Nusa Penida is a dry limestone island forty minutes off Bali, and its whole appeal is a coastline you mostly cannot swim. Kelingking is the headland on every poster, with a near-vertical descent to a beach the sea makes dangerous. Broken Beach is a collapsed arch you walk over, Angel's Billabong a tidal pool the tide decides on, and Diamond and Atuh sit at the foot of staircases cut into the cliff. Manta rays feed at Manta Point year round, and mola mola come up between July and October.
Almost nobody starts a trip on Nusa Penida. Around three in a hundred of the trips that carry it open there, the lowest opening share we measure in the country, because there is no airport and the only way in is a boat from a Balinese beach. Travellers also decide on it late: 72 days of lead time, the shortest in Indonesia.
So stay 2 nights rather than day-tripping, and be at Kelingking before the boats land. The island empties after the last ferry, which is the version worth having, and the roads are steep and slow enough that sights which look adjacent are three quarters of an hour apart. Crystal Bay and Atuh are where you actually swim. Skip Nusa Penida if you are a nervous scooter rider or you came for a lounger.

- The island is dry in a way Bali is not. It is a karst island with genuine surface-water scarcity, and its landscape is scrub and limestone rather than rice terrace. Published research puts its multi-year mean rainfall at ~1,247 mm with years as low as 589 mm
- Nyepi Laut: "Sea Silence Day", is the fact most likely to strand you, and it is specific to these islands. For 24 hours no boat sails to, from or between Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan, and no snorkelling or diving is permitted. our sources give the next occurrence as 27 September 2026. It is set by the Balinese calendar (the fourth full moon) and moves every year; other sources give October dates for other years, so confirm before booking a late-September crossing
- Bali's own Nyepi in March also stops the boats, because it stops everything
- Goa Giri Putri and the island's other temples take Balinese pilgrims on their own festival calendar; both men and women need a sarong at the temple and at the Peguyangan waterfall, and one can be hired at the entrance

A Balinese Hindu island
a sacred one at that. The etiquette of applies in full: sarongs at temples, do not step on offerings, do not enter inner courtyards as a sightseer
Two sites need a sarong
Peguyangan waterfall and Goa Giri Putri, men and women both, and can be hired at the entrance for a small fee. Both are working religious sites that happen to be spectacular
The black magic is believed
the island's reputation for it is a live belief among Balinese, not folklore for visitors. Treat the temples accordingly
It is poorer than Bali
the island is, and its infrastructure is younger. Waste, water and road pressure are all visibly strained by the visitor numbers

Fast boat from Sanur
The fast boat from Sanur is how essentially everyone arrives, and at 35–45 minutes it is short enough that a day trip is genuinely possible, which is exactly why the island has a day-tripper problem
Three ways around
Getting around costs one of three ways: a scooter at 80,000–100,000 IDR a day; a shared van tour at about 500,000 IDR for one coast; or a private car with driver, boat, transfers and entry fees from 750,000 IDR (~€43), which splits well between three or four. Our own data gives 350,000 IDR for a driver alone
Scooters: think twice
Three publishers advise against renting a scooter unless you already ride confidently in Asia, and one of them refuses to recommend it at all because of the narrow roads and fast cars. This is a stronger warning than the equivalent for Bali, and it is about the road surface rather than the traffic
Journey times, not distances.
Kelingking to Broken Beach is 45 minutes; the harbour to Diamond Beach is an hour. The advice is to pin your stops in Google Maps in advance and group them by coast
Drownings on these beaches
People die on this island's beaches, and this is the largest gap between what our sources say and what is true. Our sources warn about "strong currents" at four separate beaches. What the live pass finds is a pattern of fatalities: a group swept out to sea at Kelingking with one death and two injured; a man killed by a wave at the same beach; a British visitor found unconscious in the water; national coverage of five tourist deaths on the island. Kelingking's descent is locally known as the "stairway of death"
No lifeguard, no signal
The specific mechanism is a shorebreak on a beach with no lifeguard, no phone signal in places, and a 45-minute climb to any help. One publisher writes of Diamond Beach that "it is a new, unknown spot and there is no help down here". Treat every beach at the foot of a cliff here as unsupervised open ocean
Nusa Penida questions, answered
Stay, and pick one base. The coasts are an hour of bad road apart, so a day trip buys you one of them in a queue. Only 3.05% of the trips including Nusa Penida start here on Stippl, so it is a stop off Bali rather than an arrival point. Put two nights and a driver into Stippl.
Two nights, to see both coasts properly. The Nusa Penida stops planned on Stippl run to 2 nights. One day for the west, Kelingking and Broken Beach, one for the east, Diamond Beach and Atuh, and the roads between them are slow.
A stay, on the unanimous recommendation of everyone who has done both. Hardly ever, and 20.94% of Nusa Penida stops planned on Stippl are the exception at one night. The boat, the transfer and the queue at Kelingking eat a day trip whole, and you go home having seen one viewpoint.
No. People have died on that descent and in that water, and the current at the bottom is serious. The famous beaches here are for looking at from the cliff. Crystal Bay and Atuh are the ones to swim at, and even there you check the conditions before you get in.
Only if you already ride confidently in Asia. The roads here are worse than Bali's: steep, broken and narrow, with drops and no barriers, and the hire bikes are tired. A driver for the day costs little and removes the whole problem, which is what most people end up doing.
July to October, when the cold upwelling brings them up to the cleaning stations, at depths that mean divers see them properly and snorkellers occasionally get lucky. The same water is colder than the latitude suggests, so take a thicker wetsuit. Book with a dive shop, not a boat tour.
