Koh Tao is where people learn to dive, and the whole island is arranged around that. An Open Water course runs three days, so the rhythm is early boats and early nights and the social life follows it. Around the diving there is sunset on Sairee, the white sandbars of Koh Nang Yuan a few minutes off the north-west coast, blacktip reef sharks at Shark Bay and the scramble up John Suwan for the double-bay view. 29.5% of Thailand trips planned on Stippl include the island.
Koh Tao holds people longer than any other major place in Thailand, and the course is why. Most travellers give it 4 nights on Stippl, where the country as a whole runs to three, and only 12.0% of stops here are a single night. Three of those four days are the certification, which is a commitment you make before you arrive rather than a decision you take on the beach.
Give it four nights if you are diving and three if you are not. A non-diving stay is the east-coast scooter loop with the cliff jump at Tanote Bay, a morning at Koh Nang Yuan before the boats arrive, and the climb to John Suwan in real shoes. Certified divers aim at Chumphon Pinnacle and Sail Rock for the big animals, and at the wrecks if artificial reefs interest you. Come between February and April for the calmest water, and not from late October to December, when the Gulf monsoon peaks.

- National festivals (Songkran, Loy Krathong, the Full Moon Party on neighbouring Koh Phangan) are not island-specific; Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party is a standard mid-course excursion from Koh Tao
- The Gulf monsoon is inverted against the Andaman coast, and this is the single most common Thailand planning mistake. TMD itself: the northeast monsoon (mid-October to mid-February) "causes mild weather and abundant rain along the eastern coast" of the south, exactly Koh Tao's coast, while the southwest monsoon (mid-May to mid-October) is what soaks Phuket and Krabi. FCDO says the same in traveller language: the south-east's rainy season is November–March
- Underwater visibility peaks July–September (up to ~30 m), the best diving window is not the same as the best weather window
- Jellyfish season is sometimes given as December–January, and that rests on one unverified claim
- Blacktip reef sharks are present year-round; odds are best in the early morning or late afternoon, and the technique is stillness, they spook easily

the reason most people come: 3 days, 9,900–13,000 THB, warm low-current water, and since April 2025 a legal cap of 4 students per instructor. The island's whole social rhythm, early boats, early nights in the dive hostels, is built around it

since 22 April 2025 much of it is law: stay ≥2 m off coral, no touching or handling marine life (guides included), no fish feeding, no littering, no anchoring over reef
The locals are dive expats
instructors and long-term expats function as the island's de facto local community; the service economy is largely foreign-run, on an island whose Thai population is small
Much of it is private land
viewpoints and several beaches sit on it, the entry fees and buy-a-drink rules follow from that, and haggling them is not done; longtail fares to Koh Nang Yuan are fixed
The temple is free
Wat Koh Tao, the island's modern one (built 2018), is free to enter; shoulders and knees covered

all Lomprayah fares and times above are read from the operator's own published tariff effective 1 August 2026 (Phangan 800, Samui 700–850, Chumphon 450–750 THB); Songserm's published timetable gives Phangan→Koh Tao at 500–600 THB. These are operator prices, not aggregator prices
Three operators serve Mae Haad
Lomprayah (high-speed catamarans, the Bangkok through-product), Songserm (express boats), and Seatran Discovery (Samui–Phangan–Koh Tao). Seatran's site publishes no readable tariff, its ~600 THB Samui fare is third-party and indicative only
The quoted ferry times are optimistic
"Koh Samui (2 hrs)" is the figure you will see, and the operator's own timetable shows ~3 h on the fastest sailing; "Surat Thani (3 hrs)", the real journey is a 4¾–5½ h bus+boat combination; and the "night boat from Bangkok via Surat Thani" is actually a night bus to Chumphon plus a morning catamaran (the classic slow night boat runs from Chumphon, not from Bangkok)
Cancellation is a safety order
provincial, not an operator decision. When TMD issues a rough-sea warning ("small boats should keep ashore", waves 2–3 m+), the provincial governor orders all vessels to stay in port, as documented in July 2022, when the Surat Thani governor halted every island ferry. You cannot appeal it, and it clusters in the November–December monsoon
Diving rules are statute now
they have applied since 22 April 2025 (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, under the Marine and Coastal Resources Management Act, in force five years): every dive trip must carry a certified dive supervisor; ratios are legally fixed at 1:2 for introductory try-dives, 1:4 for course instruction and deep dives, 1:20 for snorkelling; cameras are banned on training dives unless the diver holds Advanced Open Water or 40+ logged dives; snorkellers near reef must wear life vests unless freedive-certified; divers must stay ≥2 m off coral. The enforcement lever is the operating licence, operators and supervisors who fail to enforce can have it revoked
The FCDO list is for beginners
"Diving schools may have limited resources and do not always observe safety and maintenance standards." Check the operator's credentials; check your own insurance policy's instructor-qualification and depth requirements; physically inspect the safety equipment; confirm oxygen is carried on the boat; and have them state the emergency procedure including hyperbaric-chamber access

Decide first whether you are diving, because a course fixes three days and everything else moves around it. Lay the Gulf islands out in Stippl and read the boat times between them rather than the distances. Then ask people who have taken a course here, in subreddits like r/ThailandTourism or the Facebook groups.
Almost always: 73.6% of the trips that include Koh Tao on Stippl also carry Koh Samui, and most of those pick up Koh Phangan on the way. The three sit within a couple of hours of each other by boat, and the ferry timetables are built around doing exactly that run.
No, though you will be in a minority here. The east-coast scooter loop, the cliff jump at Tanote Bay, a morning on Koh Nang Yuan and the John Suwan scramble fill two or three days on their own, and the snorkelling at Shark Bay puts you over blacktip reef sharks without a tank.
Three days of theory, pool sessions and open-water dives, with a legal cap of four students to one instructor since the national rules changed. The water here is warm and low-current, which is why the island became the place people certify. Book it before the rest of the stop, because the course sets the days rather than fitting around them.
None, so you arrive by boat whatever else you do. Catamarans run from Chumphon in about an hour and a half, from Koh Phangan in around two hours and from Koh Samui in about three. 92.8% of Koh Tao stops planned on Stippl sit in the middle of a route, which is the boats deciding rather than the travellers.
February to April, with June to September as the value window when prices drop and the diving holds up. What to avoid is late October to December, when the Gulf monsoon peaks and boats get cancelled. Travellers leave 80 days between planning a Koh Tao stop on Stippl and arriving, which is time enough to pick the month.
