Hội An, Vietnam
Detour: Just down the road is Hoi An (p84), a cultural charmer with an atmospheric old town to wander. 4 hours.
Hoi An (p84), with its irresistible old town and ancient ruins Formerly known as Faifoo, the UNESCO-inscribed Hoi An old town is a living museum of one of Asia’s most active seaports between the 15th and 19th centuries. Much of Hoi An’s original street plan and architecture have endured, despite inevitable modernisation, with just over 800 preserved ancient buildings. Save exploring these streets for the evening, after the hot sun has set and when the streets become festive with colourful lanterns. During the day, escape to nearby An Bang Beach to bask in the sunshine, laze with the breeze and frolic in the cool sea

Da Nang, Vietnam
short but spectacular train journey to Danang (p83) hugs a wonderful stretch of the coast and Danang itself is dominated by its long and luscious strip of powdery white sand. There’s some gentle surf, too. With an increasingly impressive culinary scene, Danang makes an ideal seaside break. The seaside city of Danang (p83) is a metropolis in miniature, with glittery bridges and lofty high-rises, but also a sweeping beach and jungled peninsulas. Nearby is Hue (p79), a city of palaces, tombs and a citadel, and Hoi An (p84), with its irresistible old town and ancient ruins. Each city is worth at least two days

Hue, Vietnam
Hop the sleeper train to graceful Hue (p79), the old imperial capital that meanders along the Perfume River. The main point of interest is the walled Imperial Citadel, the former home of Vietnam’s emperors, and its fabled monuments, many in ruins, others reconstructed. Warhistory buffs should take a day to explore the nearby Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), which functioned as a border between North and South Vietnam.
Hue (p79), a city of palaces, tombs and a citadel Hue is a city of over half a million people with forested surroundings and ancient charms. At its heart is the majestic Imperial City, from which the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty
ruled their empire for 143 years. Today, the age-old Perfume
River, which runs through the centre of the city, and the remnants of the last dynasty of Vietnam sit unperturbed by Hue’s
fast-paced urbanisation. While the old city and the Imperial
City sit to the north of the river, the ‘newer’ part of Hue lies to
the south, where you’ll find most of the hotels and restaurants.

Ninh Bình, Vietnam
An easy journey from Hanoi, Ninh Binh provides a peaceful escape from the noise and distraction of its urban neighbour. It boasts sprawling rice paddies, winding glassy rivers and mossy pagodas, with dramatic karst peaks forming a
picture-perfect backdrop. That said, Ninh Binh isn’t just beautiful landscapes. The capital of Vietnam in ancient times, ‘Halong Bay on Land’ is also home to a number of cultural attractio

Cát Bà Island, Vietnam
Rugged, craggy and jungle-clad Cat Ba, the largest island in the Gulf of Tonkin, is a popular destination for domestic and independent travellers. The central hub of Cat Ba Town is undergoing some questionable redevelopment and resorts dominate beaches nearby, but the rest of the island is largely untouched. Cat Ba National Park offers a few hikes, while karst climbing and kayaking trips take place in idyllic Lan Ha Bay. Note that in summer, hotels raise their prices, and
transfers from Hanoi can be chaotic and frustrating.

Ben Beo, Vietnam
Overnight Cruise !!!
