Foix, France
A great first stop on the way south from Toulouse, dominated by the dramatic medieval Château de Foix perched above the town. Stroll the old town and grab a cassoulet or charcuterie from a local bistro. It's a perfect gateway into the Ariège Pyrenees.

Ax-les-Thermes, France
A charming thermal spa town nestled high in the Pyrenees, ideal for a relaxing soak at the free open-air Bassin des Ladres hot spring pool. The surrounding mountain scenery is spectacular and it sits close to the Andorran border for a quick duty-free detour. Try the local Ariège lamb dishes at one of the mountain restaurants.

Villefranche-de-Conflent, France
This UNESCO-listed fortified village is the main departure point for the famous Petit Train Jaune (Yellow Train), a scenic narrow-gauge railway through the Pyrenees. The pink marble ramparts designed by Vauban are stunning to walk, and the village itself is wonderfully preserved. Board the Yellow Train toward Font-Romeu for breathtaking gorges, viaducts, and high-altitude meadows.
