from four different angles, and it is the strongest single tip in our sources
- Tell the boatman "Tonsai" on boarding if that is where you are going, or he continues to Railay
- Check the tide before anything: low tide for the Tup–Chicken sandbar, Susan Hoi and the Tonsai–Railay headland walk; high tide for the Blue Lagoon and for swimming at Tonsai
- Carry cash in small notes for longtails, market food and park fees, none of them take a card
- Cover up before Tiger Cave and before walking through a village, and carry a torch if you are up there for sunset
- Wash the red Railay mud off before going back to your room; some hotels charge for stained linen

- Don't feed or approach the macaques, at Tiger Cave, on Tonsai beach or in the Krabi Urban Forest: they steal, and a mother with young is genuinely aggressive
- Don't treat Phra Nang Cave's offerings as a photo joke
- Don't climb past the barriers at the Khao Ngon Nak overhang for a photograph
- Don't assume "the Krabi ferry" leaves from Ao Nang beach, it does not
- Don't plan a Maya Bay landing between 1 August and 30 September

Krabi is named for the krabi sword said to have been found when the area was cleared for settlement
Tonsai Beach has no pier, no road and no vehicles: ferries stop offshore and transfer you to a longtail, which puts you ashore on the sand
Susan Hoi, the Shell Fossil Beach, is roughly 200 m of fossilised shell beds cited at 25–40 million years old, and is said to be one of only three such sites in the world
The caves at Khao Khanab Nam, the twin karst towers flanking the river at Krabi Town, contain ancient human remains whose backstory the sources cannot agree on: trapped by rising floodwater, or victims of pirates
Krabi's hot springs are naturally hollowed bathtubs in smooth rock, fed at 35–42 °C from thermal chambers; so many people came that the authorities built artificial pools alongside and piped the water into them

There is no "Krabi pier"
the mistake costs people a morning. Six named embarkation points serve different things: Klong Jilad (~4 km from Krabi Town) is the main big-boat ferry port for Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Phuket; Nopparat Thara is the Ao Nang-side ferry pier and where most 4-island and Hong day tours leave; Ao Nam Mao runs longtails to Railay East and is the sheltered fallback; Khong Ka on the Krabi Town riverfront is a secondary Railay East longtail pier; Railay East Pier is the peninsula's counterpart. Ao Nang's own beach jetty is not a ferry pier: it is a beach with ticket booths where boats pull up on the sand
One system, three timetables
the three conflicting longtail frequencies are the same service described at three times of year. Ao Nang→Railay longtails run no timetable: they leave when about eight passengers are aboard. In high season that is every few minutes; in low season it is a 30–45 minute wait or a demand that you buy the empty seats. Ao Nam Mao is the one that approximates a schedule, roughly two-hourly from 09:00
Boarding is a wet landing.
Boats beach on sand and at low tide the water retreats far enough that you wade, sometimes to mid-calf. Flip-flops, and anything electronic in a dry bag. Landings are rerouted on sea state: a boat booked for Railay West may be put in at Phra Nang or Railay East instead
Longtails are public transport
they are how you reach Railay, Tonsai, Phra Nang and every offshore beach, and they are cash-only in small notes
The sea is the real exposure
worse here than at a normal beach, because the trip depends on boats. In the southwest monsoon longtails and speedboats cancel on swell, not on schedule; one Ao Nang operator's own estimate is roughly one day in five cancelled in June–August and one in three in September–October. Red flags on Ao Nang and Railay West mean rip currents, and box jellyfish are a real if uncommon Andaman risk in the wet season: treat beach vinegar stations as a signal
Monkeys are the top hazard
macaques on the Tiger Cave staircase and on Tonsai beach steal sunglasses, caps, water bottles and anything held in a hand. Bags closed, nothing loose, no feeding, and ignore them

By working out what you want to be able to walk to, because the province has four very different bases. Lay the nights out in Stippl against the boat times rather than the map, since Railay has no road and everything there arrives by longtail. Then ask people who have stayed in each, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism or the Facebook groups.
Earlier than most of Thailand. Travellers leave 81 days between planning a Krabi stop on Stippl and turning up, and the cool season from November to March is when almost everyone comes. Railay fills first, because nothing much can be built on a peninsula that has no road onto it.
For most of the year, though not on the terms the photograph suggests. Maya Bay closes completely from the start of August to the end of September, and when it is open you land at a pier on the far side of the island, walk a boardwalk across and wade to about knee depth. Nobody swims there now.
The plans say so: only 17.0% of Krabi stops planned on Stippl are a single night. One night buys you a boat day or the Tiger Cave climb and not both, and the province holds at least four days once you count the inland pools, the peninsula and a second island run.
By longtail boat, and only by longtail boat. There is no road onto the peninsula, so boats run from Ao Nang and from the Khlong Chilat pier at Krabi Town, and they leave when they fill rather than to a timetable. Build that into any day where you have a flight or a ferry to catch.
More often than almost anywhere else in the country: 13.5% of the trips that include Krabi on Stippl plan it twice. That is the ferry hub doing its work, because Phi Phi and Koh Lanta both send you back through Krabi rather than onward to somewhere new.
