Aswan, Egypt
Located on Lake Nasser, Abu Simbel is a sanctuary dedicated to Ramses II and his
wife. It is an important tourist destination with thousands visiting each year.
The structure was moved from its original location in order to avoid being
submerged by lake waters after construction of the Aswan Dam. The move took over
a decade and cost around $70 million USD in 1960s money, equivalent to about
half a billion dollars today.
