Christchurch, New Zealand
Christchurch will be the quiet bookend to our honeymoon. We’ll be staying with Al and Kate, which gives us exactly the start we want, familiar faces, home-cooked meals, and space to settle into the trip without pressure. Rather than sightseeing, this time will be about rest, conversation, and easing into holiday mode. It sets the tone for the whole journey, slow, grounded, and focused on being together.
-
Akaroa, New Zealand
Akaroa will be where the trip truly begins to feel like a honeymoon. We’ll drive over in the morning, grab breakfast by the harbour, and spend time soaking in the coastal atmosphere. Late morning, we’ll head out on a kayak tour around the bay, paddling along the coastline and keeping an eye out for dolphins.
Afterwards, we’ll keep the rest of the day flexible, either staying in Akaroa for an early dinner or heading back toward Little River to cook and enjoy a quieter evening. This stop is all about freedom, fresh air, and letting the day unfold naturally.
-
Little River, New Zealand
Whether we stayed for dinner in Akaroa or return to Little River to cook and unwind, we will enjoy our serene accomodation in little river and have a quiet evening.
-
Geraldine, New Zealand
Geraldine will be a relaxed foodie stop that breaks up the drive inland. We’re looking forward to browsing local stores, tasting regional cheeses, and enjoying the small-town feel. It’s not a long stop, but one that adds texture to the journey and reminds us to enjoy the in-between moments, not just the destinations.
-
Fairlie, New Zealand
Fairlie is all about comfort and indulgence. We’ll stop for its famous pies and, if we love them the first time, may even return for more on a later drive. It’s an easy, light-hearted stop, no expectations, just good food and a chance to reset before continuing on.
-
Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
Tekapo will be one of the most peaceful parts of the trip. We’ll spend time walking by the lake, visiting the Church of the Good Shepherd, and soaking in the Tekapo hot pools while taking in the views. At night, we’ll experience world-class stargazing, standing beneath incredibly clear skies. This is a place where we plan to slow right down and let the landscape do the work.
-
Fairlie, New Zealand
We’re going back for pies. Quick stop. They will be really good
-
Timaru, New Zealand
Timaru will be a gentle pause during a longer travel day. We’ll stop for coffee, stretch our legs by the coast, and enjoy a moment of sea air before continuing on. It’s not about ticking off sights, but about keeping the journey comfortable and unhurried.
-
Oamaru, New Zealand
Oamaru offers a slower pace and plenty of character. We’ll spend time wandering the Victorian Precinct, exploring quirky shops, and enjoying the town’s unique atmosphere. In the evening, we’ll visit the Blue Penguin Colony to watch the little blue penguins return to shore, a calm and memorable wildlife experience that feels distinctly New Zealand.
-
Dunedin, New Zealand
Dunedin will be a short but meaningful stop on the way west. We’ll pause here for brunch and a quick wander, getting a feel for the city and breaking up what would otherwise be a very long drive. It’s a practical stop, but one that adds variety and contrast to the trip.
-
Te Anau, New Zealand
Te Anau will be our place to truly slow down before entering Fiordland. Sitting beside the lake, it feels quiet and grounded, exactly what we want ahead of our cruise. We’ll enjoy easy walks, relaxed meals, and early nights. If we feel like it, we may visit the glowworm caves or bird sanctuary, but mostly this time is about rest and anticipation.
-
Doubtful Sound / Patea, New Zealand
Doubtful Sound will be the emotional centre of our honeymoon. We’ll travel from Te Anau via Lake Manapouri and the Wilmot Pass before boarding our overnight cruise deep into the fjord.
The experience will be immersive, kayaking beneath towering cliffs, watching waterfalls spill into the water, spotting wildlife, sharing dinner onboard, and sleeping surrounded by near-complete silence. This is the part of the trip we’re most looking forward to, remote, peaceful, and deeply connecting.
-
Queenstown, New Zealand
Queenstown will be where we shift into comfort and indulgence. After Fiordland, we’ll slow the pace again with spa treatments, private Onsen hot pools, great food, and Central Otago wine. Having flexible time here means we can follow our energy, whether that’s a scenic outing, a wine-tasting day, or simply sleeping in and enjoying the view.
-
Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand
The glacier region will immerse us in dramatic landscapes, rainforest, rivers, ice, and mountains all in one place. We’ll take easy walks through glacier valleys, relax in private rainforest hot tubs, visit Lake Matheson, and explore glowworm-lit forest paths. This part of the trip balances adventure with restoration, allowing us to experience nature without rushing.
-
Arthur's Pass, New Zealand
Arthur’s Pass will be a scenic transition rather than a destination in itself. As we drive through the mountains, we’ll stop at waterfalls and lookout points, and keep an eye out for kea. It’s a final chance to experience the alpine landscapes of the South Island before returning to Christchurch and bringing the journey full circle.
