Koh Samui, Thailand
4 main areas of the island:
Chaweng (Party Area):
-Clubs
-Nightlife
-Chaweng beach, very nice, white sands, but busy
Lamai (Bit quieter, but still fairly lively):
-Quieter, but still nightlife, restaurants etc
-Lamai beach still nice (maybe not as nice as Chaweng, but quieter)
Fishermans Village (Less lively, more nice resorts etc)
Bophut (Lots of nice restaurants and bars etc)
Lamai seems like quite a decent option to stay in.

Ko Tao, Thailand
Areas of Ko Tao:
Sairee:
On the west coast, the busiest "most vibrant" area. Most restaurants, bars, shops etc.
Very good central location to get to lots of places on the island.
Nightlife area.
Mae Head:
Second busiest area on Ko Tao.
Walking distance to to Sairee (30/40 mins)
Best place to stay if you are focussed on diving though.
Chalok Bay:
Small and quiet beach area on the south coast.
Still plenty of restaurants and shops - more family friendly though.
Near Taa Toh Beach and Freedom Beach (great for snorkelling)
Sounds like its best to stay on West Coast (east coast much more quiet)

Koh Phangan (Thong Sala Pier), Thailand
Thong Sala is where the pier is that ferry drops you at - its also the main town area on the island.
Haad Rin is where the full moon party is + cheapest accommodation. Also where majority of bars are.
"The further south, the busier it will get. The northern side, and also the northwest are just perfect."
