Siem Reap, Cambodia
Base yourself here to explore the legendary Angkor complex — don't miss Ta Prohm, where massive strangler fig and silk-cotton trees have dramatically engulfed the temple walls. Beng Mealea, a largely unrestored jungle temple about 70km away, is even more overgrown and far fewer tourists visit. Grab a meal along Pub Street or explore the Old Market neighbourhood after your temple days.

Koh Ker, Cambodia
This remote ancient capital, about 120km northeast of Siem Reap, contains over 180 jungle-swallowed temples and towers largely reclaimed by dense forest. The towering seven-tiered pyramid of Prasat Thom is the centrepiece and still has tree roots creeping across its stones. It's best visited as a long day trip by tuk-tuk or rented motorbike from Siem Reap.

Bokor Hill Station, Cambodia
Set high in the Elephant Mountains near Kampot, the abandoned French colonial hill station of Bokor is one of Southeast Asia's most atmospheric ghost towns — mist rolls through crumbling casino halls and jungle vines consume old villas. The old Bokor Palace Hotel and the abandoned church are eerie highlights that feel frozen in time. Stay in charming Kampot town at the base of the mountain and hire a motorbike to explore the hilltop ruins independently.
