Koh Rong is seventy-eight square kilometres of jungle and white sand with almost no roads on it, and two reputations stacked on top of each other. Koh Touch is where the ferry lands and where the bars, the hostels and the one dive shop are. Twenty minutes up the sand, Long Set is empty before nine. The bioluminescent plankton is what everybody names first, best on a dark beach near a new moon, and the full-day boat tour ends by swimming through it on the way home.
Nowhere else in Cambodia do travellers stop moving the way they do here. A quarter of the stays planned here run five nights or more, against one in ten in Siem Reap, and the island closes the trips it appears on nearly three times as often as it opens them. Its real companions are the south coast and nothing else: Kampot lifts higher against it than any other pairing in the country.
Decide which island you booked, then hand it 3 nights. Koh Touch is the bar strip and the north and west coasts have no shops, no nightlife and often no signal. Take cash, because there is no machine, and expect the power off for part of most days. Avoid May to August, when the coast takes several times the rain the inland does, and skip the island entirely if you need reliable medical care.

A working island too
Koh Rong is not only a resort one. Fishing villages on the north coast, families who have converted rooms in their houses, and a local economy that predates the bars
Cover up away from the beach.
Cambodia is conservative; swimwear in the village or at the pagoda is not
Take your rubbish home
off the beach. Two sources raise litter unprompted, and one names a volunteer organisation that runs beach clean-ups weekly
Cannabis is illegal here
but openly sold on Koh Touch. "Happy" shakes and cookies are on menus along the strip. The law has not changed; the enforcement is what is inconsistent
Do not swim near the pier.
One source records getting sick and attributes it to the sewage outfall there

- Bring a power bank and tell people you may be offline
- Ask your accommodation which boat tour to take. One source's best day came from the operator their guesthouse's neighbours ran, not from the big tours sold on the strip

- Don't assume the ferry will run in the monsoon. Build a spare day into the plan between June and September

The island is reported as 70% held by a single investor group on a 99-year lease, with plans that have included a ring road, resorts and an airstrip. One publisher states it outright; it is corroborated sideways by the fact that visitkohrong.com: the site that ranks first for almost every Koh Rong search and reads as an independent island guide, is operated by Royal Group Koh Rong Development, the same consortium. Every source recommends fixing only the outbound date; the return is then whenever you decide to leave, which is the point of the island
Short crossing, unreliable
The crossing is short in good weather and unreliable in bad. Quoted durations run 30β60 minutes and the variation is the boat, the pier and the sea, not a source conflict
It all goes via Sihanoukville
There is no ferry from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. You go to Sihanoukville and get on a boat there; the "how to get to Koh Rong" question is really "how to get to Sihanoukville"
Boat incidents on record
Boat incidents are on the record, repeatedly. A tourist boat capsized off Koh Rong in strong waves in February 2018 and a passenger drowned; eighteen tourists were rescued from a sinking ferry off the Cambodian coast in November 2024; and travellers have reported a snorkelling excursion booked through island accommodation in which a participant died, citing absent safety provision. Check for life jackets before boarding, and do not take a boat tour in rough weather because it was already paid for
Koh Rong questions, answered
Leave a spare day around it. The only way on and off is the ferry from Sihanoukville, and it stops for wind and swell between June and October, so a tight connection to a flight is the mistake people make here. Put a buffer night on the mainland into Stippl after the island, not before it.
Three or four nights. Across the Koh Rong stops planned on Stippl the usual is 3 nights, longer than Siem Reap or Phnom Penh get, because the beaches are spread right around the island and moving between them means a boat or a long hot walk.
Hardly anyone does it: 13.8% of Koh Rong stops planned on Stippl are a single night, the lowest share in Cambodia. Half of that night is eaten by the ferry at each end. The island only starts working once you have stopped counting days, which takes two at least.
Around twelve weeks for the dry season. Travellers planning Koh Rong on Stippl start about 83 days out, the longest lead of the Cambodian islands, because the good beach places have a handful of bungalows each and December through February goes first.
Different islands, roughly ten kilometres apart. Koh Rong is the bigger and busier one, with bars, tracks and scooters; Samloem is smaller, quieter and mostly walking. A local boat runs between them in under an hour, and plenty of people take it rather than choosing at all.
No, and none on Samloem either. Bring all the cash you will need including the ferry home, in small dollar notes, because change is a problem everywhere on the island. Card payment exists in a few of the bigger places and fails whenever the connection drops, which is often.
