Canggu is five kilometres of former rice paddy on the south-west coast, and you come to surf, eat and work. Batu Bolong is the forgiving beach break where most people catch a first wave, Echo is the step up, and the sand is black volcanic rather than white. La Brisa runs a Sunday farmers' market, the lanes between Pererenan and Seseh are working paddy five minutes off the strip, and Tanah Lot is half an hour north-west at sunset. Most travellers give Canggu 3 nights.
Canggu is the cheapest bed of Bali's big three, which is the opposite of what its guidebooks say. A room booked here runs €133.50 against Uluwatu's €163.09 and Ubud's €176.32, on the same three-night stay. The reputation for expense is about the cafés and the beach clubs, not the room, and one in three Indonesian trips on Stippl passes through anyway.
So base yourself here for the food and the surf, and go elsewhere to look at Bali. A scooter beats a car on a five-kilometre strip that is gridlocked most afternoons, and the four villages, Batu Bolong, Berawa, Echo Beach and Pererenan, are one place as far as you are concerned. Skip Canggu if you want a beautiful beach or a swim, because the sand is dark and the rips are real, and skip it if you want sights, because they all leave the area.

- Canggu's calendar is weekly rather than annual, and this is the destination-specific fact. Every venue has its night, and one publisher lists the rotation outright: Luigi's on Monday, The Shady Pig on Tuesday, Old Man's on Wednesday and Saturday, The Lawn on Friday, La Brisa most Saturdays, DEUS on Sunday, and one beach bar every night
- La Brisa's Sunday farmers' market is the other weekly fixture, run by a beach club and built around local producers and makers
- Hotel Tugu's cultural evening, Thursdays at 19:30, stages older Balinese dance and music rather than the standard tourist Legong, the one genuinely cultural evening on the strip
- Nyepi (March, date shifts yearly) closes the island for 24 hours, airport included, and on Canggu's strip that means no scooter, no beach and no bars
- Canggu sits between Ubud and Uluwatu on rain: 1,642 mm a year against Ubud's 2,400 and Uluwatu's 1,508. The coast is drier than the interior and the Bukit is drier still

Canggu customs and what not to do
Hinduism runs under the strip
Balinese Hinduism is still the daily framework here even though the strip does not look like it: canang sari offerings appear on shop counters and doorsteps by early morning, and temple ceremonies close roads. Walk around the offerings
Surf etiquette is the etiquette
the one that will actually get you into trouble. Batu Bolong is crowded with beginners and the line-up rules still apply; dropping in is the fastest way to a bad session
Canggu costs its own village
sources are unusually direct about it, and it is worth carrying rather than smoothing over: rice paddies built into villas, roads that cannot take the traffic, and a strip where the working language is English. Two publishers who loved it in 2019 say so about 2026

Beach plastic is seasonal
a wet-season fact, not a complaint. Bali's rivers wash it onto the west-coast beaches from November to March, and our sources ask visitors to carry a refillable bottle rather than to be surprised

- Book a street back from the beach road: cheaper and quieter, and still a five-minute walk
- Ask for the monthly rate on a scooter or a villa if you are staying more than two weeks

The scooter, unanimously
The strip is five kilometres long, there is no public transport, and cars are materially slower than bikes on these roads. Rental runs 60,000–100,000 IDR a day, with one publisher paying 2,800,000 IDR (about €145) for four weeks, a monthly rate worth asking for

Batu Bolong gridlock
The Batu Bolong road is gridlocked most afternoons, and our own data's own record says the congestion is a post-2020 change rather than a permanent feature. Plan around it or ride around it
Rip-prone beaches
The sea is the risk and our sources do not raise it. Canggu's beaches: Batu Bolong, Echo and Berawa, are rip-prone black-sand surf beaches, and independent guides to Bali's swimming safety rate the Canggu, Echo and Batu Bolong stretch high-risk with deaths documented. A French tourist drowned off Batu Bolong despite rescue attempts by locals. Swim between the flags where there are flags, and not at all where there are none
The road is the other one.
Indonesia requires a valid motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit; Bali police check both at roadside stops and rental shops do not, and riding unlicensed voids most travel insurance. More than 70% of Indonesian road deaths involve a motorbike. Canggu's specific aggravators are volume: the strip is one of the densest scooter environments on the island, narrow lanes, and a nightlife economy that puts people on bikes after drinking
Canggu questions, answered
Pick your end of the strip and get a scooter. It runs five kilometres with no public transport, so where you sleep decides your days. Almost nobody treats it as a day out: only 1.83% of Canggu stops planned on Stippl are same-day. Put Batu Bolong, Berawa or Pererenan into Stippl and stay put.
Two or three to see it, a week or a month if you are working. Most people give Canggu 3 nights in the plans they build on Stippl. There is very little here to visit: it is a place to surf, eat, work and go out, and that takes as long as you give it.
Just 16.34% of the Canggu stops on Stippl come to one night, because nothing here rewards being efficient. A surf lesson is a morning, the traffic eats the middle of the day, and the strip is at its best in the evening. Two nights is the sensible floor.
They are black volcanic sand and they are surf beaches, and nobody pretends otherwise. For white sand you go to Uluwatu, Amed or the Nusa islands. What Canggu's beaches are for is the surf, the sunset and the bars behind them, and on those terms they are very good indeed.
Carefully, and between the flags. This stretch is rip-prone with drownings on record, including off Batu Bolong, and the shore break is heavier than it looks from a sunbed. It is a place to surf rather than to swim. If you want calm water, Sanur is on the other coast.
It is the best on Bali for it. Batu Bolong is a forgiving beach break with a sandy bottom and a row of schools behind it, and lessons run all day for very little. Echo Beach is the step up once you can stand. Go at low tide in the morning, before the crowd arrives.
