Byron Bay is the most easterly point of mainland Australia, and the lighthouse walk at sunrise is the reason to set an alarm. The loop runs three and a half kilometres past the cape, with koalas in the eucalypts if you are early enough, and it costs nothing. The Pass is the point break everyone is working towards and Main Beach is where the lessons happen. Whales pass between June and November, close enough to watch from the cape with binoculars and no boat at all.
Byron Bay is the closest thing Australia has to a destination people choose rather than pass. Barely one stop in a hundred here carries no night, the lowest rate of any large Australian destination and a tenth of Brisbane's. Byron Bay and Brisbane also function as one planning unit: a hundred and sixty-five kilometres apart, and each is the other's strongest ordinary partner.
Byron works at 3 nights, and at more than that if you want the shire behind it. Killen Falls has a cave behind the water, Minyon drops about a hundred metres in Nightcap, and Nimbin is the counterculture village that came out of the 1973 Aquarius Festival. You will want a car for any of it. Skip Byron in the January school holidays without a booking, and skip it entirely if you are counting money, because the town is not cheap.

- Winter is the value season and the whale season at once, with bigger surf and some businesses on reduced hours

- Bluesfest at Tyagarah over Easter is the surviving major festival

As a stop you deliberately slow down in. Trips that include Byron Bay run 53 days on Stippl, among the longest in Australia, because it belongs to working-holiday and long-run itineraries rather than fortnights. Put three nights into Stippl with a hinterland day among them.
Three. 3 nights is the normal stay in the Byron Bay stops planned on Stippl, which covers the lighthouse walk out to the cape, a surf lesson and one long slow beach day. Longer if the hinterland, Nimbin and the waterfalls are going in too.
Almost nobody does it: only 17.1% of Byron Bay stops planned on Stippl are a single night, one of the lowest shares in Australia. The town runs on a slow rhythm, sunrise at the cape and sunset on the beach, and one night gets you neither of them properly.
Yes, and it is one of the best land-based spots on the coast. Cape Byron, Captain Cook Lookout and Tallows Beach all look straight out over the migration route, and humpbacks pass from around June to November. Take binoculars and go in the morning, when the water is flattest.
Changed, developed, crowded and a great deal more expensive, and every guide says so. The energy is still there in the markets, the hinterland towns and the early morning beach, and it now sits alongside boutique hotels and a serious housing crisis. Go inland to Bangalow or Mullumbimby for the older version.
No. The summit track has been closed for years and the traditional owners ask that people do not climb it, regardless of what an article with a recent date on it tells you. There are alternatives with the same views inland: Minyon Falls and the Nightcap range are the usual answer.
