The word Sukhothai translates as “dawn of happiness” and the Sukhothai period has unique features and styles. Sukhothai was the capital of Siam for 120 years and saw many kings. Sukhothai was the 13th century capital of Thailand and is the first ancient capital of Siam after unification and before the Ayutthaya era. Sukhothai was founded by King Ramkhamhaeng who is credited with introducing the written Thai language. The region’s restored and preserved monuments, temples and palaces are collected into UNESCO listed Sukhothai Historical Park.
