Doi Mae Salong and Opium Museum.

Centrum: "Wiang, Mueang Chiang Rai"

Chiang Mai, Thailand
Dag 1: visit Bua Tong “sticky” Falls, Dantewada, and Ban Den; all in the same general vicinity. Chauffeur nodig
Dag 2. While in Chiang Mai, when you go to Doi Suthep (everyone does) find the Monks Trail and walk for 45 minutes through the foliage to Wat Pha Lat (Wat Palad).
Rise early one morning and go th the Three Kings Monument at 5:30 to offer alms to the monks (you could then head out early to Doi Suthep and beat some of the crowds.) There are half day “sunrise” tours that include both temples and go on to Doi Suthep-Pui Hmong village.
Don’t miss Wat Phan Tao, the beautiful teak wood temple next door to Chedi Luang. Most tourists miss it despite its location to Chedi Luang which everyone visits.
Wat Umong and/or Queen SiriKit Botanical Gardens (Canopy Walk is special) makes for a nice trip outside the city, or the unique Wat Suan Dok, the white chedis that hold the ashes of members of the Lanna Royal Family. There’s an important Buddhist university on the grounds as well. Sri Suphan is swathed in silver; unique, beautiful.
Other day trips to consider: to Mon Jam village with stops at Mae Sa waterfall and Pangyong jungle coaster; Mae Kampong village; Chiang Mai Water Park; Lampang; Lamphun; Pha Chor and Doi Inthanon.

Here are a few of the day trips I usually recommend to friends; you can google them and see if they are of interest to you:
*temples in the same general direction on the outskirts of Chiang Mai; Wats Umong (Tunnel Temple) Sri Suphan (silver), Suan Dok (chedis hold the ashes of Royal Lanna Family members), Doi Kham (HUGE Buddhas).
*morning half day at Elephant Nature Park, then Bua Tong “sticky” Falls and Dantewada in the afternoon; Wat Ban Den if there’s time before returning to Chiang Mai
*Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and the Monk’s Trail hike to Wat Pha Lat; Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens and Canopy Walk
*Mae Kampong village
*Mon Jam village with stops at Mae Sa Waterfall and Pongyang Jungle coaster and zip line
*Doi Inthanon NP with waterfall hike into Mae Klang Luang village; Twin Pagodas, Wachirathan Falls, and Summit; stop at Pha Chor Canyon on the way to or from Doi Inthanon
*For those with more time, a night in Lampang via the train through the historic Khun Tan Tunnel, and a visit to Wat Chalermprakiat
*Chiang Dao and Cave
Things I NEVER recommend:
*visit to Longneck villages (my reasons are long and involved).
*day trip to Chiang Rai for White/Blue temples. THREE HOURS each way to see “artsy” temples with no historical significance (Blue opened just 9 years ago). Most tours include the “Golden Triangle” which is a nothing burger tourist trap.
*any so-called elephant “sanctuary” that allows tourists to bathe the elephants, or offers to bring elephants to your bungalow for feeding (often referred to as “wake up calls;” any facility that allows interaction with tigers.
In Chiang Mai, if a first timer, stay within the old city walls or just outside near Tha Phae Gate: Thai Akara, Askara Heritage, Tamarind Village, Pingviman, Phor Luang Meun Terracotta, U Chiang Mai, Buri Gallery House, 137 Pillars House; all have good reputations and amenities. Thai Akara is my go-to.
