The facades look like they were designed by an alien — nothing in the world looks like this street. Walk five minutes from the Gothic Quarter into El Born neighbourhood around 6:30pm — this is Barcelona's coolest and most atmospheric area, full of art galleries, independent shops and stunning medieval architecture. The Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar is a 14th-century Gothic church that locals consider more beautiful than the cathedral and it costs almost nothing to enter. The vibe here at golden hour with the warm stone glowing is something you will remember for years.

Walk 10 minutes east from El Born to Barceloneta Beach and arrive around 7:30pm — watching the Mediterranean sunset from here with the city skyline behind you is the perfect way to end a perfect day. Walk along the boardwalk (Passeig Marítim) and take in the sea air — it costs nothing and feels like a reward for every step you took today. For dinner around 8:30pm, head just back into Barceloneta streets where you will find cheap halal Turkish and Arabic restaurants that serve generous portions for under €10 per person.
