When most people think of a vacation to Italy, they picture Rome or Florence,
perhaps Venice or Milan. While these larger cities have a lot to offer, they
tend to be crowded and overrun with tourists. Instead, consider heading south to
Capri instead.

Positano, Italy
Located on Amalfi Coast, Positano is known for its limestone cliffs and
turquoise waters. The best thing to do here is walk along Via de Capo with one
hand touching the cliff wall for support. You can also eat delicious food or
have a glass of wine at one of many restaurants overlooking the water.

Salerno, Italy
Taking a detour from Rome and Naples, Salerno is one of my favorite cities in
southern Italy. It’s not only an excellent base for touring nearby Amalfi Coast
but it’s got a rich history of its own—which was immortalized by Federico
Fellini himself. Although Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini had some ambitious
plans to change Salerno (he wanted to build a replica Rome), he never managed to
carry them out before World War II intervened.

Lecce, Italy
Noted for its historic importance as a Roman city, Lecce is considered by many
to be one of Southern Italy’s most attractive cities. It was once known as the
Florence of South Italy because it was so rich with art and architecture.
