Laguna de quilotoa and vulkan richtung Cotopaxi
What is the Quilotoa Loop?
• It’s not a real “loop” by road or trail, but a network of villages and trails between Latacunga and Quilotoa.
• You can trek village to village (2–5 days), or visit key spots by bus.
• Elevation: 2,800–3,900 meters → take it slow and acclimatize.
⸻
🌋 Highlights
Quilotoa Lagoon
• A volcanic crater lake with surreal turquoise color
• You can hike around the rim (4–6 hours, moderate-challenging)
• Or hike down to the water (~30 min) and back up (~1–1.5 h)
Trekking Villages (if doing the full loop on foot):
Sigchos → Isinliví, ~4–5 h
Beautiful rural start; mostly downhill
Isinliví → Chugchilán, ~4–6 h
One of the most scenic days, river valleys, farm paths
Chugchilán → Quilotoa, ~5–6 h
Toughest day, steep uphill to the rim
🧭 Route Options
✅ Option 1: Trekking (3–4 days)
• Most popular:
🚐 Bus Latacunga → Sigchos
🥾 Hike to Isinliví → Chugchilán → Quilotoa
🚐 Bus Quilotoa → Latacunga
✅ Option 2: Day hikes & buses
• Base in Latacunga
• Do day trips:
• Bus to Quilotoa (2.5–3 h), hike the rim or down to the lake
• Visit Saquisilí market (Thursdays)
• Take short hikes near Isinliví or Chugchilán by taxi
⸻
🚌 Transport
• Latacunga is the transport hub.
• Buses run Latacunga ↔ Sigchos / Quilotoa, but are not super frequent.
• Hitchhiking or asking your hostel to call a pickup truck or taxi is common.
⸻
🎒 What to Bring
• Layers! Weather changes fast (sun, wind, fog, rain)
• Rain jacket, hat, gloves
• Water, snacks (shops are rare)
• Offline maps (Maps.me or AllTrails help a lot)
• Cash (no ATMs in the villages)
⸻
💡 Tips
• Start the trek in Sigchos and hike toward Quilotoa → altitude gain is more gradual
• Stay 1 night in Latacunga before and after the loop
• Leave your big backpack at your Latacunga hostel (most offer luggage storage)
• No guide needed if you’re used to hiking, but trails aren’t always marked → follow maps & locals’ advice

I LOVED staying at Secret Garden Cotopaxi near Cotopaxi National Park... lots to do, lovely hostel, one of the most beautiful places in the world! They have a hostel in Quito where you can catch a ride to and from. They have banana peel eating llamas you can feed and friendly dogs lounging around... (hopefully they still have them:)
