Napoleon (the nephew) employed an architect - built all the buildings in
downtown at the same height
Poorest town in France - failing.
1942 more bunkers here than Normandy - Nazis were most concerned about it
started to move south to keep their foothold.
Went to poorest neighbourhood and said 1 hr to leave, marched then to trains,
concentration camps. blew up 60% of downtown, the old neighbourhood - 2000
people on a week.
rebuilt in the 50s quickly and poorly.
Le panier means "the basket" - 10 yrs ago dangerous and dirty reputation (the
ghetto) from nigeria, italy, corsico. turned it into the main tourist
attraction, gentrify it. started cleaning garbage, put lights, lots of security
cameras, give money to owners to renovate. new problem is that they are air bnbs
(no more bakeries, butchers, etc).

* Day trip to Cassis - visit the beach les Calanques. Weds and Fridays they
have markets / Marche de cassis.
* The old port at night time and the view from the esplanade near the fort
* Le Panier for bakeries and art
* Vallon des auffes (sunset)
* Take a ferry to islands (see castle monte cristol)
* watch Marseilles on netflix
* professional diving spot to see historical cave paintings (can see replica in
modern museum)
* The basilica: BUS #60 towards the basilica, right at the very end of the bus
stop
* End of pier or ches michelle + fon fon + rhehoule (for boulabase, seafood
dish)
* swim Sormiou
* hike: den vau, go by bus, go early - bus to cassis, go to right, walk past
restaurants, walk national park, 1.5hrs hike, arrive at port pin and splits
in two (take blue colour), beautiful view - if go down beach, go down cliff,
take something to eat
* cassis they are supermarkets etc
