Leave early so you can explore before the crowds get thick and still get a good spot.
📍 Start at Tha Phae Gate
• This is where the lantern decorations, parades, and street markets are most active.
• You’ll see locals hanging paper lanterns, lighting candles, and making offerings.
• Great for photos while it’s still light.
• Wander down Tha Phae Road toward the Ping River — it’s beautifully lit up.
📍 Walk to Nawarat Bridge (10–15 mins)
• This is the best free viewing area for sky lanterns.
• From around 7:00 pm–9:00 pm, you’ll start seeing dozens (sometimes hundreds) of lanterns floating up over the river.
• You’ll also see krathongs (floating flower offerings) being released into the water — the atmosphere here is incredible.
• Locals and tourists alike gather on both sides of the bridge — grab a drink or snack from a street vendor and enjoy.
🕯️ Optional: Visit Wat Buppharam (just near the bridge)
• Often decorated with glowing lanterns and open to visitors during Yi Peng.
• Quieter and more spiritual than the bridge crowds.
🧭 Alternative if Nawarat is too busy
Try Iron Bridge or Wat Chaimongkol (slightly south of Nawarat Bridge).
Both are near the river, have great views of lanterns, and are calmer.
🎆 Quick tips
• Don’t buy random lanterns from street sellers inside the city — launches are banned within city limits for safety (only allowed in designated areas).
• Bring a small torch or phone light, comfy shoes, and maybe a light rain jacket (there can be short showers).
• Download Grab or arrange transport in advance — taxis get overwhelmed later in the night
Tha Phae Gate → walk Tha Phae Road → Nawarat Bridge by sunset → enjoy river festivities + street food.
You’ll still feel the heart of Yi Peng — lanterns, candles, floating lights, live music — all without paying a ticket.

• Railay is small — no cars, everything walkable.

• For sunset, West side = best view, East side = chillest bars.
• Don’t overpack for Railay — you’ll be carrying luggage from the boat through shallow water to shore.
