Theth is a village of stone houses and pasture in a high valley of the Accursed Mountains, with the peaks directly above it. It is one end of the Valbonë pass, the best-known walk in the country: fifteen to seventeen kilometres, six to eight hours, about a thousand metres of climbing. The Blue Eye of Theth is a turquoise spring pool up-valley and not the famous one near Sarandë. The lock-in tower is four centuries old and is where men under blood feud sheltered.
Nobody passes through Theth. Fewer than five stops in a hundred here carry no night, the lowest in Albania against roughly one in seven nationally, because two and a half hours up a mountain road enforces the overnight. Valbonë is its pair by a wide margin, the largest lift measured anywhere in the country, and Durrës on the resort coast is the one Albanian pairing that reads below chance: the Alps and the Adriatic are different trips.
Two nights, and book a guesthouse on half board because there is nowhere else to eat. The walk over the pass goes in either direction and Shkodër arranges it from below. Grunas waterfall is forty-five minutes from the village if you want a shorter day. Come in the four summer months, which carry three quarters of the year here, and stay away in winter, when three months average below freezing and the village largely closes.

Furgons from Shkodër
Furgons leave Shkodër around 08:00 and 14:00 from the market area, cost about €10 and take two to two and a half hours
The SH21 is paved now
The SH21 is now paved for the route. This is recent, and older guides still describe a rough mountain track, so the change makes ordinary cars viable where they were not
The pass hike
The Valbonë pass hike runs 15–17 km with 900–1,000 m of ascent, and sources put it at 6–8 hours for most walkers, one gives 5–10 depending on fitness
The northern loop
The full northern loop is Shkodër → Koman ferry → Fierzë → Valbonë → pass → Theth → Shkodër, usually over three or four days
A full mountain day
The pass hike is a full mountain day and should be treated as one. 900–1,000 m of ascent, no facilities on the crossing, and weather that changes

Snow can lie on the pass into May and closes it outside the summer window entirely
Theth questions, answered
As a fixed three-day block, because the transport only works one way round: ferry up to Valbona, walk the pass to Theth, minibus out to Shkoder. Theth carries 3.76% of everything planned in Albania on Stippl, and its beds fill through summer, so book those before you lay the days into Stippl.
Two. 2 nights is the normal stay in the Theth stops planned on Stippl, and the pattern is the same for almost everybody: arrive, walk the pass or the valley's own Blue Eye the next day, leave. A third night is for the Grunas waterfall and doing nothing much.
Not sensibly, and almost nobody tries: 4.6% of Theth stops planned on Stippl are same-day, the lowest share in Albania. The road in takes two to three hours from Shkoder on a mountain track, so a day trip means five hours of driving for a couple of hours in the valley.
A full mountain day rather than a technical one. Fifteen to seventeen kilometres, six to eight hours for most walkers, and around a thousand metres of climbing whichever way you go. There is no scrambling and the route is waymarked, but there is no shade on the upper section either.
Most people go Valbona to Theth, because it fits the ferry in and the minibus out. Both directions work and both are hard; the Valbona side has the steeper start, so walking that way gets the climbing done early. Guesthouses at either end will move your bag over for a fee.
No. The one in the photographs is near Sarande, at the far end of the country. Theth has its own, up the valley, and it is a two to three hour walk each way through the forest to a cold pool under a waterfall. Quieter, colder, and worth the morning.
