<div>Nikko (日光, Nikkō) is a town at the entrance to Nikko National Park, most famous for Toshogu, Japan's most lavishly decorated shrine and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.</div><div><br></div><div>Nikko had been a center of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for many centuries before Toshogu was built in the 1600s, and Nikko National Park continues to offer scenic, mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, wild monkeys and hiking trails.</div><div><br></div><div>Nikko and the Okunikko area around Lake Chuzenji, in particular, are well known for their beautiful autumn colors (koyo). In the average year the colors start descending from the higher elevations of Yumoto Onsen in early October, are best around Lake Chuzenji and the Irohazaka road in mid to late October and reach the town of Nikko in the first half of November.</div><div><br></div><div>Nikko is located along Japan's Romantic Road.</div>

<div>** Head on the 120 along Japan Romantic Road, there are free parking lots along the way.</div><div>continue to Roadside Station Oze-Katashina (looks really nice).</div><div>** Fukiware Falls is Japans version of Niagra Falls, absolutely stunning.</div><div>** walk further down the valley to see Hanna Rock and Madutobi Falls (there is a path to follow.</div><div>** 4km from Fukiware Falls is Oigami Onsen (hot spring resort with accom. This is not a must see, just if we want a shower.</div><div>** There is a castle on the way called Lock Heart Castle, it is a theme park, $13 entry.</div><div>** Not far away is a rest area called Nakayama Banchi Rest Area.</div><div><br></div>

<div>** Head to Shima Onsen, on the road in, check out Shima Potholes, lots of beautiful onsen.</div><div>** If strapped for time, turn left and head to Roadside Station Agatsumako.</div><div>** Not far from here is Kawarayu Oyu Onsen, looks nice.</div>

Karuizawa is a resort town in the mountains near Nagano, Japan. It's known for mild summers conducive to outdoor recreation like golf. Forests in the surrounding area offer cycling and walking paths along with sites like Kumoba Pond and Shiraito Falls. Skiing and hot springs are popular in the winter. Kyu-Karuizawa, the old town center, is the site of a pedestrian shopping strip.

<div>There is much to see in this area, so i think we should stay in the area a night.</div><div>** Reviews state that you are best to park at the Ueda train station or the castle parking to walk to Yanagimachi Street.</div><div>** All of Bessho Onsen attractions can be reached a 10 - 15 minute walk from Bessho station. We can also drive to Bessho Onsen.</div><div>** Lots of onsens at Bessho</div><div>Oyu - large hot springs, indoor and outdoor for each gender. 200y</div><div>Daishiya 200y</div><div>Ishiya 200y</div><div>good idea to shower here.</div>

When leaving Nanto there is an observation deck (might be worth a look)
Head to Gokayama and see Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village (there are a few Ryokan to stay in village, although may be booked out due to Golden week)
Can also stay at Ainokura Camping Ground - not far, 500y approx per night, great reviews, no showers, just toilets.
Not far back on the road is Guesthouse Yamashita-Ya and Cafe - approx $85 night
Further down the road is Kuroba Onsen, closes 9pm. Open air bath overlooking the lake, they have food. great reviews.

Ist stop is Roadside Station Shirakawa Go - great reviews, right before the villages. Can see Gassho Museum, free entrance, very close to the Road Station. There is also a Japanese restaurant called Minja.
Explore the village then on the road to Ogimachi Castle Observation Deck.

TRAVEL THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS ROUTE 360 - check to see if the route is open as closed November to May. There is no accom food or petrol, so need to prepare for this.
On the route see Observation de la Cordillera and Amou Pass, a pass connecting Hida City & Shirakawa Village
