The airport is the city's quiet advantage. Fukuoka Airport sits about five minutes by subway from Hakata Station on the Kuko line, which makes it one of the most centrally located airports in the country, [official:fukuoka-airport.jp, official:japan-guide.com, official:japan-experience.com]
Hakata is the station, the port and half the city, and travellers use the two names loosely. In our own data they do not: Hakata carries 34 stop records against Fukuoka's 10,820, so people write Fukuoka.

Mid March to May
Cherry blossom from late March, a little ahead of Tokyo but not by the fortnight the guides claim, and warm dry weeks after it. The heavier of the two shoulders here, and the better one for the yatai stalls.
Rainy season and summer
June to August
June is the rainy season and the one month to avoid outright; July brings the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, and August is the hottest month, humid and still. The beaches at Itoshima and the Nokonoshima ferry are the summer plan.
Autumn
October and November
October is the busiest month in our own data and the best weather of the year; November brings the autumn colour and the Grand Sumo Tournament, and the two together fill the Hakata hotels.
Winter
December to February
Cool, grey and quiet, with the yatai open every night and the hot springs at Beppu and Yufuin a train ride away. The cheapest months, and the fugu season.
- October is the month most travellers plan Fukuoka for on Stippl, and Japan as a whole is planned about 107 days ahead. Only 9.0% of Japan plans are made inside a fortnight; Fukuoka's hotels take a late decision in every month but the sumo one.
- The Grand Sumo Tournament comes to Fukuoka in November, and tickets are released around mid September. The fifteen days fill the sumo hall and the Hakata hotels; the box seats go in the first hour and the cheaper seats a few weeks later.
- Hakata Gion Yamakasa runs the first fifteen days of July, and the climax is the race at dawn on the fifteenth. Seven teams run one-tonne floats through the streets from Kushida shrine at five in the morning; the hotels around Nakasu are booked by the spring.
- The claim that Kyushu blooms well before Tokyo is overstated. Fukuoka's blossom opens in late March, days rather than weeks ahead of Honshu; Maizuru Park by the castle ruins is the spot, and the timing is watched, not booked.

Eat at one of the street stalls along the Nakasu river and Tenjin after eight, the one thing the city is for: tonkotsu ramen, yakitori and a beer at a counter of eight seats for about €15. They open at six and pack out by nine.
Dazaifu Tenmangu
Take the train thirty minutes out to the shrine of the god of learning, where students come before exams, and eat the grilled umegae mochi on the approach. Free, and the plum trees bloom in February.
Ohori Park and the castle ruins
Walk the lake loop and climb to the Fukuoka Castle ruins in Maizuru Park beside it, the city's best sunset spot and free. Twenty minutes from Tenjin on foot or two stops on the metro.
teamLab Forest
Spend two hours in the digital-art installation at the Boss E Zo stadium complex, about €14. Smaller than the Tokyo sites and rarely sold out, which is the point.
Nanzoin's reclining Buddha
Take the train twenty-five minutes to one of the largest bronze statues in the world, forty-one metres long, in a temple in the hills. Free, and a dress code is enforced: cover the shoulders and knees.
A day trip to Mount Aso
Drive or take the train and bus to the active volcano in the middle of Kyushu, about three hours each way; the crater rim opens when the gas levels allow. A long day, and the one that shows what the island is made of.

Less English than Kyoto
Fukuoka is a working city rather than a tourist one, and menus and signage reflect that.

- Carry cash, because the stalls do not take cards.
- Buy mentaiko at the station if you want the local souvenir.

- Do not expect Kyoto's density of sights; Fukuoka is a city to eat in.
- Do not assume the fast ferry to Busan is running without checking the operator.

Leuke weetjes over Fukuoka
Fukuoka has more yatai than the rest of Japan combined, around a hundred of them, and they are assembled and dismantled every day.
Tonkotsu ramen was invented here, and Hakata-style thin straight noodles with it.
The airport is five minutes from the main station, which is close to unique among large Japanese cities.
South Korea is planned with Fukuoka far more often than with Japan generally. The share is 26.6% of Fukuoka trips, a lift of 1.87, while Thailand and Vietnam both run below the national rate. Fukuoka is not a more international stop, it is a more Korean one.

Five minutes from the airport
The airport connects to Hakata Station by subway on the Kuko line, two stops, which is unusual for a Japanese city. There is no need for a taxi.
Three subway lines are enough
They cover Hakata, Tenjin, Ohori Park and the airport, and most of the city is walkable between them. A day pass is about €4.
The shinkansen ends here
Two hours to Hiroshima, four to Osaka, seven to Tokyo, and Fukuoka sits on the 14-day and 21-day rail-pass routes rather than the 7-day one. Fly in and train out.
How long to stay
Most people give Fukuoka 2 nights on Stippl: one is the yatai and the temple, two adds Dazaifu or Nanzoin. It is the door to Kyushu more than a stay.
Nakasu carries ordinary caution
It is the nightlife island and the yatai are on its river bank; the touts are on its side streets. The city otherwise has no warning of any kind.
Korea is a ferry away
The overnight Camellia Line runs Hakata Port to Busan in about eleven hours, about €80. Check whether the fast daytime service is running before you plan on it.

Two nights is what most people give it, and in our own data two nights is the mode at 35.6%, above the one-night share.
It is a food city rather than a sights city. If you want yatai, tonkotsu ramen and a cheaper major city, yes; if you want temples and headline sights on a first week in Japan, it will not reach your itinerary.

About five minutes by subway to Hakata Station, which makes it one of the most centrally located airports in Japan.
Spring and autumn, and both are busier here than they are nationally. June is the rainy season and the month to avoid.
