explore lagos is often recommended to stay but can be elsewhere if too crowded

Evora, Portugal
can skip, or do as a lunch stop - depends on if/how much we want to break up the
drive north known as the museum-city, its a unesco heritage site with lots of
roman and medieval architecture

Serra da Estrela, Portugal
about 4 hours from evora, or 5hrs 40 min from the Algarve national park and
Portugal's highest mountain range. can drive to the top, trails to walk

Porto, Portugal
3 hrs from serra da estrela we DO NOT necessarily need to stay in Porto. In
Porto area places to see are Porto, the Douro Valley, Braga Douro Valley
beautiful drive through valley, can also do a river cruise wine. lots of wine.
Porto river cruise port houses book store if we do want to base in Porto, the
river front area (ribeira) is best. alternatively, the coastal area just outside
Porto was stunning Braga not sure exactly but it looked like it would be a nice
city to explore there is also the possibility to go up to the parque nacional da
peneda gerês from here but i dont know how much there would be to do there, it
might be more remote trails. would have to investigate further

Nazaré, Portugal
3 hrs from Porto this is the town famous for big wave surfing but unfortunately
we will miss the season (october-feb). can stop for a night or just pass through
other possible stops between Lisbon and Porto: Coimbra - university town,
apparently very pretty Obidos - medieval town
